Response to Valentines and Churchill Mk3/5
Thanks very much for the responses Steve and Chris.
I am specifically interested in the lend-lease (LL) tanks supplied to SU. I take it from what Chris has to say that most of the MkIII Churchills supplied LL would have had the Mk3 gun. Were any other Churchill types supplied LL?
Your post seems to suggest that most of the LL Valentines would have had the Mk5 6pdr gun (the 6pdr varieties anyway). Is their any data on the specific Valentine types which were supplied LL? I guess the date that the switch from the Mk3 to Mk5 gun was made could help in this regard.
I must admit the more I delve into it the more confusing the issue of counterweights/muzzlebrakes becomes. I am sure I have seen some 6pdr valentines with what looks like a "counterweight" on the barrel. It seems like they look different depending on what they were used for and in which vehicle ie muzzlebrake, counterweight or plain, sheesh!
