audition video

by Julie Stevens (no login)

These auditions are so cute and the girls seem so excited. I don't usually hear "It's The Hard Knock Life" used as the audition song. Wish I could understand what they are saying. Does anyone know what production they are auditioning for - it was posted recently.

I think it's from Belguim

by (no login)

Hi Julie,

I can't be sure but I think it comes from Belguim. The video description is in Dutch, according to Wiki one of Belguim's official languages and I understand a little Dutch.

The description talks about how in 1977, the red-haired orphan Annie, stole everyone's hearts with the Broadway classics 'Tomorrow' and 'Hard Knock Life' and five years later a film was made. I believe this is some background for viewers.

The description then says that a Flemish (Vlamms in Dutch) production is now being prepared. Marijn Devalck, Sasha Rosen and Steve Beirnaert, the producers, I think, have started looking for a really good young actress to play the leading role. There are 350 candidates who have to prove that they can sing, dance and act at the same time.

As to how old it is, the video was posted very recently, as you say, and in the film they sing Een Zwaar Bestaan. This was Hard Knock Life in the Dutch version of Annie 2005/7 and they use the same lyrics, which are completely different to the lyrics from the 1997 production in the same area.

I'm not sure, of course, it's just a theory. We'll have to look out for a Flemish version of Annie.

to my non-U.S. friends

by (no login)

Hey Cecile and those of you who live outside of the U.S. I need some help. I am working very hard with my foreign sales rep to get some TV sales in other countries for "Life After Tomorrow." What we would like to do is put together a few fan quotes that we can include in the sales pitch.

So, Cecile, would you be able to write a few sentences about why you love "Annie" and why you are a fan of the show? You can mention if you have a favorite song in the show and that you enjoy watching performances of the show on You Tube and annieorphans.com. Your comments would need to be in French. However, if you could also translate them into English, it would help me to know what you wrote.

I'm looking for "Annie" fans in Israel, the Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Japan, Norway and Sweden, if possible.

Please send your comments to info@annieorphans.com

Thanks so much.

by (no login)

Yes, please. Have you ever seen any professional productions of "Annie" in Australia? I have a recording of an Australian production, but I'm not sure of the year it was made. If you could send me an email with your full name, age, where you live, and then a few sentences about why you like "Annie" and what you like about the show.

Thank you so much!

Peter Filichia

by Ned (no login)

Peter's column is great. When Wendy Wasserstein passed away, and he wrote a tribute to her, I wrote to him and he answered. That impressed me that he would take time to respond. I'm sure he's a busy man.

We returned home from Palau early this morning. We were there for a month with a group from the college where I work. The kids had a great time, but all of us are glad to be home. If you ever have a chance to go, Palau's Rock Islands are out of this world, and there are 1400 species of shallow water fish to see when you're snorkeling plus turtles, dugongs, stingrays, eels, etc. when you're a scuba diver (I'm not!).

Anyway, I'm glad to be back on the forum again.

Not affordable for most..

by Frustrated (at times) (no login)

Many kids, such as mine, are at a disadvantage. A majority of parents cannot afford to send their children to quality camps such as Stagedoor, Interlochen, French Woods, etc...
Fame should have open calls if they want to get the full casting experience by opening the process up to all income levels.
There are many talented kids who cannot afford the exposure that Stagedoor gives, who have realistic life experience they can bring to a role. They deserve a shot too.

We have tried the scholarship route, and even with substantial/partial funding, which we were very grateful for, we still couldn't make the numbers work. Thank you for mentioning though. I understand there are other ways to be seen, but I just wanted to chime in about "camp casting".

open calls

by Julie Stevens (no login)

First of all, I posted a link to the NATIONWIDE auditions for "Fame" a few weeks ago:

http://www.famecasting.com/?action=audition

So, Stagedoor Manor is not the only place the casting directors are going to look for talent. I'm sure they also went to performing arts high schools around the country.

In addition, I totally understand your frustration with how expensive these summer camps are, but there are PLENTY of talented kids who never attend summer camp and go on to be successful performers. There are lots of ways to provide training for your child and none of them are particularly cheap. Private singing lessons, dance lessons, acting classes, headshots, trips to NY for auditions, coaches, etc...all add up and make being a professional kid a very expensive endeavor. If having your child in show business is a financial hardship for your family, perhaps it is not the right time for your child to be pursuing it. I know plenty of parents who have told their children that they can pursue acting after they go to college or major in it in college so that at least they are at the age where they can get part-time jobs to help support themselves.

I also think that if you have a child who is itching to perform and train, there are always ways of finding "community" classes, free training, free headshots, and performing opportunities in community theatre. Money should not be the reason not to pursue a dream - even if it is the reason to not attend summer camp, which is a privilege, not a requirement.

Re: open calls

I auditioned for the "Fame" school, Laguardia performing arts high school in Manhattan. While I didn't go, I was accepted. One of the biggest perks of that school was that it's a public performing arts school, which is well known and provides a quality studio art education. Are there schools like this elsewhere for kids with dreams of performing who may not have the income for a private arts education?

Julie,
Thank's for your response. Please don't misunderstand, I never said that it was a financial hardship to my family. My child has had some training and has worked professionally. We also know many talented children, who have never attended performing arts camps. I was trying to make a point about how unaffordable some of these camps are and how there seems to be a recent trend of casting agencies showing up at these camps.
Thanks for the famecasting.com link.

Good points Julie. I agree, Fame casting will be searching high and low to find talent for the remake, including open calls. As far as frustrated goes, I think Julie and others were just giving suggestions since you said even with scholarship money you couldn't make camp work. Success can be had whether a teen attends camps or not.

casting vs publicity

by mom (no login)

No real reason to feel frustrated in regards to missing this type of casting. Although this film will require many actors with talent, big casting nets like this are typically for publicity for the film. They are looking high and low for the right talent, however, they have been casting for months in both LA and NY with callbacks already taking place. Due to content matter, they are also looking at 18 plus to play younger.

It is not unusual for films to do major open casting calls across the nation. But, it is to gain attention to the film prior to opening AND to get a big audience when it opens due to prior awareness. It even gets free TV publicity. Will some people get picked up as day players or background from these open auditions -- probably. Will they get cast as leads -- probably not (if you look at trends in filmmaking).

And I definately agree on the price of camps etc. Unfortunately, showbiz is typically a "rich man's sport." We don't live in a major market and must buy last minute plane tickets for every audition/callback. It requires major financial sacrifices from our family. Also means no extra spending money left over for "training" in places like theatre camp or even with teachers in major markets. Luckily, DD has had a chance to book some nice professional roles and use those as her training. But no getting around the fact that $$ can go along way to promoting the talent.

I totally agree

by CindyS (no login)

When they were casting "Hannah Montana", several young girls in Florida, including my daughter, were sent on agent calls, only to find out that they had no intentions whatsoever of casting outside of LA, and that the roles had been already cast prior to the auditions. It was for publicity and to gain attention from the right groups of people.

It's sad, but true. But, again, you never know, so it's worth going to these auditions. And, they may be looking for future projects, so you never know when you might be the right person at the right time.

Julie re: Life After Tomorrow DVD

by (no login)

Hi Julie,

I live in the UK and I bought the Life After Tomorrow DVD via the LAT website soon after it came out. I belive that, at the time, the website said, the DVD would be available for a limited time, after which it would not be available to buy again until Feb. 08

When it arrived, I saw on the back of the box that it was "not licensed for distribution outside the US" and that distribution elsewhere was "strictly prohibited". I'm confused, because I bought it via the LAT website. Also, although the display was not in the UK format (PAL), it would play fine on my DVD player, even though it is R2 and not multi-region enabled. I hope you can clear up my confusion for me.

Also, my version has a pale brown cover (not the red cover with Annie looking through the stage curtains) and there's no menu on it. The programme starts automatically, plays through and then the disk just stops. Is this version different to the version with the other cover?

Thanks

Alex

DVD confusion

by Julie Stevens (no login)

Alex:

If you bought the film from my website, www.lifeaftertomorrow.com, then you bought it before we had US distribution. Once we started working with the distributor, who only has the rights to sell in the U.S., they re-designed the box and asked me to add 45 minutes of addition bonus footage. If you had tried to buy the DVD off of their website, they would not have sold it to anyone outside of the U.S.

From what I understand, Amazon does ship outside of the U.S. and the DVD is available on that website. Believe it or not, my foreign distributor still has not found a deal in the UK. It's driving me crazy!!! If you would like to purchase the DVD and have any trouble online, I'm always happy to sell you one through Paypal.

Julie/Cecile Re: LAT DVD

by (no login)

Hi Julie,

Yes, I bought my copy via the LAT website. I'm quite sure now that it must be an early pre-distributor copy. I'm going to have a look on Amazon now as I'd like to get the other version. The extra footage sounds interesting.

Cecile,
Checking my existing copy (a pre-distributor copy) using the DVD software on my computer, I see that, although it is in the American display format, not PAL, it isn't set to R1. The default region before a region is set, is R2, which covers the UK and, I believe, France. As my TV is compatible with PAL and the American display format, this explains why the DVD will play for me.

I'll get back to you regarding whether the distributor version with extra footage will.

France is indeed region 2, as is the rest of Europe. It'd be great if the DVD with bonus footage hadn't been set for a specific region! If not, I'll wait till Julie eventually gets a deal with a British distributor (I know you will Julie!) and order it on Amazon or buy it on my next trip there.

I think I have figured out how to burn Region 2 DVD's on my computer. Do both of you need Region 2? Let me work on it today and see if I can get it to work and then I'll send it to one of you and you can let me know if it plays in your machine.

Julie: Regarding R2 LAT DVD

by (no login)

Hi Julie,

Yes, I would need the DVD to be Region 2. It can be in NTSC and not PAL but it has to be R2 because an R1 disk won't play on most British players. The pre-distributor copy I have, without the extra footage, isn't region coded at all, so that might also work, but I don't know how you remove a region code.

If you think you might have managed to do it, please email me about sending the disk- alex_mills@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks!

many orphans

by Julie Stevens (no login)

Jennine Babo (Broadway Cast) played Molly, Tessie, Kate and Duffy - I think - all on Broadway.

Stephanie Vine started out as the Swing orphan and then played July and Tessie.

Chris Noel started out as the Swing orphan and then played a few orphans in three different casts.

hello Annie fans

by (no login)

Yes, I played Drake and u/s Gary Holcomb in the 4th national. I have since played the role a number of times and am pleased to be in the Reagle Players production. Sally Struthers is a doll and the company is super. Mary Jane Houdine is choreographing and Bob Finch is directing and playing Rooster. It's been old home week. I saw Bill Berloni yesterday as he delivered the new Sandy, Oliver. He looks great and has a new book out called "Broadway Tails". I am super. I teach Drama and vocal music in Pembroke Mass and have 3 kids that are all involved in the arts. My youngest was Annie in the ANNIE, Jr. production at her middle school a couple of years ago. My son is in LA and is an assistant producer with the Discovery Channel. My other daughter is a senior in college, and Equity Membership Candidate, and is currently in the ensemble of "...Millie" at the Company Theater in Norwell, MASS.
I hope to see some of you at the Reagle Players production. I saw their production of 42nd Street last year, my daughter was in the ensemble, and they really do quality work. Let me know if your coming. I would love to know how any of the 4th National company are doing. All the Best. Terry Runnels

audition outfit

by Julie Stevens (no login)

That description isn't very helpful. Is the character a "regular girl"? If so, in what party of the country does she live, in what time period, and does she come from a rich or poor family? If you can answer some of those questions, that may help in figuring out what to wear.

Re: audition outfit

by nc girl (no login)

I believe it is in this time period. All I know, is it's about teens and a particular boy, who is a jock and hangs with the "popular" crowd. He is in a car accident that changes his life and decides to be who he really is and not how others want him to be. This girl character is his crush and symbolizes who he wants to be. It states that she is sort of funky (I'm guessing not too funky though) and is apathetic towards those she doesn't like. It mentions another girl in the character descriptions, who is tall and beautiful, which is what he is expected to like, but not what he actually likes. The charater my daughter is going for is short and cute. Not sure if this helps. I am thinking that instead of the cheerleader type, this character would be more of the musician type? It is a local film, BTW.

some suggestions

by Julie Stevens (no login)

It sounds to me like she is a girl who plays by her own rules and doesn't follow the crowd. It sounds to me like she may dress in her own style that is not trendy, like the popular girls. I would think more "artsy" or indie chick. Maybe even a bookworm who is more conservative in her dress. How about a fun 60's style flowing blouse (I forget what they are called) and a pair of jeans? Or perhaps something like what the singer Lisa Loeb would wear? Lisa always wears funky glasses and thrift store looking clothes - meaning vintage.

Hope that helps.

Re: some suggestions

Thank you Julie--actually, that was on the same line of what I was thinking--this is actually who my daughter really is, so would be a great part for her; however, we went and she didn't even end up reading for that role, but read for something that totally wasn't her at all--ha! She ended up reading for a pregnant preppy girl--quite an acting stretch, but that could be good, I suppose.

Just by looking at the pictures you can sort of tell who was cast. Under Kim Fedina's picture's there is one with Shelley as annie, all the first girls and Kim playing Kate. She replaced Shelley as Kate when she moved up to annie. Sarah was the swing then. Then in June they big vast change was made. kim moved up to Tessie then.

order of orphan replacements

by Julie Stevens (no login)

Sarah Jessica Parker was never the Swing orphan. She came in as July and understudy to Annie and replaced Shelley Bruce as Annie.

Kathy Jo came in as July to replace Janine Ruane. Kim Fedena came in as the Swing (I'm guessing she was the first Swing after the show opened) and then replaced Shelley Bruce as Kate when Shelley became Annie. That's also when Kathy Jo left to play Annie in the 1st National Tour and Sarah Jessica Parker came in to replace her as July.

While Shelley was Annie, Jennine Babo came in to replace Danielle Brisebois as Molly, Kim Fedena moved into the role of Tessie when Diana Barrows left, Jenn Thompson took over as Pepper when Robyn Finn left, Sarah Jessica was still playing July, Randall Brooks took over for Donna Graham as Duffy, Karen Schleifer became Kate, Joy Merri took over for Kim Fedena as the Swing.

This is where it gets a bit fuzzy for me - Karen, can you help??

At some point while Shelley was Annie, Penny Chaney replaced Joy Merri as the Swing orphan. When Sarah became Annie, Jodi Ford replaced her as July, Jenn Thompson left and Penny Chaney replaced her as Pepper. Laura Kerr came in as the new Swing. When Kim Fedena left, Tiffany Blake replaced her as Tessie and Stacey Brass came in to replace Randall as Duffy. I'm not sure when this photo from the UCP telethon was taken, but it kind of confuses me since Jenn Thompson is still there.

http://www.annieorphans.com/CastLists/BroadwayCast/images/TiffanyBlake_images/tiffany8.htm

but Penny's playing Pepper in this photo:

http://www.annieorphans.com/CastLists/BroadwayCast/images/PennyChaney_images/penny4.htm

I believe the big cast change came right at this time. The new group of orphans were:

Allison Smith as Annie
Jennine Babo still as Molly
Tiffany Blake as Tessie
Stacey Brass as Duffy
Caroline Daly as Pepper
Tara Kennedy as Kate
Martha Byrne as July

If you watch clips from the Prime Time Saturday special that is on the video page on this website and also featured in "Life After Tomorrow," you may recognize Allison Smith, Tiffany Blake and Martha Byrne all at that audition and all in the running to replace Sarah as the next Broadway Annie.

Julie's awesome

by (no login)

You are so versed on all this... I pale in comparison with my memories!

I thought I replaced Shelly as Kate when she became Annie - I didn't know Kim was there after she was swing. I know Kim left the show a few months shy of me (and I believe Jenn & Randall left with me?)... but not totally sure.

I was Kate for all of Sarah's performances as Annie - and understudied Molly that whole time too (since June of 78).... Janine, Randall, Jenn & I all started the same night, I guess Kim came in earlier - but that may have been her first performance as a main orphan (Tessie) when we started as well ...

I don't remember Joy Merri at all. I thought perhaps Penny came in with us as swing - but not sure.

Amazing... all amazing memories swirling around in my head now!

Kim and Karen as Kate

I'm pretty certain that Kim played Kate after Shelley became Annie because I have a playbill with her in it. You can see her as Kate in this photo:

I'm guessing Kim became Tessie when Karen (Kate), Randall (Duffy), Jennine (Molly) and Jenn (Pepper) joined the cast.

Videos didn't work for me either

Of course, I don't speak a word of Japanese but the message you get looks like the one I get when I try to watch videos on American websites, like American TV channels, and they say I can't watch the videos because I'm outside the US. Maybe you can watch the videos only if you're connected from Japan...

Sutton

She was great in the show. Since the show had so much controversy and didn't stay in NY very long Sutton didn't get much press. I'm not surprised at her success!

new movie

by Elizabeth (no login)

Does anyone know if any "Annie" alum or girls from the forum will be in the new AG movie? We heard a lot about the movie auditions, but I don't remember if anyone got in. I'm just wondering because my girls and I plan to see it.
