Amarillo....all alone

Well, I have moved into my new apartment in Amarillo. I like it very much, altho I haven't met any of my neighbors (at least one of them smokes...*cough cough*) and haven't quite gotten around to making friends, per se. I met a few guys from a church here that my mom contacted for some help when we moved all my stuff in, they were really nice. So far, most of the stuff in the apartment is working fine. The day we got here, they had shampooed the carpets, so the floors were damp when we moved my stuff in. :-/ The showerhead that I have sprays really wide and if you aren't careful, you mist the entire bathroom. I also found out last night that my bathroom ceiling leaks when my upstairs neighbor takes a shower. Oh, joy. lol But I am turning in a notice today, so hopefully they will get on it, pronto. It's kind of lonely being the only person here all the time. Which is why my tv is constantly on. I like to have background noise, so listening to the TV makes it seem almost like another person is here.

I had my first day of class today. I was very excited about it, but now not so much. The professor has an extremely dry sense of humor. Today we went over the syllabus and directional terminology. I didn't even take any notes. 1)This is the third A&P class that I've had...I think I've got directional terms down, and 2)he makes his lecture notes available online for us to print off. After I got out of lab today, I went to buy my lab book, since I didn't have time to do it earlier. !!!$50.61!!! for one freakin' lab book! I was speechless almost. When the cashier rang it up, I didn't have time to think about asking the question, "This book is $50???" it just kinda spurted out of my mouth. I was thinking maybe $30 for this lab book...that book store is getting by with highway robbery! Well, I hope that the class gets a little better, I was honestly thinking, "Are you serious????" but maybe it's just because I have a bio degree already. I hope that's it...:-/

Alright, well I need to go put some more of my stuff up and get the boxes out of here....it's too cluttered.

And I wonder why I didn't go to college? And to think, if you decided to sell that book back at the end of your classes, they may give you about $10 for it and then sell it again for "reduced" price of $40!

You wrote "Which is why my tv is constantly on. I like to have background noise, so listening to the TV makes it seem almost like another person is here."

Be careful. Background noise from TV, Radio and anything with uncontrolled commercials and negative information is actually being fed into your subconcious whether you know about it or not. You are allowing your mind to take in bad information with no controls.

Better to read a book out loud into a tape player and let it (you) talk in the background with the information you needed to learn anyway.

And if you do want to listen to something, at least get positive tapes, bible tapes, whether music or lessons or just good stories. But don't let that TV or radio pump you with their negative garbage! Even the local news is too negative and socially "controlling" to do this with.

TV sponsors depend on people getting up and walking away while the TV is on during commercials. That is why commercials are usually turned up a bit. Ever find commercials blasting you just when you were listening to a good story line? The favorite show fades into quietness, then BANG!!! A lound commercial comes on! You get up and walk out leaving the garbage to do its thing.

And of course, visit us more often and we'll pollute your...er...give you good company.

Boyd

Amarillo... but not alone.

Laura,

I know we aren't exactly the same thing as a warm body sitting next to you, but you aren't really alone.

I understand about the TV as background noise, but turn it off from time to time. Otherwise it'll drond out that still, small voice that we all need to listen to.

You'll do great, trust me.

God Bless
Kevin

Let's see....Amarillo.....isn't that an Indian word that means 'wind that never stops blowing'??? HaHa

Hi Laura, This is one of my rare posts. I used to have an aunt and uncle that lived in Amarillo. In the 80s and early 90s they pastored Fellowship Tabernacle, an independent church. They are both deceased, and I haven't been back there for over 10 years, maybe 15. My best wishes for a great school experience.

Let me second Boyd's comments about guarding your mind; and remember God said, "I will never leave you..."

Hmmm....

You have obviously never been to Lubbock if you think Amarillo's wind is bad.

Oh, and amarillo is actually "yellow" in Spanish, FYI.

Glad you made it.

Laura,

I looked back to see what you're doing in Amarillo. Looks as though you're pursuing an MS or a PhD, still in biology?

Is Amarillo on the old route 66? Seems as though I remember going through it WAAAY back in time. Then 66 goes on to Albuquerque; I think.

How's the church there? Stodgy conservative or liberal? Hate the conservative ones because you always have to be on your toes to not say something that might "offend" someone.

I actually have already graduated with my BA in Biology and am now pursuing a certificate in surgical technology. I believe that Amarillo is still on the old Route 66. I know that I40 and I27 intersect a few minutes from my apartment. I haven't had much of a chance to go to any of the churches here. The day I moved in some guys from one of the churches that my mom had gotten in touch with came to help us carry stuff in. I don't think we would've made it all in one day if we had to do it by ourselves. They were awesome. From what I can tell, it seems that that church is somewhat open to new ideas. Some of the young adults do prayer walks and they have a thriving children/youth program. I'll give you more of an update once I'm able to actually get to know a few more people.

West Texas and classical music

June 18 2006, 2:16 PM

I know Amarillo (it is on Rte 66), Lubbock, Hereford, and Slayton. Windy (Herford claims to be the Windmill Capital of somewhere), dry, cows on the north, oil on the south.

Haven't been there in five or six years, but have lots of family in Texas, but no ex-es!

Leave your tv off is good advice. But tune to NPR while you still can and listen to classical music. Convenience store owners pipe it into their parking lots to make the vagrants and ne'er do wells go away. May keep peeping Toms away as well. Let us know if it works.
