My wife has been going on the Emmaus Walk for years now and she is going to have leadership of a table at the next ladies walk here. She has to give a Forth Day Talk because she is now having a leadership role and this was stressing her out. When I found the Fourth Day talk Nancy gave she was very encouraged and has now written hers out.

De Colores/Ultreya

July 13 2005, 10:07 AM

That is wonderful to hear about your wife and Walk to Emmaus. I still remember my weekend at Via de Cristo (the Lutheran equivalent) and it was 9 years ago! I haven't yet been on a team for a weekend; it just hasn't worked out. I did "kidnap" my pastor, my sister, and another couple three years ago and drove them to their Via de Cristo. I was my sister's sponsor.

Please tell your wife I will be praying for her weekend. When is the weekend, exactly? The two of you probably know this, but it is customary that there are people praying around the clock during a weekend. I have been on the prayer list several times. One Sunday morning I got up, having signed up for a two hour block, went to my church about sunrise and knelt at the altar for that time. It was a meaningful two hours for me to watch the sun begin to shine through the stainglass.

I'm glad she was able to gain inspiration from my fourth day talk. I had to do a lot of praying and soul-searching before deciding that was the direction I was going. Please tell your wife that it's o.k. if she continues changing it, even up to the point of the Ultreya. And when she gives it, to let the Holy Spirit guide her and God speak through her.

Boyd says in a reply that you are in Australia. A couple that live in Brisbane (he is a conductor and she is a clarinetist and writer) spent about six weeks at the same music festival at was at four years ago. They are a wonderful couple! One of my dream trips (and I have several) is to come to Australia. You live in one of my favorite countries.

Your wife knows what the words in the message title mean. For those of you who don't:

De Colores is translated "Of Colors" and refers to the fact that a symbol of the movements involved use a primary color rainbow as a symbol. Ultreya means "Encouragement" and refers to a gathering of those who have gone on a weekend and those interested in a weekend.

Blessings to you and your wife "Down Under!"

My wife is going away for trainning this weekend, coming back in time to hear me preach on Sunday. She has the walk in Sept. She has to give her 4th day talk on Saturday.

Wonder if Jesus found some clothes

July 16 2005, 7:29 AM

Wonder if Jesus found some clothes or created some for that walk to Emmaus. Maybe they thought he was a poor, naked begger who tagged along?

I believe he was naked working in the garden when Mary Magdalene saw him there. She just thought he was a gardener.

An Idea

July 16 2005, 12:12 PM

I went back this morning and read the account in Luke 24 about the walk to Emmaus.
Quite frankly, I think the answer is a definitive, who knows exactly.

In the New Revised Standard Version that I have before me, it says in vs. 15 and forward, "While they were talking and discussing, Jesu himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him."

Jesus had already been tranformed, if you will, as Savior extraordinaire; He was with the Father and living with the Father in heaven. So whether he was dressed or not is not part of the debate. I do find it interesting that He appears in this way. That's the way we are told He will appear on the last day -- when don't know when or where or exactly how. I don't think we can quite imagine how beautiful that day will be.

Back to the walk to Emmaus. A clue that he has definitely been transformed (and it happened when he appeared to Thomas and the others, too) happens after he sits at the table with Cleopas, et. al. He blesses the bread and breaks it and gives it to them. (Another reason to believe that there were more at the last supper than just the 12.) Because at this point we are told that "their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight."

After Jesus' resurrection, He "appears" to those walking to Emmaus, He appears to His disciples, until He takes them out to Bethany and ascends to heaven.

I apologize

July 16 2005, 12:36 PM

My typing and spelling have been atrocious the past few
days. I'm sorry the above post has several errors. I'll
try and do better.

By the way, Ralph, I think we the women saw Jesus in the
garden on Easter morning, that he was naked. We are
told, historically, that that is how people at that time worked
in the gardens or did a lot of work. I just think once he appeared
to them and they left, he had been transformed through
the resurrection, and we don't know an answer to your
question about the walk to Emmaus, or the events afterwards
as he kept "appearing" before them.

Not much more

July 18 2005, 12:26 AM

You wrote: "(Another reason to believe that there were more at the last supper than just the 12.)"

That would be correct. Often they speak of the twelve, the apostles, but more importantly, they speak of the "disciples" which can be many more than the main disciples who became the chosen twelve.

Women were there along with the apostles, but Jesus did have a special time with just his disciples, which may include a small handful of others that were present. But it is doubtful the other disciples (outside of the 12) were there with them.

As noted about a young man in the story that was watching from a distance and the gaurds tried to grab him, he ran home naked when his clothes were ripped off.

He was probably one of those disciples who decided to hang around from a near distance to see what they were up to, but not invited to the supper with the apostles and their closest family members and friends, such as Mary and Martha.
