Shunted normal pressure hydro often has a decent prognosis, but a lot also depends on the patient's overall health, and I'm sure age figures it, too. I know that very elderly patients have been successfully treated, but I'm sure it varies widely, depending on several things.
Also, if the shunt is programmble, some things can change the setting, so it should be checked frequently if symptoms develop again or worsen. If the doctors say they can't do anything, another opinion should be sought.
