Ladies and Gents, I'm in disbelief as my stick shift broke going into neutral for no apparent reason, just beneath the floor!! No pressure or strain - it just happened! After unscrewing the floor plate, I see there's appx. 3" of stick remaining at where it broke! What to do? How to fix it? Where to get a replacement, etc? - Ah Chihuahua!! James
The original Pinto shift lever was short. Shay welded an extension on it. If you have somewher around you that does welding you can take the 2 pieces to them. Replacement shift levers are very scarce.
In the Modern A Owners Assembly Kit Car Manual it shows how to cut and weld back together the shift lever from a donor car. So I would say take it to a welding shop and see if they can weld it back together for you.

DON'T REMOVE THE SHIFT LEVER until you remove the reverse light switch assembly. This adds another $28 bucks to the job if you don't. When you pull the lower shift assembly out it will rip the end off of the switch.
The weld is most likely broken immediately above the ball pivot point. The upper rod goes into the ball about 1/2 inch and welded around the neck of the ball. That is where mine came loose in May. I managed to remove the entire transmission before I realized it was the shift rod weld broken. Make sure there is no weld slag on the top of the ball that will interfere with the nylon bushing.
