Yes, there are a lot of references to the work "naked" and "nakedness" in the bible.
Had you read the article Naked Definitions? It touches on the three basic Hebrew words Arom, Eyrom and Ervah.
Arom means "naked". Simply nude. A physical thing that we are when we were created and born. Nothing more. That was the word that was used to describe Adam and Eve when they were "Arom" or naked and unashamed.
Eyrom also means "naked" but we can imagine that they were "nekid and up to no good" type of naked. That was the word Adam used when he said "I was afraid because I was "Eyrom" (naked) and so I hid." And God said, "Who told you that you were "Eyrom"?
Ervah means "nakedness" which was used to describe something negative too, such as "looking upon someones nakedness". It describes a vulnerability of someone. Nakedness of Noah when he was drunk, nakedness of the priests if they were seen up in a high place (stairs) praying in a prostrate position, and so on.
None of the "nakedness" episodes were negative because of the physical nudity. The nakedness was the result of the sin that was associated with it or the associations of other weaknesses.
The reason that the priests could not let their "nakedness" be seen due to being in a high place (top of stairs to a temple" was because it would remind the people of their previous worship life in Egypt. Sex was part of the Egyptian worship.
But it was not cammanded that the Isrealites refrain from being up on ladders, on rocks, or other high places where someone might see their nude bottoms (if they were nude under there) because that was a natural everyday issue, not related to the earlier worship practices.
Note that the other naked situations in the bible were either someone being nude, (no problems associated with it) or someone had nudity forced on them, such as in slavery.
You can read the three part article at the link above.
Thanks for the scriptures. You may now want to find out the meaning behind those scriptures and see where it takes you.
By the way, you will find in the New Testament (from Greek) you will find the work "naked" referes to being naked. There is no breakdown of different types. Like our English language, you will have to understand the context to get the true meaning. But on the other hand, the greek words for love is in three different words where in Hebrew, I think there is only one word.
There was likely no problem with folks looking up their skirts while working on rocks or ladders, because I'll bet in most cases they would be stripped naked for such work.
It seems that folks back them took off the robe gear that most of them wore, when doing dirty, sweaty work or work where the robes might get caught. Peter was naked working on his boat. Very likely, all his brothers were, too. The only reason Peter got dressed was to be dressed when he got to shore. The others likely stayed naked. They were close enough to shore to talk to Jesus.
The female lover in Songs of Solomon got her breasts tan when her brothers forced her to work in the vineyards. She was very likely topless and possibly naked. The native women of Vietnam still work in their villages topless. I've been there and seen them.
Clothing used to be expensive and needed to be protected because it was scarce and expensive to replace. Over the centuries, the devil has got us into thinking that we should cover our bodies. He's made clothing cheap to do that. It also helps the poor. They don't have to run around naked any more.
The native women of Vietnam still work in their villages topless. I've been there and seen them.
Well Ralph,
Spunky may be looking native soon. Its 80 in Florida and I am loving my time in my backyard as natural as I can be. Who knows, maybe by the time Feb 6 comes along for my next photo diet check I may turn light brown.
I was talking to my roomie about be nude and the people in the Bible. I brought up the Isiah was order to go nude for 3 yrs. She replied that it was because of/he sinned.
God did not tell Isaiah to go naked because he had sinned. God told Isaiah to go naked to show Egypt and Ethopiah what Assyria would do to them if they did not listen to Him.
Isaiah's nudity was not sinful, easily known because God Himself will never instruct us to sin. Isaiah's nudity was also not punishment- prophets were often nude, were actually known as prophets by being nude, and it would not have even been unusual for Isaiah to have been naked previousely, more than likely.
It most likely was unusual for someone to be naked for as long as Isaiah was though, unless they were slaves, or very poor. THAT was the point. Even a nudist will object to being forced to be naked, and that was what would happen to the Egyptians and Ethopians if they didn't straighten up.
God was using Isaiah as a example to those people: without reform they would be taken prisoner and be naked, i.e. slaves. It was a warning.
There is no indication in this passage or any other that I have read that being naked was sinful. People were naked when they worked, when they were slaves, or when they were poor. Public nudity was much more common then than it is now, and was much more accepted.
The only time that nudity is consided a problem in Scripture there is always an objectionable activity associated with it. The nudity isn't the problem, the activity or attitude is the problem. The nudity simply is an aspect of that problem.
I want to go on and on, but Myra just came in and told me it's past my bed time, so I have to go.
It's an interesting subject though, and I think we should continue. I'll try to check back sooner than 2 or 3 days from now, like I have been doing lately. Man, you miss alot when you do that!!
Kevin pretty much covered it all, ('scuze the pun) and may I reiterate that God did not punish Isaiah at all. God does not punish people by making go nude in public. Your friend has not read the scriptures.
I believe at times like this, you may want to have a bible handy, make sure YOU read it first, then go to the scriptures and do a study together on it.
But be careful, do NOT go to the scriptures to prove yourself right. That is never the reason to go to the scriptures. As I have said in my articles and will continue here, I do not proclaim that I know the all the truth. In fact, that is the VERY reason I started this forum, to let others come and help each other find the truth. And that is what you are doing when you asked about Isaiah.
Be ready to give an answer to the faith that is within you.
