Stars Demand End To Darfur 'Crisis' Saturday September 16, 06:46 AM

Film and rock stars have joined religious leaders in signing an open leader to Tony Blair calling on him to take action in Darfur. The Prime Minister has attacked the Sudanese government for making what he calls the "completely unacceptable" situation in the region worse. George Clooney has already warned that millions could die if the UN doesn't send peacekeepers

The Archbishop of Canterbury has joined the likes of musicians Annie Lennox and Elton John, Body Shop founder Anita Roddick and shoe designer Patrick Cox in signing the open letter to the Prime Minister.

Actresses Emma Thompson and Helen Baxendale, television presenter Floella Benjamin, comedian Mark Thomas and Bob Geldof have also added their names.

Meanwhile, senior members of the Muslim, Jewish and Christian faiths are all set to gather outside Downing Street tomorrow to read prayers and call for an end to the suffering in the war-torn region.

The full text of the letter reads: "The growing human crisis in Darfur, in Sudan, cannot and must not be allowed to continue.

"Exactly one year ago today the international community agreed its responsibility to protect civilians from atrocities such as ethnic cleansing and war crimes.

"One year later the international community is failing to act as the Sudanese Government masses 10,000 troops ready to begin a new wave of attacks on civilians.

"With more than 300,000 people already dead and two million displaced, Darfur is teetering on the edge of catastrophe."

There is genocide in that sorry region. It has no known workable oil deposits so has no interest for anyone, except perhaps those well known ex-soldiers who are calling for action. Oh! Sorry, singers, not ex-soldiers!

WTF? Are we the only countries with armies?

Maybe they need direct action and the French will surrender and the Germans would blitzkrieg the place. LOL

Kofi Annan, what a worthless hunk of puppy poop this guy is, Like a doorgunner on a submarine.

I don't think that you can blame Anan. He has no direct power any more than his predecessors had.
