the red is not blood. it is a fluid sometimes secreted when the rat is under stress, much like human tears. my rat would sometimes have this after waking up, but never posed much of a problem. sometimes his eyes would stick shut, but usually after a short amount of time he would clean himself up and both eyes were fine. i always made sure his surroundings were ok, as changing surroundings or even changing temperatures can cause stress.
