cages

I read in a rat book that rats get respiratory diseases from their own urine. Thats why you must keep the cage clean, including wiping or hosing down the wires. This is why they recommend 2 storys. then they are not sleeping or playing in the bedding. They will basically stay on the highest floor. This keeps them away from their duties. Thats why a tank type cage is not good. It doesn't circulate air. Although it seems strange that most pet stores keep them this way? maybe because they don't stay there too long. ONce, I seen a hammock and thought it would be so cute. YOu can buy these at pet stores. Anyway, they didn't like it because when they got on it, it swung and made them nervous. So, they ate it. what a waste of money. Rats do eat material. Do you have any thrift stores in your neighborhood? LIke Goodwill or the Salvation army? Look in the phone book under thrift stores. Alot of times they have used ones, you can sometines get a nice one for cheap. Visit these stores and maybe you'll get lucky and find one right away. Or talk to someone there and see if they would give you a call when they get one. Or if your mom likes garage saleing, she could keep an eye out for one. I know these 2 story cages cost 50.00 in the store, but you may be able to get a used one for 10.00.
