I have a Shay 55 T-Bird that is going to need painting. The body shop I took it to say's it will cost between $6,000.00 & $8,000.00 to just get ready for paint. I am not sure they have a lot of experience with fiberglass. I have to admit that the body is a little wavy, but it only has 15,xxx miles on it. I am in the Kansas City area & it would be nice to have it ready for the convention. I have limited body repair experience with metal and none with glass. Any ideas?

T-Bird

March 28 2009, 5:32 PM

Lance,

I am going to do the same thing with "Shay-Bird", and I have been given the names of five possible shops here in the Springfield area to contact by a paint specialist for O'Reilly Automotive. I am waiting for better weather to take the bird to these shops for an estimate. I hope to get some estimates this week.

I will keep you informed of what I find here in this area.

I thought I seen that in your Facebook listing. Is that a Shay Model A or a Ford Model A in the picture too.

Let's paint

March 28 2009, 6:42 PM

Lance,

When I had my 'bird painted about 3 years ago, it cost me right at $4,200.00. The body shop was well experienced with fiberglass as they do a lot of Corvette repair. They disassembled mine and spent hours upon hours block sanding the body to get the waviness out. Don't let them skimp on the body preperation. You'll regret it if you do.

Second, $2700 to sand down, repair fiberglass and repaint.
