It was pointed out to me by Kevin around the year 2000, that the historiography-- or the documented history-- that could be legitimized-- between the years approximately 350 and 1350-- was very very thin. He pointed to a Russian researcher in historiography who decided that that one thousand years was entirely "made up"-- "fabricated"-- and did not, in fact exist. As astonishing and ludicrous a theory as this might sound to be, I decided to engage Kevin on it in a discussion forum and what follows is the result of our online conversation.
