Cutting the Cards

My 16 year old son and I hadn’t been out shooting for a while, so Saturday morning we got out to the range early and grabbed a couple of the 50 yard benches.

We decided to have a go at some fun targets, a bell, a quad, a couple of spinners, but the real challenge of the day was going to be cutting cards. We set up a stand with 5 playing cards edge on and took along the camera to capture what we hoped would some successful shots.

My son was shooting a Discovery in .177 and right away, he started knicking cards, but just couldn’t get that clean cut, until….

Perfect cut.

We both managed a couple more each before we tried our hand at lighting matches. Despite hits that took the igniter portion of the match, we just couldn’t get one to fire, but we had a great time trying.

Lots of fun and even better that we had the time together.

Thanks Joe

This was the first time I have taken an air gun related video. The kids gave me a GoPro for my birthday, and I still have some work to do getting used to it. The camera placement could have been better, but it did capture the moment.

Thanks much for responding.

Rod, that's a really neat video and some great shooting by your son. What a fun way to spend a Saturday AM together and splitting that card is something neither of you will soon forget.

I certainly remember fondly the time I spent outdoors with my Dad as a young guy, and I know my kids feel the same about the time I've spent with them. It's one of the truly fine points of life!

We have had a lot of fun over the years shooting together. We would end every session with a competition. We even had a medal that the winner got to keep until the next competition.

In the beginning I would throw a shot here and there to give him a victory to keep him interested. These days it is every man for himself! I can hold him off some times, but he takes his share of wins.

As he gets older our outings have to compete for time with his plans with his friends, school, sports and his job, but I hope he will always find time now and then to go out to the range with the old man.
