Looks like I had the wrong birth & death dates for my great-great-grandfather Edwin L. Heflybower. The dates I had came from the Hoeffelbauer genealogy by Beth (Hefelbower) Seebach which was published back in the 1970s.
The birth year of "1843" was recorded and a death date of "August 13" was also recorded.
From some online records of Rockland Cemetery as well as a Civil War record I noticed the discrepancy in the dates. Both sources recorded 1845 as his birth year.
I decided that the best thing to do was to take a trip over to Rockland Cemetery and see for myself what was written on his tombstone and I saw where the correct dates were listed.
The record has been updated to record the dates as given on his tombstone.
I plan to go back to Rockland and copy down the inscriptions on the tombstones to update the list that was originally made back in the mid 1930s.
I also would like to do the same for Bethel. So far no one has posted a cemetery listing for Bethel but I am sure one was done many years ago.
Michael I have some notes from my two visits to Rockland Cemetery, VA. I included the pictures of my Sowers ancestors in my earlier Sowers Family History book.
Would you like what I have for your web page ? If yes how would you like to receive the information ? Posted here on this page or by the mail ?
You can post the info. on this forum if you wish or put it in email. If it's a picture and you don't have the ability to scan you can just mail me a copy.
I have a picture of George and Martha on the website. They were provided by Cousin Betty Powers who lives in the area.
The following grave markers were compiled by me on 22 Jun 1986 & 16 Nov 1986. I only recorded those stones I thought belonged to the families I am compiling information. I have enclosed a picture of George H. & Martha V. Sowers in my Sowers Family Book.

Duane L. Borden (last I heard in a home) compiled a book dealing with grave yards of Warren Co. VA. The ones I needed the most were Rockland Cemetery and Prospect Hill Cemetery of Front Royal, VA.
I have a copy of his book. I do not know if it would be ethical to use his material. But I would be willing to look up names of people for others to see if buried in one of these cemeteries.
Well, I figure the easiest thing to do and would not involve any questions as to whether or not I would be using Duane's material would be for me to go ahead and copy the inscriptions at Rockland and compare them to the ones in the Rootsweb file I have a link to and make my own updated list. Same goes for Bethel.
Ones I would not include in the on-line record but would copy them just for my own sake are the stones put up by living persons to mark where they will be buried when their time comes. I know of a few cousins who have done this so I'll leave those out of the on-line report.
I have various counties for VA, these are just the ones for Warren Co. VA
1. Bell Graveyard of Old Wakeman Mill.
2. Bowen Family Grave Yard
3. Brownley-Mitchell Grave Yard (already given you)
4. Buck Graveyard at Buckton
5. Cook Family at Willow Brook Farm
6. Derflinger Cemetery
7. Earle Grave (one of Anna, wife of Samuel Earle) just one stone given
8. McKay & Painter Graveyard just notes from Hunter B. McKay, believe
to be one of the possible locations of Robert MacKay Sr. burial
9. Federal Hill--Thomson Sowers' farm, just three Ashby graves
10. Garrison Cemetery on Crooked Run
11. Hecht Cemetery of West Run
12. Hite Graveyard at Long Meadows
13. Hopewell Meeting House
14. Kerfoot Grave Yard
15. Millar Family Grave Yard
16. Mitchell Grave Yard, just one Wm. Mitchell (my ancestor)
17. Nineveh Cemetery
18. Prospect Hill Cemetery of Front Royal, would be a large file, have my
own work & a complete accounting from D. Borden (237 pages worth)
19. Rockland Cemetery (already given you) but I have the remaining markers
found in Duane Borden's book.
20. Rust Grave Yard at Howellsville
21. Sperry-Huffman-Rinker
22. Taylor Grave Yard at Walnut Hill
23. Upland Baptist Church just three listing
24. Wheelwright Grave Yard
Some of the above came from the notes of Hunter B. McKay and some I collected for myself. Some might be just the the names connection with our families, rather than a complete listing.
For Clarke county I just have a few family listing from Old Bethel, most likely you already have those. I do have a few from Old Chapel in Berryville. Most likely the new cemetery book put out by Clarke County Historical Society has those. I very interesting cemetery to visit. I also have from the notes of H.B. McKay short listing of grave markers from Burchell & Lindsey Grave Yards.
From the notes of Hunter B. McKay, he didn't record the year he compiled this information.
"On Providence Farm now owned by the estate of Charles Copenhaver, dec'd, near White Post, part of the enclosing fence is standing the rest fropped to pieces; dreadfully overgrown, open to live-stock in the surrounding field, most of the stones standing solid and straight. No care given it."
This cemetery would be now location in Clarke Co. VA.

She was the daughter of Eli & Sarah (Branson) Lehew. I have compiled a history of her various family names, available for rent through L.D.S. library.
In a previous message you said
"Son of Hubert F. & Bessie L. (McKay) McKay.
She was the sister of my grandmother Daisy Love (McKay) Shipp"
My info shows that Bessie and Daisy were both born in
1889. Were they twins? I also believe that Bessie's
middle name was "Lucille". Unfortunately, I don't
have their parents nor do I have any info on Daisy's
descendants (your line). Could you help me fill in those
blanks, please?
My wife's connection to the McKay's is through Jesse Hitter
McKay's wife, Lucy Mary Almond.
Bessie's middle name is "Lucille" and she married a cousin, Hubert Francis McKay.
Regarding Jesse Hitter McKay's line, I haven't entered that one on line yet. I have further info. from Dee Ann's book on that branch. I believe they are buried in Nineveh.
Thanks, ALOT, Michael. It was a typo on my part. Sorry.
Please keep me in mind when (if) you work on Jesse Hitter
McKay's line. Since I don't have a copy of Dee Ann's book
here in California, I am at a loss as to what is listed
there. I'd be particularly interested in their descendants
as the current generation would be my wife's 4th cousins.
Also, any info on Jesse Hitter's 1st wife (Lucy Mary
Almond) and her ancestry would be appreciated. I believe
that Jesse and Lucy only had one child (Alfred Almond
McKay) before Lucy died at age 26.
Also, has anyone traced these McKay's back to Scotland?
If so, and the ancestors came from Islay, Kintyre,
Antrim, or North Uist, then there may well be a link
to the MacDonald Clan, too. I know the Antrim family
name intermarried with McKay's, but hopefully that's
more than a coincidence. My wife and I are very active in
Clan Donald, USA, and would love to find a connection.
The biggest problem we have with linking our Robert Mackay Sr. back to anyone in Scotland is the lack of documentation to establish a connection.
There have been numerous claims stating that our Robert Mackay Sr. came from either Scotland or Northern Ireland but to date there hasn't been any evidence to verify them.
The earliest known record about our Robert Mackay Sr. is that he owned land in Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He also did not give any reference to a country of birth unlike his land partners who did state a country of origin.
The parents of Lucy Mary Almond were: Mann Almond & Barbara Lionbarger married in Shenandoah Co. VA 24 Oct 1817. These early Shenandoah Co. VA marriages were only recorded in a line in a book.
Said Barbara was the daughter of David & Mary Lionbarger as listed on the marriage entry in John Vogt's marriage book.
Perhaps you can learn more about her ancestry reading through Shenandoah Co. VA wills & land deeds. This county is last on my list of books to abtract and compile.
If you need the counties of Clarke (marriage), Culpeper (marriages), Fauquier Co. VA (birth, deaths, marriages, land deeds & wills), Frederick (births, death, wills & land deeds), Shenandoah (births, deaths & marriages) & Warren (birth, marriages & deaths)
Thanks ALOT for checking on Lucy Mary Almond's parents.
What you say confirms what I've found, too.
I'd like to go back at least one more generation, please.
Mann Almond's parents were Edward Almond (ca 1755-1808) and
Lucy Dismukes (ca 1760-1841) (perhaps Lucy Mary's namesake?).
Mann and Lucy were my wife's 3rdGGrandparents. I'd haven't,
yet, been able to find out any more about the Dismukes, but
am really interested in them. Do you have anymore there?
I appreciate all the work you've done. Thanks for your help.
John Vogt's marriage book for Shenandoah Co. VA doesn't have any listing. I am assuming you have the Almond men's & woman marriage record filed in that county.
Amelia C. Gilreath's book on Shenandoah Co. VA Abstracts of Wills 1772-1850 doesn't have any entries. Her book doesn't have any of the information found on the film except the wills, so there is lots of missing information. Which is why in the future I will have to abtract that group of film.
She has abtracted into book form early land deeds of Shenandoah Co. VA. You might want to check with book sellers & your local library.
Torrence book "Virginia and Administrations 1632-1800" the only spelled near the one you want is:
Wm. DISMANG in Lunenburg 1791 will
Archer DISMONG in Brunswick 1791 inventory
There was a James Dismaker who served in American Revoluntary War.
Above could be the different surnames or the one you are looking.
I did find one source--perfect match and you can make of it what you will.
Dorothy Ford Wulfeck "Marriages of Some Virginia Resdients 1607-1800"

"Dismukes, Betty & James Maylain

Dismukes, Patsy m. Jacob Umbreckhouse"
The entry for Paul Dismukes might give you a hint as to the direction from where your family entered Shenandoah Co. VA. But I would first start in Shenandoah Co. VA records.

If you need the counties of Clarke (marriage), Culpeper (marriages), Fauquier Co. VA (birth, deaths, marriages, land deeds & wills), Frederick (births, death, wills & land deeds), Shenandoah (births, deaths & marriages) & Warren (birth, marriages & deaths)

The house at Hopewell is a splendid blue limestone structure, built in 1733, remodeled about 1800. Located about 6 miles out of Winchester on the Martinsburg Road, near the village of Clearbrook, in the vicinity of which many Branson have lived, and were buried in the graveyard. In addition to Branson, there are marked graves of Lupton, Wood, Hackney and other allied families of the McKay. It is believed that Andrew McKay (son of Robert Jr.) is buried in this location. In November 1986 I recorded the following grave stone.

Charles Buck and his two wives: Ann Sorrell Earle & Letitia Sorrell started the various Buck family groups, some of their graves found at Prospect Hill Cemetery. A lot of their grave markers are found in the same area in the cemetery. And the families they intermarried with also found nearby. This family intermarried with our McKay, Branson & Lehew families. If you desire more information about these check federal census, marriage records, land deeds, wills etc......

Warren Co. VA Land Deed Book D,74, dated 15 Sep 1846, probated 21 Dec 1847,
The late Wm. Fristoe's slaves divided among his widow Lucy and among his 10 children.
1850 Warren Co. VA list Lucy Fristoe 70, Mariam 29, Julia 27, last two her daughters, her son Silas living next to her on said census.
The commissioners: Henry Hockman, James Stinson & J.S. Miller divided the slaves as follows:
1. the widow dowers: Ginney, Harriet & Silvia as her 1/3 portion
2. to six of the children: Silas, Susan, Elizabeth, Sarah, Priscilla & Lucy
allotted John & Mary
stated that said Silas Fristoe had purchased the other five shares
3. to four of the children: Nancy, Mariam, Julia & Jane received Ann & her two of her children: Clary & Elias.
The connection with the Fristoe family to McKay family through Moses Mackay Sr's blood lines, see page 277 of my MacKay Book.
Moses MacKay m. Mary Job/Jobe son
Jeremiah McKay m. Lydia Whitson son
Jeremiah McKay Jr. m-1 Nancy ann Dickerson daughter
Eliza McKay m. Dr. Zachariah James Compton daughter
Eliza McKay Compton m. Middleton M. Johnson daughter
Mary E. Johnson m. Lee Jackson Fristoe
Said Lee Jackson Fristoe was son of James B. & Mary Elzabeth (Hockman) Fristoe and said James B. son of above Silas Fristoe.
People interested in the Fristoe family I am sure can find additional information picking through orginial records.
Seven entries found on the country death registry for Fristoe family members. I abtracted the registry in 1995, now out of print, so researchers will have to view the film.
One interesting item the said Lucy's death listed:
Fristoe, Lucy, died in Mar 1855, in Warren Co. VA, typhoid fever, age of death 70 years, born in Stafford Co. VA, wife of Wm. Fristoe, parents Aron & Ann Botts, death reported by Jane Weaver, daughter; Page 9, line 5"
Slave John's death also listed. If interested in their slaves, might have to research Botts family of Stafford Co. VA.
The said Silas Fristoe's wife was Catherine DuBois Allen they were married in Shenandoah Co. VA 1st Aug 1825. She listed in my family history of Ann Elizabeth Lehew (wife of Thomas Buck McKay) on page 126.
If you "Google" the cemetery Prospect Hill Cemetery of Front Royal, Warren Co. VA a researcher has placed pictures of certain stones on line. She has other links to cemeteries, I believe, mostly in Shenandoah Co. VA
There are thousands of grave markers in Prospect Hill Cemetery of Front Royal, VA. I have posted the ones I have in my notes. I do have the book by D. Borden, if you want me to look to see if your ancestors are buried in this cemetery, e-mail me.
Ok, here's a link to the Rootsweb files on the different grave inscriptions that have been submitted. You can go back into Virginia and then move into Clarke or Frederick or any other County or you can go back further into the United States and pick a different state and go from there.
I guess I need all of the ones you've mentioned here.
With regards to Rockland, they do have Rockland listed but I'm a little confused about something here.
The listing has some McKays mentioned whose graves I didn't see so I was wondering if perhaps the record may have been mixed with Nineveh.
I know Aunt Mary (Heflybower) and Uncle Charles R. McKay are buried at Nineveh. Also Uncle Charles Edward & Aunt Etta (Sowers) McKay were originally buried here but were later removed to Prospect Hill.
It was they who donated the land that the Rockland Cemetery is built on.
You are right three McKay graves they have listed as being at Rockland are really located at Nineveh. I have already submitted to you my listing for Nineveh, Rockland Cemetery & Kerfoot (located in Clarke).
Over the weekend and next week I will send you what I have on remaining cemeteries.
One correction on the internet listing of cemeteries, on the listing of the Taylor Cemetery at "Walnut Hill" Susan Buck is buried in that location, not Susan Beeck, as they have recorded.
I remember seeing Aunt Belinda Rouss Heflybower's gravestone before. It had fallen over and I straightened it up. Since then it had been repaired and put onto a platform shared by one of the Grubbs graves.
I didn't know where Uncle Charles Dorsett McKay was buried until I saw this report. I knew he had died at age two but because his parents were buried at Green Hill (Berryville) I assumed he would also be located there somewhere.
Aunt Belinda was named after Charles Broadway Rouss whom it is said had a relationship with her mother Aurelia Timberlake before she married Ed Heflybower.
The story as it was relayed to me is that Charles Broadway Rouss came calling one evening while a little too intoxicated which did not sit well with Aurelia and she broke off the relationship.
Years later Mr. Rouss was still fond of Aurelia and decided to leave her something in his will, "To Aurelia Timberlake or whatever her name is now".
I'm assuming that because of this generosity Edwin and Aurelia named their youngest child after him.
The amount willed was never given because Mr. Rouss's other heirs contested it.
