I've got ours pretty well cleaned up in this department except for the small waterline to the intake manifold and associated junk. That water line appears to trigger a temperature switch to open a vacuumn line from the carburetor to the PCV and the fuel venting. What alternative hook up do you use when eliminating that water line and associated junk? Karl
No, that line is a return line from the hot water input (through the manifold-head connection). Purpose is to keep the manifold warm during cold weather.
O.K. that makes sense that it's a return line, but on the lower left side of the intake maniflod is what I would call a thermo vacuumn switch controling vacuumn from the carburetor base. This is connected to the PCV valve and another swich/valve which controls the venting from the charcoal canister. I assume if I eliminate thet return line I can go straight to the PCV valve, but i'm wondering about the carbon vent system. Maybe just get a vented gas cap and eliminate that system entirely? Karl
I no longer have the Shay, but had a picture of the back (towards the rear) of mine, and there is a small line and a valve of some sort but dont know where it went. My PCV valve was in a direct line from the valve cover to the lower port on the manifold. Maybe different kinds of smog control for different years or production series?
This is a very early car. It has a '79 engine etc. It's # 223 using the "EX" VIN. The PCV valve on this car has an extra port with the vacuum line coming from the carb base thru the temp switch. I'll take a look at an '80 PCV vave to see if it would work. If so, I would then only have the tank venting to simplify. Thanks, Karl
