'Walter Mitty' SAS Soldier Exposed

Wednesday, July 09, 2008

A soldier who boasted on Facebook that he had served with the SAS and killed more than 100 people has resigned from the army after he was exposed as a fantasist by genuine soldiers.

Jim McAuley bragged that he had been a paratrooper at the battle of Goose Green during the Falklands war and claimed to have been the second SAS man on the balcony during the London Iranian Embassy siege 27 years ago. He also claimed that he had spent time in Afghanistan: "I did a spell with the boys in black but can't really say too much." He boasted that he had taken out two enemy machine gun emplacements in the first Gulf war and was involved in the rescue of captured Irish Rangers in Sierra Leone.

In fact, he used to serve in the Army Catering Corps and for many years organised local poppy collections in Chorley for the Royal British Legion. In recent years he had been training cadets at the Lancashire Army Cadet Force in Preston.

He was forced to apologise and quit his job after admitting his claims of being in the Paras and SAS were lies. He was caught out after serving soldiers sent him messages posing as a woman, Jenny Gilbert. They threatened to expose him and he backed down after they sent a message demanding an apology.

One of the soldiers told McAuley on an Army blog: "We ... take a very dim view of people like yourself who try to live off the glory of these actions, especially given that we have lost many good comrades who were involved in them.

"It is our experience that people such as yourself (we term them as Walter Mitties) once caught tend to lay low for a while then surface somewhere else. We will be watching, of that have no doubt."

McAuley, who is married with an adult son, apologised in a local newspaper.

Fuckin disgrace, check this out from the ARRSE site:

Background
The very latest in a seemingly endless parade of bluffing cnuts who are on a one way trip to ridicule. McAuley - an ACF instructor in Lancashire - was outed after his Facebook entry aroused suspicion amongst several Walt Finders on an airborne forum. The episode was subsequently presented to the world for all to enjoy by ARRSEr THESUNJOCK.

McAuley, typically got his facts wrong and lied himself in to all manner of corners. But not content with that, his Facebook gallery contained images that not only showed our unsuspecting hero in a set of 2s - all badged and gonged up... and proudly sporting a Maroon Beret - but also images that were not of himself. Ooops!

McAuley's medal hoard amounted to a paltry Silver Jubilee Medal and a Mong Gong, which was quite pathetic seeing he'd served in both the Parachute Regiment and 'Them', done tours in Northern Ireland, faught in both the Falklands and the Gulf War, worked in Sierra Leone and Afghanistan and, as if that wasn't enough, completed 6000 jumps and slotted over a hundred 'enemy'! Clearly something had to be done.

A classic sting operation ensued, with one of the Walt Finders masquerading as 'Jenny Gilbert', a naive female American student [Aren't they all?].

[edit] The Sting
What follows is an abridged, cringe-inducing extract from the dialogue that occured on the chatroom. It's clearly obvious, that McAuley - who was '2nd man on the balcony' [Aren't they all?] - was after one thing and one thing only. The 'worst stuff' has been omitted and spelling and grammatical errors have been retained. Enjoy:

[edit] The Outing
Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2008 08:34:01 +0000

Good morning, it seems that you do not wish to join the website & club that you were invited to join as of yesterday. That is of no little surprise though, you have never been a member of the British Airborne Forces have you?

You have placed a picture on Facebook of a member of The Parachute Regiment, leading the many females you converse with to believe that it is you, when in fact it is a picture of a very good friend of mine.

You have been in conversation with a lady on facebook & during those conversations you have told her of the following:

1 That you were a member of a TA Parachute Battalion for 15 years.

2 That you were a Private Soldier in 2 Para at Goose Green.

3 That you were in the first Gulf War & that you "took out" 2 enemy machine gun emplacements.

4 That you were a member of the SAS & was the second man onto the balcony during the Iranian Embassy Siege.

5 That you were involved in the rescue of captured Irish Rangers in Sierra Leone.

6 That you have done a couple of tours of N. Ireland.

7 That you have carried out undercover work.

8 That you have killed over 100 men during the above actions.

We who have been involved in a lot of those actions listed above take a very dim view of people like yourself who try to live of the glory of these actions, especially given that we have lost many good comrades who were involved in them. In one of your conversations you mention that your best mate Thomas Mechan (R.I.P.) was killed at Goose Green. Tam Meechan was once a Soldier in MY Platoon, you can guess how dim a view I am now taking of you.

Your conversations with the 'young lady' on Facebook telling her of all the above actions and how you watch female cadets are all saved on five members' PCs. Those conversations chronicle your desire to receive photos of her. That is just one lady; we see there are many ladies you have as "friends" in your Facebook contacts.

At first, when the photos (the ones I have attached) & transcript of your conversations on Facebook with the lady appeared on our site, you were deemed as a rather sad individual, then there was a lot of laughter; this then turned to anger as your ridiculous claims infolded.

In a couple of the photos you appear in No.2 Uniform wearing American parachute wings & two medals. Did you earn them or buy them on ebay or a market stall somewhere? Foreign wings are not worn on British No.2 dress, and it is also an offence to wear medals that you have not been awarded.

Once it became apparent that you also claim to be a Cadet Force instructor, our members & myself realised that if this was indeed true that we have a duty to inform the relevant authorities of that fine organisation of what kind of a man they have in their ranks, & the parents of those Cadets also have the right to know.

Your details are as follows: Mr Jim McAuley a CSM of the Lancashire ACF.

I think under the circumstances that you should do the following:

Remove yourself from Faceboook immediately.
Resign from the Cadet Force immediately.
Destroy the No 2 uniform you take such delight in wearing along with the medals & American wings.
Tell your two Lifeguard imposter friends to stop dressing up in their ridiculous uniforms [This is open to conjecture, as they may possibly be genuine.]
This email has been distributed to the following;

Regimental HQ The Parachute Regiment.
The SAS Association.
The Lifeguards Association.
All British Airborne websites.
The Lancashire Cadet Force.
The ARRSE website
I will expect to receive an email from you by 19:00 hrs Tue 8 April 2008 that you have complied with the above demands. If not a copy of the email will also be distributed to all National newspapers & your hometown of Chorley's newspaper.

It is our experience that people such as yourself (we term them as Walter Mittys), once caught out, tend to lay low for a while then surface somewhere els. We will be watching. Of that have no doubt.

One of the 'ladies' you were conversing with, detailing your fabricated war experiences to, was not a lady at all, but a member of our website. You - a Walter Mitty - were caught out by another one, how ironic is that?

[edit] Snivelling Apology
Clearly caught out, and to his credit somewhat, McAuley wrote a statement of apology. This is considerbly more than what others have done - and there are obvious connections to be made with the Barry Simkins episode - who also walted it up as one of the Machine.

A Statement from Jim McAuley. CSM, Lancashire ACF.

1) iam so sorry for offending the good men of 2 para and I acknowledge the sacrifice they made I have even been involved with organising the remembrance parade last year in my home town. I am truly sorry for offending you

2) i have never been in the gulf war i have never been in sierra leonne i have never been a member of the special force and i have never took part in any under cover operation i have never took part in any action once again i apologise to all concerned

3) I was a member of the Army Catering Corps attached to 15 para. I have never earned the right to wear Military Parachute Wings both UK and US and will remove them from my uniform. again I am so sorry for any offence. I am a Walter Mitty.

CSM J McAuley

[edit] Conclusion
Yet again, a walt gets outed. The sad thing is that McAuley had creditable service in the TA - albeit as a Slop Jockey. And yet again, had McAuley bothered to read Walting With Confidence, he could've avoided the inevitable... possibly. More pepper?

If he was at any time ex-regiment and registered with the regimental association he would have what was once referred to on here as an Oxford on Cambridge Blue, and is now a totally different, which is in fact an ID card.

We may have another one lads.

I've literally just got a call asking about a bloke called John Leyton Dyson - spouting he's been ex-22 AND ex-Shaky Boats...AND ex-Intelligence! Aged about 45 from what I hear. Heavily into shooting (shotguns and pistols, civilian ranges etc.)

This guy come across any of your radars?

Shooters seek handgun law change
By Andrew Fraser
BBC Sport

The government has been urged to relax gun laws which make it illegal for Britain's top pistol shooters to train in England, Scotland and Wales.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke has given special permission for pistol events to be staged at the London 2012 Olympics.

But British team members face having to do all their 2012 preparations abroad.

"It would be fantastic if they were given the ability to compete on a level playing field," said British shooting's performance chief John Leighton-Dyson.

"I would like to think reasonable people will be able to have reasonable discussions and come to reasonable conclusions about this."

We must be allowed to train on the same level as other athletes if we're to have a reasonable chance of competing effectively
British shooting's performance director John Leighton-Dyson

Laws banning most types of handguns were introduced after gun enthusiast Thomas Hamilton killed 16 schoolchildren and their teacher at Dunblane Primary School in March 1996.
As a result, British shooters who compete in the rapid fire, 50m pistol men and 25m pistol women Olympic events can only train in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.

Team members currently spend about 20 to 30 days a year training in Switzerland, and receive no funding because their events are illegal in the UK.

The Home Office agreed to relax the law so the three events can be staged in 2012, as it did for the 2002 Commonwealth Games events, although stringent security measures will still be required.

But the government's current stance is that there will be no further concessions for training in the build-up to the Games.

Japan, which has similar gun laws to Britain, gives its elite pistol shooters a special exemption.

And Leighton-Dyson is keen to set up talks with the government, the British Olympic Association and London's organising committee in an attempt to broker a similar compromise.

"It is very difficult for us to get young people to come into a sport they can't practise domestically," he told BBC Sport.

The banning of handguns wasn't a matter of eroding personal freedoms
Home Office spokesperson

"The British team in 2012 will be the biggest we can possibly put out because we are playing at home.

"We must be allowed to train and prepare on the same level as other athletes if we are to have a reasonable chance of competing effectively."

The International Olympic Committee has received letters from various parties since London won hosting rights for 2012 asking it to push for changes in Britain's gun laws.

But IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said: "We are totally comfortable with what has been put in place for Games time."

A Home Office spokesperson said the laws had been voted in by an "overwhelming majority" of MPs.

"The banning of handguns wasn't a matter of eroding personal freedoms, it was a matter of ensuring that what had been shown to be a terrible, if statistically small, risk was removed," she said.

Has this bloke made any claims of military service on the record that we can trace, or this word of mouth? Will see what we can't dig up on him anyway.

Hi Jack,

Not that I'm aware of, but that doesn't mean it's out of the question.

If he's smart/wiley enough, he'll know never to allow his alleged claims to be made to, or captured by, anyone in the media; or to anyone who may have served: that way he gets rumbled. The impression he gives off is trying to impress in front of teams of civvie shooting enthusiasts.

What I can tell you is that certain people in his immediate circle have become deeply suspicious of his alleged repeated claims to have been this super-dooper SF warrior.

If he never was in, claiming to be ex-22's bad enough - but then going on to claim a clean-sweep of been in 22, Shaky Boats AND 14 Int/Det makes him either one of the most adaptable and resilient men ever to take the Queen's shilling, or an out-and-out wannabe and Walter. 22 & Det, OK; Shaky Boats & Det, OK. But all three????

OK, initial SF Selection (prior to any post-Badged Continuation or Specialisation training/unit probation) is now open to all three arms of the Forces - that much is understood: but, with the exception of when 'The Originals' under Stirling had a some of their number styled 'The Special Boat SECTION' in WW2, I'm not aware of any guy having served in both 22 and SB - let alone done both and then had a stint in the Det too.

So you can see why this guy's causing alarm bells to ring.

Tommy,

I hear you, I was just after specific claims that we could nail him to. If he's a shooting wallah I'll hazard a guess that he hangs around Bisley, which as you know is deep in Army country. There are enough serving and retired around hose parts to make any self-respecting Walt (if that's not an oxymoron) to be a little circumspect with their tall tales.

There's a good tongue in cheek guide to "Walting With Confidence" on the ARRSE site:

Dunno if you guys get any of these types but we get a lot of support staff in the elite units who will try pass themselves off as fighters.

We caught one of our cooks wearing our unit's "warrior pin" (exact translation for lack of a better term) on his dress uniform. We 'talked', he hasn't done it since.

Yeah Shane we do. REMFs are ccasionally discovered passing themselves off usually as paras or SAS. When our Old Comrades Association becama a Parachute Regimental Association branch (where credentials must be proven by RHQ) a number of "craphats" ("legs" in US parlance - I don't know what term is used in your neck of the woods) posing as paras were discovered. Sad people.

July 11 2008, 4:28 PM

Jack,

My oppo is trying subtly to find out precisely the above. I've also asked him to see if he can prize out any "ah, which squadron were you in...?" type information from him. I'm just praying he says "'C' Sqn..." and then we've definitely got him!

Failing that, I've asked him to get into polite convo with the guy, with a journalist present (but without mentioning/announcing himself as such), and then we can get him on record. So when the subsequent newspaper headline reads "Former '2nd on the Embassy's Balcony' and Janghi Fort Operator, Mr xxxx....", we'll then have the outing process started with an audit trail.

More when I have it.

Shane,

As acorn said, we have these guys aplenty and again they are mostly rear-echelon support personnel. In a way they are the saddest cases, like the example that this was originally about. Yeah he was only a cook in the ACC, but wasn't his service, plus all his voluntary work with the cadets and poppy appeal enough to be proud of?

For a lot of young guys who are serving, posing as infantrymen (not even Paras/SAS) is a bit like having their cake and eating it too, buy being able to lead the cushy life in the rear with clean sheets and soft women, whilst basking in the glory of being mistaken for a frontline soldier. A lot of this is possible because of the insistence of many Infantry regiments, that attached personnel wear the same type of rank slides, colour of beret and Tactical Recognition Flashes (TRFs) as the Regt. Thus the only insignia to ditinguish them is their capbadge and stable belt. Thus a young lad cutting about with a generic green web belt, beret tucked in to his pocket revealing only its colour, and a rank slide on his combats that has "RIFLES" written on it beneath chevrons that are black outlined in dark green; looks like any other Rifleman. You'll be surprised how many signalers, clerks and cooks (mechanics tend to be OK actually) let assumptions go unchallenged. Most don't proactively 'Walt', but don't correct mistaken identity either.

Jack

There was a second Walt exposed recently in Lancashire.

At the recent Veterans Week in Blackpool. At the parade on the Friday there was a march past that included 58 Old & Bold from the Lancashire Fusiliers. The Senior Ranking member on parade noticed that one of the Royal British Legion Standard Bearers was wearing a Lancashire Fusilier Hackle in his Beret and an SAS blazer badge on his blazer breast pocket.

Some of the LF marching contingent recognised him as having been in the LF's in the early 60's and knew that he had not served with SAS. He was challenged about the badge but was very evasive and then beat a hasty retreat. The Lancashire Fusilier contingent have exposed him locally and informed his British Legion branch of the deception.

It'll probably come as no shock to find that this is not a new phenomena - not by a long chalk!

"Every man thinks meanly of himself for never having been to sea nor having been a soldier," wrote Dr Johnson.

It's just that now, with the growth of mass media/internet, examples are readily splashed over the news and a wider audience receives them.

Anyone remember this fucker..

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=16939878&method=full&siteid=94762&headline=captain-bogus--name_page.html

The worls is fully of Mittys, I don't get what the deal is,

Do you get more sex? More Friends? I realy am at a loss to work out why you would do this and dishonour the men that earnt the right to wear said cap badge. If they had done any research about the the reg/core your gonna pretend to of served with, you would read how passionate the men are about defending thier cap badge.

No better feeling than shooting one of these wankers down while hes trying to pick up a girl.

I was once at a abr with some mates in Jerualesm and behind me was an american kid with civilian clothes and an m16 (trying to act like they're ina secret unit and usually bullshit that they ahve no uniform, where in actual fact someone ina secret unit would a. not say he's in the army, b. not have a gun with him, maximum a pistol).

This is a fairly common sight in Jerusalem, they are called 'posaistim' (posers) and are either non-coms trying to look cool or combat guys still in their training and dont know better yet.

Anyways, this kid is babbling to this tourist girl about how he's in a secret unit and can't talk about what he does, I noticed he was carrying an old M16 which is only issued to non-coms and fighters in basic training. Then i saw his gun strap was prudly showing the insignia of a military police unit.

So not only was this fucker a bullshit, but also an MP.

I layed low until the girl nagged him into telling her the name of his unit, so Mr. Dumbfuck drops the name of one of the units in my outfit. I right away acted very excited and asked him if he knows so-and-so and remembers such-and-such, very fun, he stuttered a little, figured out who was talking to him and pissed off.

Nice one Shane! MP, in British parlance is "monkey". I had a mate who was walking down the street singing, "Here comes the Monkeys". Unfortunately some redcaps were walking behind him and arrested him!

A guy tried to tell me that he had passed pre-para but was binned because he was I rish. I pointed out that one of the coporals (a PTI) on my Recruit Coy. was of Irish parentage.
He then said it was because he was an Irish RC so I pointed out that not only was the PTI but two of my RSMs and asked the same questions as you. By this time several people were listening in with interest so he made his excuses and hurriedly left. Sad twat.

An ex-bootie used to come into my local pub wearin his windproof. I noticed the wings and asked him when he did the course and what was the course number. He was vague and could not remember his number (fair enough - I have long since forgot mine). I then asked what parachute he had used and he didn't know. What craft he first jumped from (in those days it was a balloon)- he claimed a Hercules at something like 2,000' (no way). I justed smiled and said, "Nice try Walter" and ended the conversation.

He was in a good mob, why he felt he needed to gild the lily, I don't know.

What are you going to do with yourself now?

Tommy's Edit: Acorn, I removed your email address as you'd left it in your post.

Shane,
I reckon most of us are curious about what is happening in SA. Having been away and now returning, perhaps you can give us your perceptions on a changing country?
Meanwhile, have a good time,
cheers, Davie

How can I find out whether this guy is genuine. I know his name and from whence he comes. He claims to have been in the SAS but wears DPM, boots etc. His behaviour is excused as being down to stress from his exploits in NI. This is public knowledge in a particular pub. Can anyone help? Perhaps on the other site if it is still going?

Spot, that is not the person I am asking about. It is a Glasgow guy and his actions (and excuse for them) are not those I would associate with any of the SAS guys I have known (boasting of service, wearing DPM + boots, very aggresive using his "service" as part of the credo etc).

Cheers, Acorn
