I'm looking to put larger wheels and bigger tires on my Shay for a better, smoother ride.
I don't know what size wheel I need, nor where to buy such. James

James,

Our site has a useful search feature. Try that, as this has been discussed alot on the site through the years. I am sure you will find enough information to answer your question.

James,

Larger wheels are GREAT.

You have to decide how you want the car to look.

I almost changed to the Hot Rod look. Maybe another car,the wife will kill me.

I liked Ron Mast red spoked wheels but just wanted a larger diamenter.

I already had 600/650 x 18 on my truck so knew the drove great.

Rally America 18" wheels, 4lug, 600/650x18 Firestone from Coker

This is a picture of the truck and the car with the orignal wheels

Weather was nice yesterday, had them both out for a drive.

Rain and 48 today, got to enjoy the day when you get them.

If you want to go El Cheapo

April 6 2009, 11:25 AM

If you are limited on your budget you might consider this.
15x7 steel wheelvintiques from Summit: shipped for $240, these are 4 lug.
215/75R 15 Goodyear Whitewalls Viva 2, from Wallmart $260 mounted and balanced.
So, for 500 bucks total....

Need to add some for painting rims, new valve stems, center hub cap and any taxes. Still all in all not too bad, for 4 new tires and new rims.

Re: Drive.

Hi Gary,

Well it was a real nice day to play with my toys.

I was out for a ride with the Shay and drove by my son's house.

He went for a ride with me and we drove back to my house so he could drive the truck, he likes that better.

We then switched, and he loved the greater leg room because of the seat improvement this winter. He also agreed that the Shay drives much better with the larger tires. He thinks it has more pickup from a stop, but he hits the gas a little harder that me, I think it is the same.

A nice day for our own little road rally around town and blow the OOGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH, fun day.

When you snow melts you too can go play.
