Anybody have a Home Made Hood Prop?

I was using the "search" and also looking in the catalogs and just thinking about making my own. Maybe use some Oak from Home Depot and small U bolts and mounting up close to the radiator. Looks like it could be real simple to make. Just a solid piece of Oak with notches in the Oak to hold the hood and held on to the rods with 2 U bolts.

Anybody made one? Or any ideas, suggestions or pictures? Thanks

All the Model A dealers sell hood props that work very well.

Steve

I bought one and with the extra parts they give you , I made one that I think is better.

You do not have to fold it in and out and it opens wider.

The channel metal is from a shower door.

The hook part is from the kit.

You could make the hooks.

Thanks Bob for the pictures. You Gave me some good ideas and where to mount mine. I was thinking of something similar, but out of Oak. But I do have some various scrape metal/ aluminum laying around. I can see what you mean when you used the old shower door molding. Good idea..

Hi Bob, one more thing..
Could you please give the measurement between the "hooks" where you hood rests? On less measurement I will have to worry about.
Thanks, steve

Steve,

I know it has been mentioned, but you can avoid a lot of work for around $25.00 bucks by buying a HOOD PROP kit made to the car.

Steve,

My hood prop is 12" center to center on the hooks were the hood rests.

It is moumted 23" from the firewall.

The one that is sold is mounted much closer to the firewall and you have to fold the hooks in and out.

It just did not hold the hood open wide enough for me.

The kits gives you 2 sets of hooks. I sold the factoy made parts with the longer hooks to someone on this site years ago.

I LOVE your idear about making it out of oak.

I try not to do much during the summer, but drive and enjoy the toys.

I have to remember next winter to make one out of oak.

Now thats 2 great idears you have given, finding my truck and now this.

I guess thats what this site is all about , sharing idears and if someone likes them ,go with it or just skip it.

NY Bob

Hi Bob, still working on mine. I am using piece of 1 x 2 Oak I got Home Depot and using your dimensions and Jim's idea. I used a Dremel tool to "route" the slots by hand at an angle for the rods to fit. Thanks, Steve

Wood hood prop

June 25 2009, 2:44 PM

Thanks to Jim Sheppard's pictures I have made a wood hood prop from his pictures.

I used a oak 3/4 thick 2" wide by 14" long

Use 1/4 x 2 1/2 carrige bolts

The "notch" is 3/4 " from the end.

Drill all the holes and make the notches before making the cut out with the saber saw. If necessay, dress up the 5/16 holes with a rat tail file.

This hood prop hoods the hood open nice and wide.
