Obviously the collection team want a two week Christmas at home. But I am not aware of any alternative arrangements, and I think there should be. There is NO refuse collection the Friday or Saturday after Christmas; the next refuse collection will be Saturday 2 Jan. So there will be a 15 day gap in service.
I've spent a lot of time in the tropics: there (if there are good Public Health proceedures) you have weekly or more frequent collections to break the life cycle of flies:- they mature from egg to adult in a few days. Here in a UK winter that is probably not a problem, but smell, vermin, animals scattering bags etc etc are likely to happen.
OK you might say - we take our own bottles off to recycle, why can't we take our own rubbish to the dump? Well, how far do we have to go - there are bottle banks at Stadhampton, Dorchester and most large supermarkets, but I suppose we have to go to Oxford Redbridge site with our bags of rubbish. Do you really want to drive that far with bags of rubbish in your car? After all we pay taxes to have SODC do that for us.
What do you think? IS there a Public Health risk? Should we have to put up with piles of rubbish collecting in and around our houses? |
