Grant Wood Steering Wheel

I wanted a WOOD STEERING WHEEL for my 1980 Shay though I had replaced the original FAIRMONT wheel with a GRANT last year.

I bid on a few "used" wheels on eBay but decided that when the price was right on a NEW one, I would buy it...That time was a few days ago when I did a BUY IT NOW on eBay for about $92.00, plus shipping from JEG's, one of the countries' largest auto parts supplier...The listing said the wheel was MODEL 377 which should be the same as GRANT P/N SKU 1171.

Attached is a photo...Took all of 5 minutes to install as the hardware was already there.

I would recommend checking JEG'S out on eBay if in the market for a replacement steering wheel as they sell many types..This one in the GRANT catalog lists for $272.45 so you can see that the price was "reasonable" in the general scheme of things.

I love it----wish I had one. Did you have to have an additional install kit?

Reggie,

Looks REAL nice, LOVE that wood look!!

Looks like the same wheel I have on my truck.

It was on the truck when I got it.

Mine is a Lecarra on the truck, but I have a nice Grant wood wheel that I put on the Shay.

Grant Wood Steering Wheel

April 10 2009, 3:52 PM

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the notes...Very positive!!!

As far as using or having an installation kit, the answer is YES...All GRANT steering wheels need an installation kit...As I had mentioned, but maybe not clearly enough, was that I installed another new GRANT steering wheel some months ago but my "heart" was set on a WOODEN WHEEL....That first wheel, model 990, which I bought NEW off of eBay, was $59.00 plus shipping, is now sitting on my work bench looking rather forlorn!!

For that CHROME and RUBBER steering wheel, Model 990, I bought installation kit #4282 which is the correct kit for a STALK MOUNTED HORN....You can use GRANT #3249 as well which difference is only for a CENTER MOUNT HORN...For the FAIRMONT STEERING COLUMN, with kit #3249, you will just end up with a couple extra parts like horn wires.

Installation kits can be bought directly from GRANT, on line from eBay or AMAZON.COM for $20.00 to $25.00....Also, many auto parts stores like ADVANCE and others, carry GRANT products...Kit #3249 is more easily obtainable as more kits were produced than kit #4282....Different kit numbers are required for GRANT PREMIUM steering wheels such as the BANJO type.

Looking back at the 990 installation, there was some "effort" in removing the FAIRMONT steering wheel but I used a RUBBER HAMMER under the wheel and it "popped off"....Wheel removal kits are relatively cheap if needed and many car parts stores will let you use theirs FREE OF CHARGE if you buy a steering wheel.

My reason for writing the first note and the enclosed photo was mainly to emphasise that for a few dollars more than someones USED steering wheel, you can get a new one by shopping around...My experience with JEG'S was 101% positive..It took three days to receive...Super fast!!!

I will restate one important item about GRANT products...If you buy from GRANT, no offence meant, but you'll pay a premium price from the manufacturer.

Grant Wood Steering Wheel

Forgot to be more specific..I DID NOT buy an additional installation kit..I used the same one from the first GRANT steering wheel installation.

I also used the old non-functional center horn kit as well...Mine has the FORD script...This part is held in by 5 Allen-bolts.

When buying any GRANT steering wheel, make sure the installation kit will fit the wheel.

So what I have sitting on my work bench is a bare steering wheel with neither an installation kit nor horn kit.
