Weather & ANZAC Day

It's interesting that Kevin talked about heavy rain. We have had a fairly dry summer here in NZ but over the last 2 days it has rained very steadily over most of New Zealand. We now have a number of places with Floods and slips to cope with.

Almost thought it was appropriate yesterday, ANZAC Day (25th) when we commemorate those who fought and gave their lives at war. For the unaware the term is an Acronim for Australia New Zealand Army Corp which was the men who went and fought at Gallipoli in the 1st World War. Both countries see this event as our coming of age as countries.

Sorry not Naturism related but I thought I would share it anyway.

As a history buff (pun intended), I find that I had not heard of ANZAC Day until you told us about it. Why was it only the 25th ANZAC Day, instead of the 90th, give or take a few years, since it commemorates soldiers of World War I?

Also, did New Zealand and Australia fight together during the Second World War, much like in the First World War as the ANZAC?

Thanks again for the information.

As Boyd said, I meant it is on April 25th. It was the 90th time it has been commemorated. Our forces did fight together in the Second World War but I don't think they were known as ANZAC's then, I'm not certain on this though.

25 April again;

April 28 2006, 7:58 AM

On the 25 April 1915 the Allied forces invaded the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey in an inconceved attack planned by the British. They were there for 9 months stuck on a small stip of coast in trenches often only 10 meters from enemy trenches. The ANZACs and Turks ended up with strong respect for each other and would even exchange food between battles by throwing cans of beef or fresh vegetables to each other in some of the most bisar times of the 1st world war. there is a documented photograph of australian soulders swimming naked in what is now called ANZAC Cove during the campain. The most memoriable aspect of the whole thing was that when the withdrawl took place it was carried out in secret and there were no casulties in the withdrawl. Very interesting history if you look up Gallipopy on the internet or ANZAC.
Australia lost 8000 men over the 9 months and New Zeeland lost about 3000.
The Brits lost over 20000, and the French lost 15000 but they are very rarely mentioned on when discuyssing this Campain.

That is a very important day for any young (or reistablished) country that is making their way in this big world. Congratulations and Happy ANZAC day! I know you are proud of your military.

And of course, thank God for guiding them to freedom!
