Anybody using one? If so, what did you use and where did you locate it. I was looking at the Summit Brand 20 oz round polished alum. tank for $45. Do you think 20 oz is large enough? Also, any better place to shop for one or better recommendation? Or maybe just a plain plastic container would be OK too.. thanks, steve

Steve why do you need the tank? I have had my shay for almost four years and not had a problem with cooling even in July parades. Could this be a matter of "if it ain't broke"?

As Jim asked, are you having problem with the radiator over flowing? Are you filling it to high? Would be nice if you state a little more on this question.

No... no problems. Car runs just fine, no coolant problems. Just most modern day cars all have overflows. Suppose to be better and does not allow any air into the radiator since the radiator is completely full all the time. Suppose to be better/ less maintenance/ and life of the radiator and the cooling system. Less calcium deposits and etc.

Maybe some one with more expertise on this can chime in.
I know these are some of the reasons.

Should be easy to install, particularly the cylindrical type. I was thinking right along side of the left side of the radiator where the overflow hose is now.

Steve - I put in a plastic recovery tank at the top of the radiator. It's not too pretty, but works fine. Did it for just the same reasons you state.

We have had our Shay going on 13 years and only had problem once when I fill it up to high and it came back out. My mechanic said not to run it full, leave room for expansion.

Burp Can

I'm using a Marvel Mystery Oil can for the retro look. I located it on the left side of the radiator.

Steve,

Windshield washers show up on some Shay OPTION sheets as an additional-cost ACCESSORY.

My Shay did not come from the factory with the electrically operated windshield washers...In the washers tank and motor's place, is a RADIATOR OVERFLOW TANK which you can see in the attached photo....

As the guys have said, never had a problem so the tank may not be necessary...In my case, it's there, so be it.

For the record, the only identification on the tank is: TAIWAN 6082600. At least you know its country of origin....The numbers would be the part number....It harks back to the "good old days" when things came from TAIWAN, now it's CHINA.

Hi Reggie... again, good to have you back from vacation.

Interesting...about your "no washer".
What about the "nozzels" on the cowl? I know you have replaced it, but what did you have originally? No nozzles? Just the plastic silver colored cap?

And what about on the steering column. Does the lever just say "whipe" and NO "wash"?

Windshield Washers

May 30 2009, 11:34 AM

Hi Steve,

The old fake gas cap had no lines or nozzles..As you mentioned, it's been replaced with a real 1928/1929 gas cap.

With or without the washers, the stalk still says WASH and WIPE as there really wasn't a good enough reason for cost savings to use a different column.

I know I have read where some people have eliminated the electric wipers and went with the hand wipers. And some have eliminated the washer. Therefore, has anybody removed the Wash/ Wipe lever all together and plugged the hole in the steering column?

Windshield Washers

Steve,

To remove the WASH/WIPE lever, you must remove the switch assembly which means some disassembly to the steering column...Probably 15 minutes work.

Not sure if doing so after removing the wiring harness from the switch that a circuit may be "broken" thus the connection may be required????
