Robert McKay Jr. Descendants

July 19 2009 at 6:31 PM

I am trying to find out if Robert McKay Jr. Had a son Named Joseph C. McKay. He was born Jan 17 1782 in Frederick co. Va. Joseph married Margaret Jackson. There is a Question if Joseph's dad was Robert or Alexander McKay. Would anyone know for sure? I'm trying to follow the descendancy to my Gr. Grandfather Lewis McKay b. Nov.18 1888 in Nodaway co. Missouri.

Thank you,

Kathy

Check Michael's Site

July 20 2009, 6:24 AM

I believe Michael has posted on his site the names of Robert Jr.'s children by his first wife: Andrew, Jacob Sr., Margaret, Robert III, Job, John, Enoch, Jesse & Sarah. Birth years range from 1736 to c1753.

I am very interested in the two marriages listed in Shenandoah Co. VA for Alexander McKay, one Alex McKay & Rosanna Conner 3 Feb 1819 and Alex McKay & Leuretia Warren 20 Feb 1833.

I do not believe Alexander McKay & Asa McKay living in Shenandoah Co. VA were descendants of Robert MacKay Sr, but I will have to wait until I start pulling detailed information from Shenandoah Co. VA Land Deeds.

I have posted information about Alexander McKay on this site. Check other listings.

You should start your your quest in MO and work your way back in time.

If you have male McKay, check with Michael about the D.N.A study being done.

Good luck with your research.

The Wrong Robert McKay

July 20 2009, 7:15 AM

"Someone" told you the wrong generation of Robert McKay. I thought the maiden name of Jackson was familar. In any case Joseph McKay's line from:

1. Robert MacKay Sr. his eldest son

2. Robert MacKay Jr. m-1 Patience Job/Jobe their third son

3. Robert McKay III b. 1 Jan 1744 Frederick Co. VA to Mary....?, d. 1800 Kenton Co. KY, their sixth child

4. Joseph McKay b. 17 Jan 1782 Kenton Co. KY, m. Margaret Jackson, d. 1813 Kenton Co. KY. I believe one of Hunter Branson McKay's friends send him a cemetery record on his family group. No "C" as part of his name.

I just have the names and birth years of their 11 children: Jackson S., Serena C., Jlalisa, Sarah Ann, Clarisa J., Joseph W.G., James M., Wallace Johnson, Margaret E. McKay, Ally Ann (married Samuel Finley Guthrie) & Mary Emeline McKay. Personally I have not check the later records to see where they all lived and died.

I suspect the names of their children came from the notes of the late Hunter Branson McKay, send to him by others, most likely deceased. I would check records in Kenton Co. KY.

If you know of a male McKay of this line, try to get him to take the D.N.A test, check with Michael.

You will have to supply the documentation from said Joseph to your Lewis McKay of 1888 of MO. You are missing 106 years. If others point to an Alexander McKay, then you might still being looking at the wrong Joseph McKay (not a Joseph C. McKay). So again I would look at the records in MO and see if they lead you back to Kenton Co. KY.

Now we have a Joseph Casper McKay (Joseph C. McKay) but he was born in Warren Co. VA 1843, son of John Wesley McKay & second wife Mary Elenore Massie, he was the son of John & Rebecca McKay, who was the son of Jacob McKay III.

If you are getting your information about the McKay family from the net, be advised a lot of people play the game "Pick a McKay". Just because people say your McKay family came from "VA" does not mean you are descendants of Robert Mackay Sr.

Just ask Michael about the various McKay D.N.A profiles that have been found through that scientific study.

Good luck with your research.

D.N.A.

July 20 2009, 12:54 PM

I would love to have a D.N.A. test done but seeing as i'm not a male it will cost me more money.
the only male McKay on our line would be My nephew or my cousin and a great uncle.
Don't know if they would take the test or not.

Trip To The Library

July 20 2009, 9:12 AM

L.D.S. film listing two films you will want to order should have the birth record of your Lewis McKay

1006945 and 1006946 has death records for Nodaway Co. MO.

They have lots of other film you can order for that location. At $5.50 a film order. I do not see they have placed said film on their site for "free".

I can't seem to find your Lewis on the 1900,1910 or 1920 census for that location. Unless the name was indexed wrong.

Good luck with your research.

McKay's

July 20 2009, 12:42 PM

I will start with my Gr. Grandfather.
Lewis McKay b.Nov.18 1888 in Beatrice, Nebraska.
His father was James W. McKay b. Nov. 20 1857 in Atchinson co., Missouri.
His father was Wallace Johnson McKay b. Nov 18 1825 in Missouri.
His father was Joseph C. McKay b. in Kenton co., Kentucky.
His father was Robert McKay b. 1 March 1743 in Frederick Co., Virginia.

I have been talking to a Jack Martin who said that Robert wasn't Joseph's father that Alexander was. I was to Believe that my info was correct. That's why the question of who the father was.

My Gr. Grandfather's mother was Mary Wallace according to family member's.
She died in birth with the twin to my Gr. Grandfather. Can't seem to find her death record though, or where she might be buried.

First Four Generations

July 20 2009, 1:33 PM

We have firm documentation for the four generations I posted earlier

1. Robert Mackay Sr. eldest son
2. Robert McKay Jr.
3. Robert McKay III (didn't use III)
4. Joseph McKay, not Joseph C. McKay

So far I have not found in Frederick Co. VA nor Shenandoah Co. VA Alexander McKay connected directly with the family of Robert Sr.

I have placed posting about him on Michael's site.

Good luck with your research.

Jack Martin

Wallace Johnson McKay is my 3rd. Gr. Grandfather and he had a brother named George McKay. That is the line Jack is from. He insists that Wallace's Grandfather was Alexander McKay, and his wife's name was Jane.He has alot of info. about this line. I think my line has Robert McKay as Wallace's Grandfather. My Gr. Granfather Lewis McKay had an Uncle who was a Baptsist Minister.Usually they name thier son's after someone in the family. Off the top of my head he said that Alexander came from Va. and into Missouri and then down into Alabama. My relatives came from Nodaway Co. Missouri and his came from Howard Co., Missouri. I hooked up with him when he had put a photo of Wallace Johnson Mckay and his wife Cyndrilla Burris McKay and some children and another photo of George McKay and his wife Lydia Stonehocker McKay. on Findagrave.com's Sight I haven't any photo's of them and asked how he was related.

I hope this helps,
Kathy

Answer In Kenton Co. KY

July 27 2009, 7:25 AM

The family of Robert McKay III who married Mary.....? lived in Kenton Co. KY, the documentation as to his descendants will be found in Kenton Co. KY.

At one time where was a family bible belonging to this branch of the family in the possession of Miss Edith McKay of Ludlow, KY. She passed her information off to E. Rudolf McKay who in turn gave it to Hunter B. McKay. She would have had the information about Robert III and his sons and grandsons which I posted here. If her information is wrong then I would like to known. But given that other sources are quoted about this branch of the family I am rather sure she had the correct information. She had no further information about the line of Wallace Johnson McKay.

However, you should be able to find information in the above location to vertify the information you will need. Like land deeds, cemetery records (she had a survey dealing with the family cemetery in above location), court records, marriage bonds, wills etc......L.D.S. library as lots of films to be viewed. Each film rental will cost you $5.50 a roll. I do not know if Kenton Co. KY has a web site on line offering "free" material.

If the other reseacher clearly states your line comes from an Alexander McKay. What is his evidence?. Should not be a difficult for him to supply the answer. He should have land deeds, cemetery records, court records, marriage bonds, wills ect..... There should be legal documents filed in Kenton Co. KY, that would show Alexander McKay being the father of your line. If true--then I see no way as of now, your line & Jack Martin's are related to the family of Robert MacKay Sr.

I have placed posting on this site items Alexander McKay of early Shenandoah Co. VA from legal documents. I do not see how he could have been a direct descendant of Robert Sr. Since I have been unable to find other male relations of Robert Sr. if related to Robert would have been a very distant cousin. D.N.A. would rule him out or in. There was an Alexander McKay who had land in early Cecil Co. MD, but I have not found a record of him removing down into Frederick/Shenandoh Co. VA.

Before I spend more time looking through my "files" dealing with this branch of the family--my very distant cousins. I would like to know what legal documents Jack Martin has showing the names of the children of Alexander McKay of VA ? Location in VA that he lived is very important point-- would HAVE to be in Frederick or Shenandoah counties of VA.

I do hope to find out more about Alexander McKay & Asa McKay of Shenandoah Co. VA then I start to comb through Shenandoah Co. VA Land Deeds, will not be until January of 2010.

Two Different Families

July 27 2009, 10:17 AM

The McKay family started by Alexander McKay/McCoy of Shenandoah Co. VA according to legal document filed in Chancery Suit, his age given as 64 years as of 1792. That would mean a couple of years younger than Robert MacKay Sr.'s youngest son Moses.

None of Robert Sr.'s other sons had a son named Alexander. This first name not used by the family of said Robert Sr.--as far as I can find in legal records.

I have not been able to find legal documents linking the above Alexander McKay to the Alexander McKay who married on 3 Feb 1819 to Rosanna Conner and I have the land deed that they filed. Also Alexander McKay who married Leuretia Wilson in Shenandoah Co. VA on 20 Feb 1833. If these men were related, I do not known, and I am trying to find where they removed. They are not living in Warren or Clarke Co. VA after 1837.

I would not assume because they are using the same first name they are related, but I have not found a record showing they are related to the group of MacKay/McKay started by Robert Mackay Sr.

Since I do not know you or the another researcher. And no legal records have been given for Alexander McKay being the father of the later generation. I really do not know if the information being supplied comes from one of the various computer banks or is merely just someone opinion. The facts do not support an Alexander McKay being connected to our group of Mackay. I can only assume someone (and not me) is just making up information linking a later generation to earlier generation.

The four generation I have supplied to you is the results of layers of layers of legal documentation and generations of McKay researcher doing research in libraries and our earlier research now has DNA study which can link the early generations of Mackay/Mckay together. Going back to my first message--you need to do working in Kenton Co. KY to prove your line back to the four generation of MacKay of VA.

About 55 years earlier

July 28 2009, 6:42 AM

Robert Mackay/McKay Jr.'s son Robert with wife Mary left Frederick Co.VA acout c1775 and settled in Kenton Co. KY where his children were born. He started off his life as a Quaker and was later disowned by the Society for training in the militia. Check Hopewell Friends and Hinshaw.

Said Robert is mentioned in connection with deed of sale of Isaac Zane's executors in Shenandoah Co. VA court records under date of August 1812. Chancery records are on line through State of VA web site.

You will find their records in Kenton Co. KY among land deeds, court records, land deeds, birth and death registry ect.... We know where their family grave yard existed in the 1970's. I have not personally visited the site.

The Alexander McKay of Shenandoah Co. VA was still in VA c1830. I still hope to find out more about him as I go through land deed for that location. I see absolutely no way he is related to the McKay started by Robert of Kenton Co. KY. Jack Martin is trying to mix two different families together as one and both groups arrived into KY two entirely different time periods.

Did Jack Martin's ancestors never live in Kenton Co. KY? The two counties in MO that the two groups of McKay lived are not even close together ?

Another Researcher

By the name of Carolyn Henry of TX as submitted to the L.D.S. computer bank your Wallace Johnson McKay. You can get her address

www.familysearch.org

She has his father's name as Joseph C. McKay, I disagree only Joseph McKay. You can ask her for her sources. And she links the line back to Robert Jr. of VA.
