Just thought I would add a bit of info to the forum regarding the fuel tank sending unit. I have a 1980 Standard Roadster which has the 'extended fuel filler neck"
After some testing I determined that the sender was bad. A replacement unit was purchased from a local marine supply, Tempo # 280050 for about $30.00
Access to the sender is easy after the seat and heater core are removed no need to drop the tank. I ran the tank almost dry prior to beginning the replacement.
Note that the float assembly must be removed from the top plate before you can remove the entire assembly from the tank due to the size of the float, so be careful and hang on to the float and don't let it drop into the tank.
You must use the 'original top plate" and not the plate that comes with the replacement unit. The new sender unit fits nicely on the old plate with only slight re-work with the washer units to insure proper fit. The new sender and top plate unit can be assembled and installed into the tank in one piced due to the smaller size of the new float assembly.
The fuel tank is exactly 12 1/4 inches deep and the dip tubes and the float assembly are exactly 12 inches in length.
I checked the inside of the tank very carefully and found very little debris and no evidence of rust.
I replace all the fuel lines (2 sized 5/16 and 3/8) and clamps all the way to the motor and as a final step replace the fuel filter (Framm G22A)
The gauge seems to be quite accurate now but I will still use the "100 mile rule" for the first few fill ups just in case.
If I can help in any way please feel free to contact me.
