Why do some regulators require a bleed hole and others do not? Are there advantages of one type over the other?

One example of an Mrod regulator that doesn't need a bleed hole is the Huma

It gains access to the outside air by sealing the regulated side to the face of the gauge block instead of to the wall of the airtube, then having you remove the block front O-ring. This leaves an open air bleed path around the block and out through the gauge hole.

Pretty tricky. happy.gif

Other models replace the block altogether, and access the gauge hole that way.

All regulators require..

three chambers. The high pressure air tube is one chamber, the space between the regulator and the valve is # 2, and there has to be a space of ambient pressure between the two. Some designs provide this intermediate chamber without drilling the tube, some cannot.
There is not any difference in how they work just differences in how they accomplish the same thing.

If your reg requires a hole, then buy another tube, and drill it accordingly
