Michael Phelps (&other topics)

by ILM

So this Phelps guy is crazy with the medals, nice to see America known for something other than wars and and a bad economy. I'd bet he gets his pick of any forclosed home he would like out in Califonia, I hear they're leaving that place in droves. Maybe the former Cali's would have better luck in China.

Maybe we should put young Michael in the countries driver seat for awhile, he could scarcely do worse than 'ol GW Jr. Good grief how did that guy make it for two terms?, you know, other than the fact that he gets his money from big oil, and has family support that could have bought him pretty much anything, including his presidency...other than that, how'd he get in?

So what do we think about Mccain & Obama. Mccain will keep us in an unwinable war, but really, what's the alternative there? Or Obama brings the troops home, either we stay, and occupy, which means long term and more lives lost, or we leave, Under Iran's watch everything looks good for oh about 10 seconds, we see some level of Iran annexation of Iraq, the Palestinian cause flares with renewed force, Israel responds in kind, the entire region starts to destablize, Russia and the US begin to butt heads over a resolution to the issue, violence erupts on that front and bada bing, WWIII. So it seems to me staying over there is the safest bet, being a bad choice but probably the least bad. Anybody check out the "Doomsday Clock" website lately, kind of a scary thing. We are going to need some pretty fancy footwork from the next President to keep the lid on all that's going on in the world concerning the US, Russia and the Nukes sitting around waiting to be used.

Why can't we all just, get along! heh heh

I find it hard to take the Doomsday clock too seriously.

by Essay

I don't think it's ever been further away from mass destruction than four minutes my entire life. You get inured to that after a while.

I didn't watch the Olympics. I don't much like sports anyhow, but I consider the Olympics somewhat hypocritical on top of being boring. Supposedly they're supposed to foster peace and understanding, but everybody goes there representing a country and competing for that country. At the end there's a medal count, and winners and losers. How, I ask you, is that fostering brotherhood and good vibes?

Now if they hosted a competition where the best athletes of the world came and competed in their own name, with no country-of-origin uniforms I might actually tune in to see the fencing.

Any phrase with "Doomsday" in it warrents some degree of attention in my book

by ILM

I'll grant the clock seems rather arbitrary, but the information on the site, covering the last few decades makes for some compelling reading.

Good point on the olympics. I do enjoy watching them, just to see the amazing things people are capable of. There are lots of detracters though: there;s the performance enhancer issue, which is always there, whether reported on or not, then there is the issue you brought up, as well as what constitutes an unhealthy life view, provided it's carried to extremes. By unhealthy life view, I mean the total focus on the physical body and it's abilities with the sole purpose of being the best in the world. The best in the world can only naturally be one, with many other losers who have also spent most of their lives preparring for their respective events only to be beaten in the end. Bodily function decreases and abilities fade as we age, so is it a healthy message to send that some of our youth should put all there efforts into modling there bodies to such a rigorous standard when our culture has so many issues with aging as it is. Would it not be prudent to emphasize the beauty that can go with aging, like gained experience and deeper insight into the world and it's issues. I'm not against the healthy body and some competition, but a well rounded body and mind is also a worthy goal.

I'm not sure about the unhealthy life view part, but "yup" on the rest.

by Essay

Achievers usually achieve at the expense of other areas of their life. Their choice. Great writers don't get out much, great thinkers don't get the concept of coordinated wardrobes, and great athletes don't spend a lot of time watching "Monk" on television. It's up to them what's important in life. Couldn't do it myself, but that's just me.

We lose a lot more than bodily functions with the aging process. Mental facilities deteriorate as well. We lose some things, we gain some things. Rather than spend youth preparing for old age, I don't have a problem with celebrating youth while you have it. If that means pushing your body to the limits (not something I'm personally into myself) then go for it. It's important not to forget the trade-offs, but that can be a hard thing to forget. It isn't attempting to achieve excellence at any age that's the problem, it's society's emphasis on youthful excellence only. Rather than suggest that maybe we'd be better off without celebrating and rewarding athletic excellence, it would be better if we found ways to celebrate and reward the aging process in addition. I suspect that's a challenge our culture isn't going to rise to any time soon, though.

Yeah, all is well, I've got 5 children now, I went back to the North, from NC, I live in CT now, I work at the Hospital in Near Yale, it's a decent job, not the best no the worst, pays the bills, you know. Wife and kids are good, we've been visiting the beach, we're going to the Bronx Zoo sometime in October with the kids and some family, so that will be fun. I'm not old but I'm starting to feel some age on me. I still rock climb, though not as much as I used too. I may take up sking since I'm back up north, we'll see. How are you and Sooth doing?

An early merry Christmas this time, ILM!

by GTX

Ugly Troll and I are doing great, all in all. You know we got married about two and a half years ago, right? My dad was very ill with stomach cancer for four years, but he made it to the wedding before passing away eight weeks later. We bought a house almost two years ago, and our dog loves the stairs and has made all the furniture we bought his very own. Almost everyone in my office got laid off in April of 2006, but I found a new job and started the very next business day. It's only a mile from home and pays a little better so that's nice. It's a crazy European company, though, so there's all the meetings and poor work ethic and committees and group-think to put up with. Just let me get on with my work! Sometimes I think my brain is atrophying.

Well, anyway, I hope this year has treated you well.

Conn.

by ILM

Hey Essay!

Actually, connecticut is my home now, we moved. I'm working up here and so is the wife, we're doing pretty well. We decided to go with an apartment we found for a year and when the lease is up we'll look for a house. We have spoken a good deal about having more kids so we're going to need a decent sized house, hopefully something in a rural area. We've looked a bit in a town called Durham (CT) and so far we like the area. We're in a city now and want to get out into more open spaces, less people, that sort of thing.

Anyway, lots of stuff going on...at home that is. I'm at work right now and bored out of my mind. I think I'm going to fall asleep.

ugh. I'd better check my eyelids for holes for a few minutes. You can never be too carful about those eyelids!

Later,
