Okay guys (and gals) what is your solution to getting your lugnuts off without tearing up the paint on your wheels. It is such a supertight fit, I was going to purchase a skinney socket to see if that helps, but wanted to know if anyone overcame this problems first. Tx Dave

Same on the socket. When I bought my Shay I wanted to check the wheel bearings and brakes. I don't think the wheels had been off in 25 years so after getting the correct socket and removing the wheels I coated the lugs with anti seize which I put on any bolt exposed to the weather.

Dedicated Lug nut

July 27 2009, 7:13 PM

One more trick to use if this is a dedicated lug nut socket. Meassure the depth of the socket and the length of the lug nut. Cut a piece of rubber hose about an eighth of an inch longer than the difference. This will prevent the socket end from touching the wheel face. Try it by hand first. When you have the right dimension, put a little silicone between the hose and the socket to hold it in place.

Good idea Dave. I am going to do that today for my socket. Thanks, steve
