Read it before...

...in my philosophy classes Plato is required reading and is also required reading in the humanities course I'm teaching. The Greeks really had thought things out well.

...NOT THAT!!!!!

Nudity. I'm referring to Boyd's mention of both male and female Greek
athletes being nude, according to Plato.

Okay, that I'll agree with...

I thought you meant their society in general, so you had me worried for a second, there.

I agree that exercising and competing naked is probably a better way to do things. Just sometimes, depending on what you're doing, you need to watch out so you don't damage any of the dangly parts...

I wonder how many people know what "gymnasium" or "gymnast" really mean? (respectively- a place to exercise or train naked; one who exercises or trains naked)

Later
God Bless

What Olympic Events can we safely do nude?

February 23 2006, 10:51 PM

Well, let's stick to summer Olympics for nudity, although the figure skaters don't wear much and seem to do okay.

What Olympic Events can we safely do nude?

Running is fine. A man's privates tend to adjust by pulling in a bit when running. No problem there. Unless a woman is well endowed, nude running is not a problem. Bigger breasted gals might need a jog bra for running, but regular running tends to make men and women really lean.

Swimming was made for nudity. Not a problem!

Power lifting, discus, javelin, were probably done nude in ancient times, no problem.

Some of the rougher team sports. Hmmm. Maybe a jock strap for the guys might help.

Wrestling, etc.

I think the Greeks (and probably continued with the Romans) wrestled nude. Think that could get a little hazardous.

Winter sports or summer?

February 24 2006, 10:32 AM

Winter

Skating is reasonable but speed skating would cause some terrible pain if you fall I would think. Also, the speed suits they wear are areodynamic. Figure skating would involve too much risk of falling I would think.

Skiing? I think that would be a pain all over if you fall...

CURLING!!! -- Slow paced, low risk of injury but lots of skill. I'd think you'd want the shoes though.

Cross Country Skiing - When I was doing that a lot, I rarely fell. That would also lead to the Biathalon, cross country/shooting.

-----------------------------------

Summer

Track and Field probably ok... I would think you would be better off naked in the marathon than clothed as your body would vent better.

Any of the team sports? Too much chance of injury as a guy, maybe womens soccer.

Boxing? I'd vote out

Wrestling? Why not?
