My Shay came with adjustable spoke wheels and they are now out of true. Does anybody know how to true these wheels?

Truing Spoke Wheels

April 29 2009, 10:12 AM

Hi Terry,

There are many web-sites that can provide basic information on how to true wire rims....Here's one:

http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan3.html

If you use your providers SEARCH engine, just enter something like HOW TO TRUE WIRE RIMS and a lots of sites will come up, most pertaining to bicycles but a few for automobile wheels like the one I provided above which is a MORGAN auto site.

IMPORTANT: Some Shay's came with adjustable spokes and others not so it would depend on the type you have.

If your "out of balance" is minimal, I would think a good shop that balances wheels could fix your "wobble"....Remember, if you go the balance route, have the shop put the weights on the INSIDE of the rim so not to blemish the outside...A good example are my rims which were balanced and then painted over the wheel weights????

Hopefully, someone else that has a Shay can provide more vivid and detailed information.

Reggie

Wheel Trueing

April 29 2009, 1:26 PM

HI Everyone:

Back in the old days wheels were trued by hand and probably still are today if they get trued up.

I do not know, but suspect any tire shop that can sell and mount tires for these wheels will be able to true them.

I would also go "high teck" and have them put drops of something like "Loctite" on the spoke threads to keep them tight.

The problem is (unless U hit a curb or sizable rock and bend something) that spokes get loose and the wheel begins to wobble.

There is both lateral and radial run out to check for so it must be done in a stanchion and unmounted.

Just exactly like bicycle wheels, just bigger.
