East of Eden?

by (no login)

You're on the east coast of? I had interviews on the two hottest days of the year so far!! I couldn't turn up in shorts either. And it's still pretty hot today and muggy too it's becoming oppressive. I know! Brits can talk about the weather for ever - it's never quite right!! No air con in my office but I do have one of those cute tower fans which wafts cool air gently over me whilst I toil over my computer.

Mission Impossible 3

by (no login)

Life feels like MI3 right now. Interviews went OK but didn't produce the desired effect so I'm just a bit depressed and weary. I am soooo sick of filling in application forms and preparing for interviews. Maybe I should just go for a 'sod it' strategy and not give a stuff.

At 4am I aim to be giving it big zzzzzzzzzz and go running in the evenings instead. Last week I ran 5km for a UK Cancer Charity and raised over Ģ150. It was the first time I'd ever done anything like that. There were 3,000 of us and it was such a buzz! Where do you go running?

mochagirl, thats great. i only go running at 4am when noone can see me.. or on the treadmill. i donated some cash to an AIDS "Race For The Cure" event once, just to placate my guilt at not participating and give to a worthy cause. Sorry to hear about the job interviews.. i'm sure things will work out.

Jet

by (no login)

Here's a question for a Melbournian (??). Ever seen a band called Jet? They have been in the UK recently and did Later (the best live music show on TV, IMHO)and the IOW festival. They're one of the best things I've seen in a long while - influences include The Jam, Beatles and The Faces. All good stuff.

Hello again and and and a question for mark

by ladyofthelake (no login)

Ok..... today I got my computer working again
puuuhhhhh, strange how much you can miss a stupid comunication thing like the internet... not that I have no life outside, but it is so fantastic to have the chance for keep the contact with people all over the world....
Ok, enough about this......

Howīs everybody?
summer is coming and hope it will stay a while....

And here is my question for mark.....
Hehehe, this time not about David Bowie.... donīt wanna bore you to much

Iīve read in your dicography (yes, I sometimes read more than only the mbīs)that you worked with that crazy chick Nina Hagen... How did it come to this? And is she as crazy while working as she is on stage and during interviews?
I donīt know this song, any idea, where to listen to a snippet?
Iīm asking that, because of all this revival boom and comeback crazyness, she is very often on tv at the moment and as crazy as I know her, when I was very very young (donīt ask, how long ago)......
Iīm just nosy, so I find it interesting to ask (ok, ok, it was more than one question, but..... )

Saw you on tv last weekend

by ladyofthelake (no login)

The german (or better austrian) tv station 3sat showed the gig of 2002 NY (Live by request)..... but, who was that old (ouch, please donīt tell him )jumping all the way in front?

Good show, but a bit to early for me, so I just saw the half.... and I was not able to record it (it takes to long to explain why).....

Than I thought you where 2 times on the same channel, because later on there was a Robie Williams gig... but it was also from 2002.....
I was a bit dissapointed

BTW.... I started to reanimated my little baby (fender strat) any ideas or tips for a good (very small) amp (not to expensive), because I want to use it in my flat and I life in an very old house.... you know ......

Hope everybody is well ...
And hope Iīll be online more often in a few days, when my pc-problems get sorted.....

Greetings to all of you,

What exactly was recorded for Toy?

by (Login AdamD)

Hello Mark,

The following tracks were recorded for Toy or at least rumoured as such. Many became bonuses and bsides in 2002. I was just wondering which ones you have a recollection of and what you think were the standout song(s) recorded in those sessions.

The London Boys

I Dig Everything

Can't Help Thinking About Me

You've Got A Habit Of Leaving

Baby Loves That Way

Conversation Piece

Let Me Sleep Beside You

Silly Boy Blue

Karma Man

Afraid

Uncle Floyd aka Slip Away

Pictures Of Lily

The Shadowman

Wood Jackson

Secret 1

Toy

Your Turn To Drive

Hole in the Ground

Miss America High

Space Oddity

Personally, I really love the live remake of I Dig Everything. This is largely because I think the original suffered from a poor 1960s production. Did you get around to recording a studio version of I Dig Everything?

cheers,
Adam

In fairness to Mark

by (no login)

In fairness to MP, he's probably (and rightfully so) burnt out talking about "Toy" and Bowie related projects, especially since, like any artist, hes most likely enthused about what hes currently doing.

I know Bowie fans are always gonna wonder about 'Toy', but what can you do..

Re: In fairness to Mark

by RABBIT (no login)

you're right....the curiousity of bowie fans probably always be there...

but it (Toy) is such an "old" subject...

who knows? maybe the whole album has landed "in the bin".....bowie never is one who keeps a "promise" ("outside" comes to mind)

he likes surprising people.....and himself, i could imagine - when you have new ideas and feel the need to get them out, then you leave the old ones behind.....they aren't as interesting/inspiring or as satisfying as you thought in the beginning. so you move on to new territory.....and if you pull it through within a certain (short?) period of time and feel you need to share it and feel comfortable with it, then you just do it - no questions asked!

i suppose that's what keeps him (and us) alive, so to speak!

now i'm just hoping he'll surprise us during the gigs in new york, etc. (in other words: in june!...........new york, here i come...and london, and, and, and!!!))
i'd love to hear modern love live, for instance!

i shall sit back and relax and let him and the band take me by storm again!!!

Re: In fairness to Mark

I agree, and please believe me that I have all the same questions and feelings regarding Bowie and the lost/unfinished projects. Its just, I'm seeing it from someone else's perspective, MP probably doesnt always want to be asked about Bowie.. especially when that particular area of their relationship happened 4 years ago.. that being said, im not trying to speak for him and he probably doesnt care.. im just saying, the poor guy's personal website mostly gets questions about "Toy".

Re: In fairness to Mark

i'm curious as well...but mp isn't the "right" person to ask...
he doesn't only do bowie (not to be misunderstood!!! )

he has enuff other projects going on (of which i don't always have the slightest idea, i admit!).

i came to mp's site after the bowie tour in 2002 and have quite enjoyed myself here - not only cos of bowie (back then), but also for the tidbits mark writes and shares with us and which i'm interested in and amuse me immensely (i love the way mark puts things in word! ), and for a quite a while cos of the contact i had with some people here....unfortunately the contact has "fallen asleep" a bit....but i still enjoy peeking in here from time to time....

this is a mark plati site, and not a bowie one...there are plenty of those to get infos from (eventually!!!)

Snow fun in the sun

by (no login)

Whooo great fun! Came back in one piece sporting that most attractive of facial tans that comes only with a pair of wraparound shades and a head band! Our instructor liked skiing off piste in the forest so there were many close encounters with various pine trees. The black runs were much safer. No trees for a start off but we did have to dodge other skiers who had stopped half way down and were trying to work out which way to point their skis next!

For anyone who would like to check out some piccies there are some posted at <http://paul9583.fotopic.net/c134891.html>;. I'm the one in the green jacket.

The link doesn't work does it? Try typing it into the address bar and it should go. Failing that someone from the trip is setting up a website for the best of the pics taken during the week so there will be loads - very boring for anyone not there probably!

I've never put video on a site, but I assume it's as easy as creating a link to the .mov file.

As for users only, if you're only using HTML, you probably won't be able to get it done. There's ways to do it and they usually involve a database and that means learning PHP or ColdFusion (if your ISP provides a ColdFusion Server). You'll need to create some sort of username/password utility that people can't just find and read. Since I've only done this with databases, I'm not sure I'm much help.

this seems really to complicated for a beginner.... I think I have to learn enough with that HTML, dreamweaver and p-shop things, so I just can upload the things, not only adult can be allowed to see

This video is about a b-netter party we did a whole weekend and so the easiest way to let them all see, what happend there (it was with people from 4 countries), is to put it on my site....
It was really fun but Iīm absolutly happy, that I was behind the camera and not on this video LOL

Brazilian Girls

by mp (no login)

if you live in or around NYC, check out the Brazilian Girls. They're a four piece band, none of whom are Brazilian (though one is female) who are a mix of house, dub, lounge, and God knows what else. It's quite an experience ... I'm mixing their record at the moment at a couple of different NYC studios. Check 'em out here, http://www.braziliangirls.info/

They play every Sunday night around midnight at nublu, on Avenue C and 5th. They also frequent Joe's Pub and, lately, the Blue Note.

Hopefully, they'll still be there in June ... it's quite a scene they have going on. They go on at 12:30 am (that's 00:30 to you guys) on a Sunday night (Monday morning, actually) and pack the place every time.

any gigs coming up?

by (no login)

Mark,
I remember you playing at the living room in a project and I missed it. I play bass in NYC band buzzuniverse, www.buzzuniverse.com, and have been dying to see you play bass again ever since Jimmy's Bronx Cafe, when I saw you play bass on "fame" and was honestly some of the best bass playing I have ever witnessed in my life.
I wish you the best of luck and would love to see you play again.

Living Room

by mp (no login)

Thanks, Greg ...

As a matter of fact, I'll be playing at the Living Room tomorrow night (2/26) with a band called Little Kitten Space Girl (check 'em out at http://www.littlekittenspacegirl.com/). It's a late one - 11pm ...

Did you know ...

by (no login)

... it's the 'enchanting' Mark Plati now at LKSG? Compliments all round! There must be some kinda gag in there about 'base'/'bass' but it's Friday afternoon. MAD over to you! If I lived in NYC I would've come to your gig. I get the impression the the Living Room is a fairly small, clubby kind of place, a venue similar to the ones on the NYC Marathon tour perhaps?

btw, will you be doing Bowie in a Field this summer?

living room size

by (no login)

the living room is much smaller than the kinds of places on the NYC-Tour. It has tables and a maximum capacity of probably about 100 people.

Great place though, shame I couldn't make it last nite.

Please keep us posted on your next gig mark...

Little Kitten Space Girl/The Living Room 2/26

by (no login)

You missed a great show if you wer'ent able to catch this one. Little Kitten Space Girl are brilliant. Truly. Very, very cool, I was so jealous.

Actually, for the first twenty-five minutes of the show, I had to stand out front because I did'nt have any photo I.D on me, and apparently I look like I'm 17! That was kind of annoying, but what can you do? Eventually the doorman took pity on me and let me go back!

So, there's another L.K.S.G show coming up, if you can make it, please do, it's entirelly worth it. MP also takes lead vocals on a meledy based on the classic 70s album "Frampton Comes Alive", so you just have to see that.

No, I'm joking about that last part.

A year from now, this band is going to be so much bigger, because their sound and style is just genius, take my word for it. Completely worthwhile.

OOooooh, NOW I get it

Mark, all these years, I thought you played bass (with a short "a* sound) and just assumed you liked to fish a lot. Now, if finally dawns on me that you play bass (with a long "a" sound) like the guitar.

OK, this changes everything.

From Copenhagen to Glasgow

by ladyofthelake (no login)

Ok.... I did my first step in doing a website....
With all the pictures I took while my Reality-Tour starting in Copenhagen and ending in Glasgow.....

I know some pics are crap, but I have them on this page, because it is my personal trip....and to my excuse I have to say, that the first pictures are taking with a camera you can use only one time ( I donīt know the english word for that) and the other pictures where taken by a crappy digital camera.... normaly Iīm a good photographer, but this stupid thing is tooooo slow..... I need your camera Mark
And, I have to say, that Iīm always to busy and fascinated in watching the shows, so I forgot very often to take pictures during the shows, so there are more pictures of us nuts bowienetters

Hope you have fun and here is the link:

website

by (no login)

Neat pics. I like the concept of the webpage.

From a technical perspective, I'd get away from the frames approach especially since some of the link names are long enough that they require you to laterally scroll to see the whole thing.

There's a whole lot of folk who get all uppity about using frames and claim they should not be used...ever I'm not one of them. I think frames have their place, tho. I've used them, too. Here's a site I did for a Little 500 bike team at IU where I used frames: www.cutters-cycling.com

What I would suggest is getting rid of the navigation frame to the left. Keep the main page the way it is. Don't dislpay the file name beneath the pic on the main page...just let is scroll pics. Have links below the center pic for each city you've visited and have it take you to a page with all the thumbnails. Beneath the thumbnails, have words that describe the pic, not the filename.

And don't get me wrong, you've made a wonderful effort with this. Webpages ain't easy. And your source code is nice and neat, too. That'll help you maintain it over the years.

Is Carla still around here? I'm sure she'd have some input, too.

Anyway, let us know whenever you update the site. It's always fun to watch a site evolve.

Thanks for the help and tips

by ladyofthelake (no login)

That was my first try in doing a website and I think it looks really unprofessional ( I know )
The album did photshop for me and I hadnīt a clue, how to get all the names and cities in there, so I put them into the file names (was my first idea and it worked at the beginning)
Thing and idea behind was, that I wouldnīt post all this pic by pic on the b-net message boards so I put them all together on a site.....
This site wonīt be my main site, so I use it in the beginning for playing around and look, if some things work.....

Iīm not sure about the concept of my main site, but I have some ideas.... I just have to find out, how to work with all those new things, like p-shop and dreamweaver..... easy to use, if you find out how, I know

So I will play around with this landofphantasie site and let you know.... it will be good to get some usefull tips and I wonīt mind any critics.... I can deal with crtics, because I want to learn and you just can get better, if you get tips from people who are already good in those things.....

So thanks for your comments and I will see, if I can do it better.....

Lady of the lake

P.S.: I will have a look at the side you did later....

Rip off what you want

by (no login)

If your site was your first effort, then you should be proud. A lot of folk never make it that far.

One suggestion about websites is that if you like a site, view the page source and copy the source. Just right click over a frame or page and select "view page source" or "this frame" and then select "view frame source." Why invent the wheel when it's been rolling for years.

And feel free to copy anything off my site.

Most sites look complex, but are really simple. Mine's simple. The only thing you wouldn't be able to figger out from viewing the source is the style sheet that I use and it's how I get the change of color when you mouse over the links. So, here it is:

.title {

Sure

by (no login)

I'd go in a heartbeat. There were many a times I'd be drivin' around in my pickup with a buddy or two, drinkin' cheap beer, listening to Frampton Comes Alive.

I love the old acts playing their old songs. Couple years ago, I went to see the Doobie Brothers and they just frickin' rocked 'cause they played just a few of their new songs and all of their old hits. And this is why I quit going to Jimmy Buffet concerts. He plays too much of his new stuff which basically deosn't match his older hits.

But that's just me.

And another thing

by (no login)

And that's why I keep going to James Taylor. I love the old James Taylor. And the new James Taylor sounds just like the old James Taylor. I don't want him to change. I don't want him to expand his horizons. I don't want him to "grow." Keep givin' me what I love.

And that's why I quit going to Aerosmith shows. Up until Pump, they were holdin' steady. Then Get A Grip came out and they sucked.

Yeah, I know, selfish as I can be, but I know what I liked and I want it to stay the same.

And when y'all get as old as me and Mark, you'll understand.

Got a really nice thunder storm down here in the Florida Panhandle...my new home for a while. Temperature in the 60s, nice cool breeze, nice thunder and lightning. Don't get no better'n this.

How's the weather up there in NYC, Mr. Plati?

cold, cold, cold

by mp (no login)

it's been colder here than I can remember. Painful.

I hate to disagree with you, Mikey ... but I do like when established artists go out on a limb from time to time ... depending on the artist, of course. Personally, I'd go bonkers playing the same songs, the same way, for decades. Then again, that's just me ... !

I saw Frampton in something like '77-78. It was one of my earlier concerts, and from what I can recall it was pretty cool by my teenage standards (the same year I saw Yes and Queen ... does that date me or what?) though I don't remember too many specifics from the Frampton gig (I remember way more of the Queen specifics, especially the guy in front of me who could roll a joint with ONE hand!)

I always deeply regretted missing Led Zeppelin on the '77 tour ... c'est la vie.

I still have my Yes T-shirt from the gig I think ... Ebay, anybody?
Go for it LOTL, what have you got to lose, really?

Well, I remember it didn't work well at all when Spinal Tap tried that Jazz-Fusion thing. Talk about jumping the shark.

And I really don't mind when long-established acts take a left turn here and there. I was a little concerned when The Grateful Dead dabbled in disco with Shakedown Street, but they always "came home" if y'all know what I mean.

Got nothing to lose really so get yourself a ticket and get down there. Lotl, will you post a review after, please? I was a bit of a Frampton fan way back when - I think it was the hair that did it for me! Cute!

Talking about old bands revamped - Yes in some lineup/format are touring the UK at the moment and I'd love to see them. Did anyone see Free and the fab Paul Rodgers first time round? I remember the first time I heard 'All Right Now' on a transistor radio. I didn't unfortunately see Free but did get to see Bad Company in my yoof. It was a treat to see Paul Rodgers on Later at Hogmanay(there's that word again). Just close your eyes and that voice transports you back. Magic!

Wasnīt really a question to go or not to go ( hey... sounds like Shakespeare LOL)
Just a question if anybody of you had already had seen him live, and could tell me something about him or the band.....

I mean I adore good guitarist... and I think he is one...
I love experiments and go out to see some new bands or old dinosaur musicians....
And I like to see them grow and how they change after all this years....

I mean, Mikey, musicians who donīt change their things from time to time it is like my 9 to 5 job...just a little bit later ( let me say a 11pm to 2am job)..... not more....

I think a musician has to change over years( good or bad) just to test him/herself.....

So I will go to the Frampton gig and will post a report here

Thank you all for your nice replies....

And ther weather report from cologne.. itīs getting colder and colder... sometimes snowing , most of the time raining.... and an ice cold wind.....
But I think nothing against the frozen NYC ( they say it in the news here so it must be terribly cold)

Paul Rogers

"I remember the first time I heard 'All Right Now' on a transistor radio. I didn't unfortunately see Free but did get to see Bad Company in my yoof."

Oh man, I had The Best of Free on 8-track and wore it out. In my mind, Paul's got one of the best rock and roll voices of all time.

Now, speaking of rock voices, in my mind (and there's a bunch of us in my mind) Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd was southern rock. The album Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd taught us yankees that there's some serious groovin' goin' on south of that ol' Manson-Nixon line!

Never mind rock 'n' roll Paul Rogers has depth and real soul in his voice too. I've got The Free Story double LP on vinyl limited edition (Ebay anyone?) and it's a treasured possession. Along with Ian Dury New Boots and Panties on gold vinyl. I also have All Right Now on 7 inch vinyl on the juke box - whoah crank it right up!! With My Brother Jake on the B side can't be bad.

I got into Lynyrd Skynyrd big time at college. A friend was nuts about them - practically thought she was one of them! Bit worrying at times.

Florida is Florida According to the locals, we're runnin' colder than normal, but it feels like brisk spring weather to me and I love brisk spring weather. Certainly hasn't stopped us from going to the beach every weekend (tho we're not wacko enough to swim yet...just wade). My family is adjusting. I've been down here a ton over the last fifteen years on business related trips, so I'm real familiar with the place.

I'll be missing Bloomington, tho. As far as small, midwestern cities are concerned, Bloomington is a sweet place to live. Indiana University provides a whole lot of entertainment and diversity that spills out into the community. You also have an abundance of parks, nature, and wilderness areas within 20 minutes. And yer only an hour from Indianapolis so you can catch the Big City things if'n y'all want.

But for a change, I think this Florida gig will work out. It's only temporary...a year or two. If we want to move permenantly, we have the option, but I have a feeling we'll head back to Btown.

Hogmanay, m'dear

by (no login)

is essentially New Year's Eve to Scots (and maybe others too) where ever they are. Apparently the word comes from the Viking ,meaning 'last day of the year'. So did you have a happy one?!?

2004

by (no login)

Yes, it was good thanks, not many Vikings around so it was kinda of quiet until the neighbours got the fireworks out in the wind and the rain. Hardly an advert for firework safety but quite entertaining. I've got a good feeling about 2004 -for Pisceans at any rate. Jobwise I have a couple of things in the pipeline so I hope one comes good and I go skiing in March - what more could a girl want!!

Actually I wanted to.....

As soon as I clicked "Post Now" I saw (and see) 2 Ads above:

1. Repellent for Rabbit
our #1 selling rabbit repellent (...)
2. ZooEasy rabbit software
complete and user-friendly breeding program (..)

(anyone else see this, or am i hallucinating again?! )

Mark, you had your hands in this, didn't you?!!!! :p
(Tis the season to be jolly, eh?! )

But a bit paradox, isn't it? on the one hand you can get rid of "us" on the other hand they advertise on how to let "our" population explode.....

Oh, well - anyway...

....in about 21 hours I will be off to London (again!) and celebrating with a very special (B - Net) friend!

So I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas now!
Make sure y'all get what you wished for, whatever it may be!

See y'all soon....

Florida Bound

by (no login)

So, this past fall me and the wife are talking about how we've pretty much outgrown our house. I bought it when I was single and doing a ton of business travel, so small made sense. Now it doesn't. Anyway, given that the market is slow in these parts, we figgered that we probably wouldn't sell until the spring giving us tons of time to search for another house.

Two weeks after our house is listed, we get a solid offer and accept it (closing date a month later) even tho we hadn't even started looking for another house. So, we searched the town and found a place and made an offer. The next day, I leave on a business trip and when I call home that evening, my wife tells me that she's decided she doesn't want the house we picked out...oh boy. It was looking like we were going to sell our house without having one to move into which wasn't too pleasing going into the holidays, eh?

So, I'm sitting in an airport waiting for my flight home from the business trip and I'm telling one of my program managers about this and he says, "Well, ya know, we have a program office in Panama City Beach, FL, and I need somebody down there for a year. Ya wanna do it?" Turned into a hella deal. My employer is paying my rent/utilties/transportation for a year, we get to bug out of this winter before it gets bad, and we can surf the online Homefinder.org for a year in a casual effort to find a house for our return to Bloomington.

Christmas came early this year.

I think so too!
these antiques are often quite nice to look at, but they just don't do their job properly!

A new chat this year? Hmmm....I don't think I'll have the time, since I'll be in England from the 24th til 28th (as I was telling you before Noah gave up!)...

Maybe on Sunday, January 4, to "ring (chat) in" the new year together?

When would you have time?

And here was me thinking exactly the same thing! Things have been pretty busy with job interviews, graduation and a db concert which was of course, just wonderful. They played Jean Genie so I was in heaven (reminder of teenage discos). Went skiing yesterday (indoors on the real stuff) and I do ache a bit in strange places today. So far managed to escape the lurgy which is plaguing many people here. Get well soon lotl! So how's everyone doing? What about a chat before we all get too far into the Christmas thing?

Letīs discuss music :)

by ladyofthelake (no login)

After I listen to the new GAD-CD and the not so new (but for me) Spooky-Ghost-CD, Iīve to say.....Iīm totally happy and canīt stop listen to them......

Never thought that a tough girl like GAD has such a romantic and wonderful side....she always look so.....erm...everything...but not romantic LOL
I love the GAD-CD...absolutly adorable......wonderful lyrics....wonderful voice.....wonderful instruments....
That she has a fantastic and interesting voice, I knew from the tour, but Iīve never expected, that it will be that good.......

The Spooky Ghost-CD is faboulus......this guitar,wow....so emotional...so letting (did I wrote that right?) you close your eyes and dream the perfect dream.....ups, Iīm a dreamer LOL
I didnīt had the time yet, to listen to the lyrics, but the music is fantastic.......I can understand, that it has to be fun, to play live with this guy, Mark...

Now I canīt wait for the Earl Slick-CD......
when will it be released?

"Maybe we should post in German from now on!"

I took four semesters of German whilst in college and ya know what's stuck with me? The bastardized phrases. Ich bin up gefucked. Ich habbe gepuked. Ich habbe pot gesmoked. Ich habbe bier gepounded. Ich moche out gepassed.

Oh, so you learned Germish?!
Well, how many German, French, etc. phrases are used in the English language? Maybe not as bastardized as in German, but they are there. Sometimes certain terms (e.g. "Angst") just transport more meaning in one language than in the native tongue?
But those phrases you mentioned DO sound quite silly!
(Some of 'em I never even heard here in Joymany (!)...what college did you go to?! )

"But those phrases you mentioned DO sound quite silly!

Those phrases might have existed before I first uttered them, but I did my best to make 'em up all by myself. I think it was my first semester of German when I was at Indiana University at the same time as MARK PLATI (which is where I first met the loveable hunk of musical genius).

Ya see, I've got an attention span of about three milliseconds and sitting in a classroom for 50 minutes usually means my mind is wandering for about 42 minutes and during that time, it can go anywhere. So, when we were learning the "Ich moche beir drinken" and "Ich habbe pot gerouched" stuff (please excuse me if I can no longer spell or speak in German), I logically bastardized the language. Ich habbe gefarted. Du habst einer pants geshitted.

Hmmm...well, you have mentioned the "Ich habe Pot gesmoked" about twice...did that stick to your mind after all this time cos of own experience?! See above quote: I mean, no wonder you had such a short attention span!

But, I must say - my attention span in Math wasn't always the greatest either, so: if your AS is about 3 mms. and you sit there for 50 min., does that really mean you have accomplished 8 minutes of attention?!

Everyone, get those Math books out!

Hey, I only did it because Mark was doing it. I'm such a follower and he has all those Jedi mind control tricks, ya know.

"But, I must say - my attention span in Math wasn't always the greatest either, so: if your AS is about 3 mms. and you sit there for 50 min., does that really mean you have accomplished 8 minutes of attention?!"

Well, attention isn't like a light switch. There's some ramp time between paying attention and not paying attention. And as you get older, that ramp time gets longer. Why, just the other day, I was setting a varment trap in my side yard to try and catch the oppossums who had nested under my shed and I looked over to the neighbor's house and he was cleaning his gutters and I got to wondering how we were going to be able to do both the Trick-or-Treat thing AND a hay ride on Friday. Anyone else like calamari?

I really lo(augh)ve that one
Itīs always funny what we all remember about another language, when we donīt practice it.
I can order a beer in 4 langugages and the spanish one really makes knots in my tongue LOL
But I get my beer there, so it canīt be that wrong
That spelling writing is really fun to read.
What I hate about the denglish thing are things like
notebook=laptop
handy= mobile, cell(a?)phone
and other examples. If we germans use english words for something, why has it be so different to that what the english and americans say?
Strange, how languages changes over years, but I really love words and what you can make with them

I'll be in Rotterdam on Tuesday as well! Maybe we'll have some time to meet in an relaxed (huh?! ) atmosphere!!!

Yes, Denmark is a lovely country, and the Danish are a very nice folk. I often spent my holidays there years ago. I always felt quite comfortable there. It's said that the Danish (just like the Dutch) supposedly don't like the Germans - for obvious, but old reasons - but I never felt unwelcome in either of those countries.
The times they are a - changing....and it's good that way!

Too bad you're not in Hamburg. But you will be in Cologne, of course...

So, see you here, there or anywhere!

Re: Rabbit's Riverside Rave Review

by RABBIT (no login)

Riverside?! Ummm....er...yes...I vaguely remember bein' there!!!
Sorry, but this RABBIT is totally out of order!

Somehow I managed to "meet" someone a few days before London! I've known the guy for 10 years (!!!) and I saw him the first time in about 2 years again on a friend's birthday ( Sept. 4) and it suddenly clicked at the same time between the 2 of us......what more should/can I say?! Oh, you know - these cartoon figures with little hearts in their eyes.....!

Oh, my goodness - and now I'm posting this on an open MB!!!
So who friggin'/ fuckin' (!) cares?! I'd love to tell the whole world about it! (hmmm...sounds familiar, doesn't it?! )

Ok, back to the original subject: Riverside was absolutely amazing! I actually managed first row !!!
David was in such a great mood, the band was fantastic, the B - Netters that I met were a lovely folk to be with, the new CD is fantastic - I've been listening to it ever since it came out, every single day (am listening to it right now!) - I absolutely love "Never get old" and "Bring me the Disco King" but I wouldn't be able to say which is my "fave" track. Each has it's own meaning, atmosphere and "personality" to me.

It was a great event that I will never forget...I didn't see much of London - actually only Hammersmith!! but I didn't go there to see the city of course!

And now I'm looking forward to the tour - COPENHAGEN: HERE I COME...and Rotterdam and Hamburg and Cologne and Hannover and Berlin!!!!!!!

I PM you because of Copenhagen, Rabbit.
Hope we can manage it, to meet there
We are off on monday after my work. We drive to Flensburg, stay there over night and drive early next morning to Copenhagen. So we have time to visit the city
That is the good thing at seating places...you have time to visit the city
On the other hand Iīm not sure, if seating will be that good....but wait and see.
3rd row doesnīt sound that bad to me.....
Iīm not in the mood of going at the moment and thought the last 2 weeks about cancel the whole thing(thatīs another long story, why and has nothing to do with Bowie or music anyway)....but now Iīm sure I will be going......I wonīt miss you guys there

Tomorrow Iīll be going to a RAy Wilson Concert. Thatīs something Iīm looking forward, too, aswell, because itīs in an old castle (and MP you know I love old castles;) )

Mochagirl, are you going to any Bowieconcert?

Sadly, it's looking unlikely I will make any of the Bowie concerts this time. When the tickets went on sale I was so deeply engrossed in completing my final year project, ticket sales passed me by. I will keep an eye out for some Birmingham NEC tix as that is my nearest venue - if anyone out there has got a couple they would be willing to part with for less than an arm and a leg they know where to post!!

I have been listening to the new CD and justlike Heathen each track will become a favourite as time goes on. At the moment I particularly like NKS and Disco King and the Joe Jackson inspired intro to Rebel Rebel.

Bursting the glamour bubble

by (no login)

Mark, thank you for posting the final part of last year's tour (is there a final bit to come?). It makes fascinating reading and a great insight to life on tour. It is sort of reassuring that things aren't always 5 star and glamorous in the life of a rock star and you're not immune to some dodgy catering!

Regis sounds like he could give Basil Fawlty a run for his money ........ or maybe it should be Beavis?

Is 'frig' a US commonly used word? Not one that gets used alot in the UK. Most times people just say f*?%k and be done with it.

Keep it coming.

Bubble Busting with Beavis Philbin

by mp (no login)

Gee, I didn't think I was bursting anything ... I mean, I suppose ANYWHERE you show up at 4:30 am is going to have goofy pastries. Except maybe the bakery. Perhaps we could play there next time, and cut to the chase. I can see it ... Slick and I could play at the grand opening of an Italian bakery in Brooklyn. One of those ribbon-cutting things. We'd get free canoli, I'm sure of it.

Yep, Regis was a scene unto himself. I really did enjoy it, and I hope it didn't come across like I had a bad time. It was just … surreal, as is most TV is when you see how it's done, I suppose. Then again, any process like that - be it making records, painting a portrait, cleaning the garage - when you're in on the nuts and bolts of it, it's all pretty out there.

And besides, I was primarily griping for my own amusement ... as one often does.

'Frig' is a way for people to say 'fuck,' in circumstances where you shouldn't say 'fuck', but you'd like/need to, without actually saying the word. It seems to be a pretty New York thing from what I can tell. I never heard anyone in Indiana say it. I did hear people there substitute the word 'fudge' for 'fuck' on many occasions, though.

One question - am I not supposed to type 'fuck'? I always see people doing that cute little asterisk deal ... you know, 'f*ck,' or some such. Are there laws or something on this thing that I need to know about? Or are people just being polite?

Carla, help me out ...

The Frig Thing

by (no login)

Sure you can type 'fuck' if you want to. I've heard it said here too but not that much. It's not a word I say that much under normal circumstances so I tend to stick an asterix or whatever in there - I guess I'm being polite. It's like the 'shĢt' and sugar thing, but I'm not that polite.

The whole bakery idea conjures up a vision - could this be a CD cover?!? If you use this of course I expect acknowledgement and the appropriate fee. What's canoli?

Us folk in Indiana never, ever, fuckin' say frig. We just go ahead and say fuck. Anywhere, anyfucking time. Bless me Father for I have fuckin' sinned.

And that reminds me of an episode back at ol' Indiana University where one of my frat bros had acquired about twenty pocket bibles (some religous fanatical group was passing them out), dressed punk, and walked around campus as a member of Punks For Christ. "We're Punks For Christ! Take a fucking bible!" Some folk didn't know it was a joke.

First of all, Iīve to say, I loved that song just by the title (OK, never jugde a song by itīs title, if you hadnīt listen to it), but, that title is fabulous.
Had so many thoughst about this song (and still not sure, what the song is about LOL).
so, my question is...is that true, I heard 3 guitars on this song( with my lousy pc-speakers)....?
And the melodic one, is it played by Gerry?
And did you played guitar on this song, too?
Any chance, to get the lyrics from you?
Have you done the arrangments (is that the right word?)?

So many questions, just about one song....but, now youīve time, to answer

I love this song, just by the short snippet, Iīm able to listen to

Oh, me luv...

by RABBIT (no login)

...you may be my savior!
I haven't the slightest idea where "well - priced" (=cheap!) hotels in London might be! I don't even know where that darn Riverside Studio is! I was in London once and that was in 1988....And I made a total fool of myself: I'll never forget it! My mother was working for Burberry's back then and had to go to London on a business trip...she took me along. I must say (to my defense!) that I had been living in Europe only about 3 years! Anyhow we were driving to the hotel by taxi and I saw a BP - station and said to my mother (in German), "Oh, they have BP over her, too?" My mother laughed her head off, as did the taxi - driver, even though he didn't speak German! Well, I had no idea that BP stood for "British Petrol"...OOOPS!

I can still laugh about that these days! That's one memory of London I shall never forget!

But, anyhow - getting back to the main subject :

Could you help me out with hotels?

I would forever be in your debt (ok, maybe not forever, but for quite a long time! )

.... just! I have endured what will hopefully be the worst migraine of my life. Am I being really dense or it might be the painkillers but you'll have to explain the BP thing.

Riverside Studios (they've got a website) is Hammersmith which is west end. It'd be good to be as close as poss to a Tube station so you can get back after the gig. I know there's an OK hotel in Tottenham Court Road where friends stay that shouldn't be too expensive but this is London - will find out name. Otherwise, check out websites, Rough Guides. Travelodges are always clean and reliable but not that central in this case. I don't suppose you want to leave it until you get here and check out accommodation desks at the airport and stations? Nah, probably not the best idea. I'll mail you.

Not yet, but maybe you could start a competition here and I'll win LOTL's, or maybe even yours!

Bowie's Reality tour

by RABBIT (no login)

Hey, Mark!

as you know, you will be missed there. Now I want to ask WHY you can't/won't take part....
Of course, you have been very busy with the RW tour and with Slick's CD...and it seems logical to me ( as a non - professional musician) that there just ain't no time...
But you were involved in the Reality - making...
Do you have other projects going on?
Or do you "just" need a break?
Or is it simply impossible to study all the songs just a few weeks before the tour, especially after the RW tour (as I said, I'm no pro...that's why I ask these "naive" questions)...

But, surely, you would love to be a part of it all, wouldn't you?!

I can only speak for myself (even though I know others feel the same way): I'm gonna miss you on the tour...

tears falling from eyes!!!!

I thought the tour was finished...*ahem*...
Don't have Mr. Williams' tour dates in mind...gotta set priorities (especially financially! )somewhere...in this case Mr. Bowie is top Dollar...ummmm...Euro.....umm...priority!

Just out of curiousity

by (no login)

How do you pronounce the 'Pough' bit of Poughkeepsie? Is 'pow' or 'puff' or maybe even 'poo'? Just curious.

As a non - NYer I would say Poe - as in Edgar Allen...
Don't know what NYers say, though!

Lights out in NY

by ladyofthelake (no login)

Lights out in New York

The stage of life went dark in a second
Feared and breathless
all lights are out

Think of the essential
remember your roots
Music without power
silence everyhere

Just the people screaming in panic
Confusion all around
Here a blast
There a crash

The stage of life went dark in a second
Feared and breathless
all lights are out

How to call the emergency
because of the heartattack of my neighbour
How to help the people
enclosed in lifts and subways

Here comes a man with a guitar
there is one with a snare
on the spur of the moment
some sing like in the old days

The stage of life went dark in a second
Feared and breathless
all lights are out

People who never spoke before
talking for hours
helping each other
just īcause they where there

Some run wild through the streets
headless,confused
some take the chance of the dark
to yell out for anarchy

The stage of life went dark in a second
Feared and breathless
all lights are out
