Subject: ADM Moorer's Death/Navy Coverups like the USS Iowa
FIRST
I liked ADMs Boorda, Buckeley and Kidd, but the only Admiral I ever
admired and trusted completely, Moorer, is now dead. R.I.P. He
fought to the bitter end at age 91, and went down swinging with his
last essay last month (read below). I suspect his last request was to
be burried face-down - so that everybody who attacked him so
mercilessly in life could now kiss his ass. ADM Moorer needed no one
to tell him who he was. Now, with his passing, the US has no
Admirals, and but a pitiful navy left, and probably never will have
again. Make us, God, worthy of this gift, that we may be worthy of
more. V/R, Stan

Bob, Perhaps I should have worded that "everything I saw points to
CNN only played the heat-
> seaking missile hitting a 747." Your spell-checker missed my
misspelled "heat-
> seaking missile." No problem; Jay will catch it. Before Jay's
vicious preemptive, self-defense attack with his dictionary and
spellchecker WMD (words of mass definition) on you, let me get a lick
in first. The accepted definition of an urban legend is fiction
passed off as fact. For example, anything written in the New York
Times or seen on FOX. CBS excluded, of course. I don't want Mickey
Mouse or MTV News on my ass. And I don't want any of my media friends
to commit suicide by self-inflicted starvation (lose their jobs).
TWA 800 does not fall into the URBAN LEGEND category any more than
the USS Liberty attack. The very recently late ADM Tom "Everything
Points to a Missile" Moorer did not relay any information he knew to
be fiction. Nor can either tragedy be universally accepted as URBAN
FACT/TRUTH. Both have their own special category called NAVY COVERUP.
You can't pass off any known fed coverup as an urban legend, no
matter how absurd - not even the CWT spark thingy. OK, maybe I went
too far on that one, that is an urban legend, but you get my general
drift.

The following is not considered urban legend yet because two of the
four signees are still alive. Once Staring and Akins die, then it
officially becomes another navy urban legend:
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
Israel Deliberately Attacked US Ship
>>> In the following article, a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff accuses Israel of intentionally attacking the USS Liberty.
This conclusion was reached by an independent commission comprised of
the following:
Admiral Thomas Moorer: former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
(under President Nixon)
Four-Star General Ray Davis: former Assistant Commandant of the
Marine Corps, and the most-decorated living Marine until his recent
death (his honors include the Purple Heart, two Silver Stars, a
Bronze Star, two Legion of Merit awards, and the Congressional Medal
of Honor)
Rear Admiral Merlin Staring: former Judge Advocate General of the Navy
Admiral James Akins: former United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Betrayal behind Israeli attack on U.S. ship
By ADM. THOMAS MOORER
After State Department officials and historians assembled in
Washington, D.C., last week to discuss the 1967 war in the Middle
East, I am compelled to speak out about one of U.S. history's most
shocking cover-ups.
On June 8, 1967, Israel attacked our proud naval ship -- the USS
Liberty -- killing 34 American servicemen and wounding 172. Those men
were then betrayed and left to die by our own government.
U.S. military rescue aircraft were recalled, not once, but twice,
through direct intervention by the Johnson administration. Secretary
of Defense Robert McNamara's cancellation of the Navy's attempt to
rescue the Liberty, which I personally confirmed from the commanders
of the aircraft carriers America and Saratoga, was the most
disgraceful act I witnessed in my entire military career.
To add insult to injury, Congress, to this day, has failed to hold
formal hearings on Israel's attack on this American ship. No official
investigation of Israel's attack has ever permitted the testimony of
the surviving crew members.
A 1967 investigation by the Navy, upon which all other reports are
based, has now been fully discredited as a cover-up by its senior
attorney. Capt. Ward Boston, in a sworn affidavit, recently revealed
that the court was ordered by the White House to cover up the
incident and find that Israel's attack was "a case of mistaken
identity."
Some distinguished colleagues and I formed an independent commission
to investigate the attack on the USS Liberty. After an exhaustive
review of previous reports, naval and other military records,
including eyewitness testimony from survivors, we recently presented
our findings on Capitol Hill. They include:
· Israeli reconnaissance aircraft closely studied the Liberty during
an eight-hour period prior to the attack, one flying within 200 feet
of the ship. Weather reports confirm the day was clear with unlimited
visibility. The Liberty was a clearly marked American ship in
international waters, flying an American flag and carrying large U.S.
Navy hull letters and numbers on its bow.
Despite claims by Israeli intelligence that they confused the Liberty
with a small Egyptian transport, the Liberty was conspicuously
different from any vessel in the Egyptian navy. It was the most
sophisticated intelligence ship in the world in 1967. With its
massive radio antennae, including a large satellite dish, it looked
like a large lobster and was one of the most easily identifiable
ships afloat.
· Israel attempted to prevent the Liberty's radio operators from
sending a call for help by jamming American emergency radio channels.
· Israeli torpedo boats machine-gunned lifeboats at close range that
had been lowered to rescue the most seriously wounded.
As a result, our commission concluded that:
· There is compelling evidence that Israel's attack was a deliberate
attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire crew.
· In attacking the USS Liberty, Israel committed acts of murder
against U.S. servicemen and an act of war against the United States
· The White House knowingly covered up the facts of this attack from
the American people.
· The truth continues to be concealed to the present day in what can
only be termed a national disgrace.
What was Israel's motive in launching this attack? Congress must
address this question with full cooperation from the National
Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and the military
intelligence services.
The men of the USS Liberty represented the United States. They were
attacked for two hours, causing 70 percent of American casualties,
and the eventual loss of our best intelligence ship.
These sailors and Marines were entitled to our best defense. We gave
them no defense.
Did our government put Israel's interests ahead of our own? If so,
why? Does our government continue to subordinate American interests
to Israeli interests? These are important questions that should be
investigated by an independent, fully empowered commission of the
American government.
The American people deserve to know the truth about this attack. We
must finally shed some light on one of the blackest pages in American
naval history. It is a duty we owe not only to the brave men of the
USS Liberty, but to every man and woman who is asked to wear the
uniform of the United States.
Moorer was chairman of the joint chiefs of staff from 1970 to 1974.
He is joined in the independent commission of inquiry by Gen. Ray
Davis (recently deceased); Rear Adm. Merlin Staring, former Judge
Advocate General of the Navy; and Ambassador James Akins.

We, the undersigned, having undertaken an independent investigation
of Israel's attack on the USS Liberty, including eyewitness testimony
from surviving crewmembers, a review of naval and other officials
records, an examination of official statements by the Israeli and
American governments, a study of the conclusions of all previous
official inquiries, and a consideration of important new evidence and
recent statements from individuals having direct knowledge of the
attack or the cover up, hereby find the following:
That on June 8, 1967, after eight hours of aerial surveillance,
Israel launched a two-hour air and naval attack against the USS
Liberty, the world's most sophisticated intelligence ship, inflicting
34 dead and 172 wounded American servicemen (a casualty rate of
seventy percent, in a crew of 294);
That the Israeli air attack lasted approximately 25 minutes, during
which time unmarked Israeli aircraft dropped napalm canisters on the
Liberty's bridge, and fired 30mm cannons and rockets into our ship,
causing 821 holes, more than 100 of which were rocket-size; survivors
estimate 30 or more sorties were flown over the ship by a minimum of
12 attacking Israeli planes which were jamming all five American
emergency radio channels;
That the torpedo boat attack involved not only the firing of
torpedoes, but the machine-gunning of the Liberty's firefighters and
stretcher-bearers as they struggled to save their ship and crew; the
Israeli torpedo boats later returned to machine-gun at close range
three of the Liberty's life rafts that had been lowered into the
water by survivors to rescue the most seriously wounded;
That there is compelling evidence that Israel's attach was a
deliberate attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire
crew; evidence of such intent is supported by statements from
Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Undersecretary of State George Ball,
former CIA director Richard Helms, former NSA directors Lieutenant
General William Odom, USA (Ret.), Admiral Bobby Ray Inman, USN
(Ret.), and Marshal Carter; former NSA deputy directors Oliver Kirby
and Major General John Morrison, USAF (Ret.); and former Ambassador
Dwight Porter, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon in 1967;
That in attacking the USS Liberty, Israel committed acts of murder
against American servicemen and an act of war against the United
States;
That fearing conflict with Israel, the White House deliberately
prevented the U.S. Navy from coming to the defense of the Liberty by
recalling Sixth Fleet military rescue support while the ship was
under attack; evidence of the recall of rescue aircraft is supported
by statements o Captain Joe Tully, Commanding Officer of the aircraft
carrier USS Saratoga, and Rear Admiral Lawrence Geis, the Sixth Fleet
carrier division commander, at the time of the attack; never before
in American naval history has a rescue mission been cancelled when an
American ship was under attack;
That although the Liberty was saved from almost certain destruction
through the heroic efforts of the ship's Captain, William L.
McGonagle (MOH), and his brave crew, surviving crewmembers were later
threatened with "court-martial, imprisonment or worse" if they
exposed the truth; and were abandoned by their own government;
That due to the influence of Israel's powerful supporters in the
United States, the White House deliberately covered up the facts of
this attack from the American people;
That due to continuing pressure by the pro-Israel lobby in the United
States, this attack remains the only serious naval incident that has
never been thoroughly investigated by Congress; to this day, no
surviving crewmember has been permitted to officially and publicly
testify about the attack;
That there has been an official cover-up without precedent in
American naval history; the existence of such a cover-up is now
supported by statements of Rear Admiral Merlin Staring, USN (Ret.),
former Judge Advocate General of the Navy; and Captain Ward Boston,
USN, (Ret.) the chief counsel to the Navy's 1976 Court of Inquiry of
the Liberty attack;
That the truth about Israel's attack and subsequent White House cover-
up continues to be officially concealed from the American people to
the present day and is a national disgrace;
That a danger to our national security exists whenever our elected
officials are willing to subordinate American interests to those of
any foreign nation, and specifically are unwilling to challenge
Israel's interests when they conflict with American interests; this
policy, evidenced by the failure to defend the USS Liberty and the
subsequent official cover-up of the Israeli attack, endangers the
safety of Americans and the security of the United States.
WHEREUPON, we, the undersigned, in order to fulfill our duty to the
brave crew of the USS Liberty and to all Americans who are asked to
serve in our Armed Forces, hereby call upon the Department of the
Navy, the Congress of the United States and the American people to
immediately take the following actions:
FIRST: That a new Court of Inquiry be convened by the Department of
the Navy, operating with Congressional oversight, to take public
testimony from surviving crewmembers; and to thoroughly investigate
the circumstances of the attack on the USS Liberty, with full
cooperation from the National Security Agency, the Central
Intelligence Agency and the military intelligence services, and to
determine Israel's possible motive in launching said attack on a U.S.
naval vessel;
SECOND: That every appropriate committee of the Congress of the
United States investigate the actions of the White House and Defense
Department that prevented the rescue of the USS Liberty, thereafter
threatened her surviving officers and men if they exposed the truth,
and covered up the true circumstances of the attack from the American
people; and
THIRD: That the eighth day of June of every year be proclaimed to be
hereafter known as USS Liberty Remembrance Day, in order to
commemorate the Liberty's heroic crew; and to educate the American
people of the danger to our national security inherent in any
passionate attachment of our elected officials for any foreign nation.
We, the undersigned, hereby affix our hands and seals, this
22nd day of October, 2003
