TRUNK STRAPS?

I'm wondering about the trunk straps. My question is are they really strong enough to hold the trunk in place?Has anyone mounted the tunk differently independent of the straps?
I'm think more like some carriage bolts from the bottom of the rack through a piece of steel with a shallow wing nut or just a plain nut inside the trunk. This would be on both sides. The piece of steel can be covered in vinyl then it wouldn't be a concern as to scratching the chrome of the rack. This would also make it pretty hard to steal as well as being very secure.
The bottom of my trunk is already covered in metal.

Any comments or other suggestions please.

Chuck

Trunk Straps

Hi Chuck,

My original 1980 Shay trunk, is NOT bolted to my original luggage rack....It does have a 1/2 inch recess which allows only about 1/4 inch per side movement....So far, no problems....The trunk also has metal corners so basically, it's metal against metal whenever there's any movement....Front to rear movement is nonexistent.

A lot of owners have changed their luggage racks to the newer kind with wood slats...As the trunks sit ON TOP rather than IN the racks, there should be some kind of securing through the bottom with a couple bolts...Once in place, they're invisible.

Hi Reggie
You must have been siting on the site as that was a super fast response.
I figure I will go with my idea .What I want is a easy and fast way of securing the trunk as well as ease to remove.I do have the chrome rack with the wooden strips.
As to making the the bumper mounting bracket more secure in a previous thread I must say it works extremely well
Thanks
Chuck

Trunk Straps

Thanks Chuck,

Just coincidence about the timing..I do check the FORUM two or three times per day or whenever I'm near the computer....As you can probably tell, I do like to get involved with questions and problems as well as solutions....Hey, we old retirees have to have a "special purpose"....Can't watch JUDGE JUDY all day!!!

I do like the looks of the replacement luggage racks but some of the wood I've seen, leaves a lot to be desired as it's an ASIAN hardwood and not real OAK like days of old...One member of our Venice, FL AACA, made new wood strips out of OAK and stained the strips a more "neutral" OAK finish...His strips had too much of a "reddish" tint.

NOW...For a TEST....I used the words "SPECIAL PURPOSE"...Does anyone know which comedy (first clue) movie it was "poetically" used with great and bawdy liberty????

Reggie
I know what you mean about the wood strips.I just refinished the strips on the rack.I used 4 coats of clear coat.It will have to do for this year
I did make my bolts up to secure the trunk to the rack.Sqaures of 1/8th were derilled and then filed to match the carriage bolts.Covered the squares in vinyl and tapped the carriage bolts into place. The covering helped even the bolts did not turn.I did have to put a 3/8th spacer so the rack was not distorted when I tightened the bolts.I also covered a piece of foam with carpet to cover the bolts.

Trunk.

Are you saying the new luggage racks have wood inside of them? You say the trunk sets on top?
