Because Turning Point was filming, Martin and company HAD to pick someone on camera and not consider anyone off camera. They even had Andrea on hand to get ready to hoist up the winner amid great fanfare for the purposes of Turning Point. Joanna was still not quite 12 at the auditions (born 10/6/84) but still by far the biggest and the oldest of the ones to pick from, and I was very surprised that Martin picked her over any of the younger ones. Brittny was 7 in August 1996 and they probably decided she was too young to be a finalist (born 11/15/88). Larissa is only three months younger than Joanna, and may have been too big already to be considered, even if Turning Point had been there and they had been able to pick an Equity member. I don't know how old Alicia was at the auditions.

They should have just moved the Goodspeed Annie 20th cast into New York, as they did in 1976-77.
