I ordered a top for the Motor Car, should be here in 4-6 weeks just in time for Springfield meet. In the catalog it is recommended to get the Top Pads.

What are the Top Pads and what do they do?

Thanks!

Thanks Pat!  I have read through the July 22nd thread.  In fact that's where I acquired the title for this post in hopes that anyone searching for this topic in the future will find the profusion of information available on our fine forum.  Within the results of my research I found a question on wear through that anxiously awaits a response and a mention of reduced Flap, yet I remain curious to the purpose of the pads.

Is there more to the story beyond possible wear and tear and a reduction in Flap?

Macs Top Pads

I have had other convertables and the top pads were to protect the top where the bows support it from ware. They do also make it quieter.

DAVE: I ordered the Mac's Black Canvas Top and had it installed. They recommended that I buy the Top Pads. They are made from same black canvas, about 6 inches wide and about five feet long filled with cotton. I had my top installed by a guy who had the tools and knowledge. There was NO WAY we could have used the pads because if we followed the instructions and wrapped those heavy pads around the thin Shay supports the top would not have fit. If you need a set I have them in my basement that have never been used.If you need pictures just let me know... DAVE SHANK

Dave,
I installed the pads on my car. They are made for the original model A and are too long and too thick. I adjusted them to fit length wise and split the cotten padding in half. I really think you can go either way. I'm sorry I don't have a good picture of when I installed them.

Thank you gentlemen, I think I'll try to install the pads like Ron did. My old top is showing lots of wear in the corners and the bows look like they might punch through at any moment.

Dave, if you get a chance to send pictures I certainly would appreciate it.

Thanks again!
