After we had evolved into a few posts on cable and DSL speeds in a thread below, I was reminded by one of my PC magazines about speeding up connections when they seem to be "stuck" using "IPconfig /release" and "IPconfig /renew," from the command line. Boys had mentioned it a year or so ago and I had forgotten about it for a while.
I also reminded myself about a site that has good tips on broadband speed ups called Broadband dot net. Go to:
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and under the heading: "SpeedGuide Generic Registry Patches," there are some good patches that automatically change the registry so you don't have to go in and manually alter it. I still make a registry back up anbd restore point in XP before I do anything and periodically, but these patches have always seemed to be solid with no problems. Just find the proper patch for your XP or 98 machine.
Do they help??? Weeellllllll, they seem to, but then again, it may be a placebo for me. Sometimes, its kind of like washing and waxing your car. It seems to run better right away. Anyway, my connection appears to be cruising right along. I tested it before and after and the tweaks and I'm getting faster download times, so, who knows? Hope this helps someone on the board while they're surfing naked as we all should be. There, see how I tied all this in with naturism (LOL)?
