John I agree Kentucky is a beautiful state. When I was eighteen I was provided an all expense paid trip to a location near Louisville, including air fare and a small stipend. It was a great learning experience with some classroom instruction and many strolls through the country side and many oportunities for camping out. One of the more memorable times was a casual stroll of thirty miles on a 95 degree day carrying a full field pack and an M-1. I did enjoy the scenery but I am sure I would enjoy it more driving a Shay.
Sounds like you took basic training at Fort Knox...Been there done that back in 1951... what a memorable experience... At the time I was a resident of the Buckeye state
