They could check out the Kennedy Museum at Harbor Point. It's next to the UMass campus and right on the harbor (duh). Of course, that is if they are democrats The archives are there as well and it's lots of fun to see historical papers and such - they even make you wear special gloves.
The Boston Public Library (first free library in the nation) is at the aforementioned Copley Place. They give tours. It's gorgeous.
This is the same area as the Prudential and Hancock towers and South End (restaurants). The church at Copley Square is gorgeous, too. You can just walk right in and look around.
Dina mentioned Castle Island but that is off of *South Boston*, not the South End. Completely different areas and not near one another
