Looks really good Bob and dresses up your Shay a lot. Thanks for the picture.
That was the first thing I did when I got my Shay was to add a chrome tailpipe. I could tell the car had never had one on it because I could see that the black paint on the frame was pitted above the tail pipe from the fumes.
The only other thing...given the chose between chrome and polished stainless steel, buy the SS because it will last a lot longer. Not pit or rust, but will cost you more.
We're in a all-suite hotel in Farmington, CT which has a customer computer terminal but will be moving out of here later this morning for the next week to spend a week at our timeshare in Westbrook, CT which is on the shoreline...There are no internet connections there so, for the next week, I promise to remain silent....After that, we return here and will be on the internet again before heading back to Floida on May 27th.
Anyway, a few of us Shay owners have found the "flared" type I wrote about....Most auto parts suppliers have them and most probably companies like SPEEDWAY and or Mac's will have them...The are embossed with the FORD logo and look rather "spiffy"....I bought mine at a car show for $15.00 and they are an alternative to those nice looking round extensions.
Do you cut the pipe back and then put on the chrome extension with an adapter?
It's a great look and I just find it easier to have the parts on hand before I take on a project. Albeit a small project, none the less, parts in hand are easier for me.
Hi Steve, My Shay is pretty much all original. Existing Tailpipe is 1 3/4" Dia and sticks out about 4" from the ending cross member of the frame. Bought a 2" tip. Got it at Napa. Was real cheap. Just regular chrome. not SS, straight cut with rolled edge. Less than $5. I didn't do any cutting.
Also thanks for link to pictures of your car. Where do you keep them all?
Nice collection you have. Will send you an email in a day or two..
I decided I wanted to do something this past weekend & picked up a tip with resonator & adapter. Cut the pipe shorter & installed, but wasn't happy with sound. It was blah. I tried a different tip I had with same results.
I think I'm going to disconnect the muffler and see how the sound is at that point. Then I may just run a straight pipe 3/4 of the way back, much like the original A's were done.
Lets us know how it sounds with no muffler and just a straight pipe. If you decide to do it? It'll be interesting...
Or maybe replace the muffler with one of those "Hollywood mufflers". The one you can look straight thru the pipe. Not legal in CA, but bet you'll never be checked or stopped.
Here's a couple photos I promised of the FORD SCRIPT EXHAUST DEFLECTOR.
Though I purchased it at a local auto flea market, you can order same from Mac's Auto Parts under part number 51A-18259-A @ $14.95...Mac's has several choices of flared deflectors.
When you look at the Mac's catalog, you'll see that the "base" of all deflectors comes flat...You can bolt the ends together (not nice looking) or you can use my method which is to use a 2-inch RADIATOR CLAMP...It makes for a "neater" finished look.
I also added the BLUE PAINT to the FORD LOGO...Brush on, wipe off.
Thanks for asking...YES, I'm back home in Florida..Arrived last night...It was 93 degrees today and HUMID!!!! Decided NOT to go to a car show tonight because of same.
As I had previously mentioned, I had WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS away from the FORUM....I'll try and be somewhat less enthusiastic and not overburden the "system" with all that information and those answers I've gleaned in the past two years of Shay ownership..
Reggie that's a beautiful job on the tailpipe endpiece.
Update on my tailpipe. Nothing's as easy as it first appears. Got under the Shay Saturday & unbolted the muffler, looked like a newer replacement. NO movement, Ugghhh...
Someone had tack welded it in place Jig saw in hand I committed to the job & cut the pipe just in front of the muffler. Starter her up, and sounded better.
Got a 1.75" adapter to 2" & unfortunately settled for flex pipe to the back with a downturn.
Drove her 50 miles yesterday & the sound is much improved. More of a putt-putt, but still relatively quiet. Catalytic converter muffles the sound.
The flared FORD tailpipe DEFLECTOR is sort of nifty...Different than some, but really not true to the 1929 time period as all Model A's didn't come with any exhaust tip, chrome or otherwise that I could find....Another of the decisions we all make to make our cars one-of-a-kind...
As I had mentioned, the cost is cheap but there are alternatives as to how to install...I took the radiator clamp route rather than the bolt route most "normal" buyers would.
This site sure has a wealth of interesting folks, information, instructions, alternatives, modifications and so forth so we each can make our rides unique....I'm continually amazed as to how many Ford Model A parts can be "adapted" to dress up our Shay's and Camelot's.
