Yikes!

by Poppy Seed Muffin

Oh No! This place is way different than my old home! My tummy is kinda big but I may just be chubby! Oh Sweet Pea,thanks for the warm welcome! Mommy says that a food dish is not a bed,it looked like a bed to me! I also learned that peeing in the bed is a no no. Trixi bit me for that! Well I have to go!

Love,
Poppy

Hello Love

by Rosabella

Don't be scared darling. This is your new home, and you will get used to it. One way your mummy can see if you're pregnant is to train you to a litter box. For the first couple days, on day like18 and 19 of my preganacy, i was using a litter box (it's real easy to figure out; wherever there is diff type of bedding is where you can poo) and then i stopped because i was so moody and i decided to poo all over the place!

Here's a link to a site with a pic of a thin ratty gone pregnant;
http://mutantspud.com/frc/info_pages/reproduction/pregnancy.html
just go down a bit and you'll see it.

Uh Oh

by Lila

Hi guys...
I'm a little scared right now because no one is home and there is no dial tone on the phones. Sometimes it makes this weird noise, like a long beeeeeeeeep. I didn't know what else to do, i'm alone, i can't call anyone, i don't know if anyone can call me, and although i think i'm being paranoid, if something does happen well here's a record of it. I just wanted someone to know what was going on. But i'm probably being paranoid. There might be a line down or something...and hopefully my dog would hear any strangers near the house.

I don't watch horror movies, but I went through a babysitting class and they were really adamant about doing something if the phone line was down. But my dorrs are locked, and its midday, so i shouldn't worry.
I'll read your poppy message. Such a cute name for a ratty.

Any advise and / or re-assurance

by

Hi all rat lovers. I have recently got two lovely little rat boys, Mogli and Baloo. I have never had rats before, but love all animals. They are both now 4 months and 3 1/2 weeks old. They are still very active, and do not sit still for a moment when they are out of their cage. Will I eva' get the opportunity to have them on my lap, relaxed and at ease, happy to be stroked? They have been with me since 9 weeks of age, and I do love them dearly. I suspect that they are doing well, and are well socialised now. I handle them every day, speak to them, praise and repremand them when necessary. I do not know what the benchmark is, as I have never owned rats before. Can anybody tell me how they are meant to be at this age, if well brought up?

Thanks,
Nat

Hi Nat!

by Lila

Its so nice to find another rat lover. It shows we are multiplying.
Rats are very intelligent and sweet creatures. And with all rats comes a personality. You may have already seen personalities develope. Like, I can tell you the general personalities of my rats. Cookies is outgoing and independent, Sweet Pea is shy and cautious, and Rosabella is best described as pure soul who just loves to love and be loved.
Some rats may just not want to sit in your lap. Cookies can't because she is an explorer. In fact all rats are explorers.
Young healthy rats are always hyper. As your love and comfort level with them increases, they will settle down and mature.
Some tips is maybe to feed them while they are in your lap. With Rosabella if i feed her, then she has to clean herself, and that gets her tired and if I then shield her from interesting smells and sights, she will probably fall asleep after some stroking.
If you are in a safe area with them like a couch or something (and they can't get off the couch) just let them explore the couch while you sit and watch TV or something. Eventually they will get bored and come back to you (you'll be the only living and therefore interesting thing on the couch). After all that exploring they may be tired and just want to sit with you. Dedicate a nice little handtowel for them to sleep on and just make your motions calm and steady. If you are relaxed and not worried aout what they do, they'll get the vibe.
Feel free to talk with us and ask any questions you have!
Lila

Thank you for your response, much appreciated! Well, I guess I am a little impatient. They have already progressed so much since I got them. I bought them from a 'good' Pet Shop. They had not been handled since their arrival at the pet shop, but when I watched them in their cage, they seemed healthy, playful and curious enough. They just needed to get used to humans. They have become quite independant I suppose. Since they gained confindence, and since I have become more confident in them, they have been 'free-range' rats really. Baloo is quite the adventurer. He runs upstairs, snoops around, but always comes back downstairs, to where we are and where his comfy cage is. Mogli seems more 'introverted', keeps to himslef quite a bit, but at the same time, he will not venture far from us. Sometimes I get the feeling that there is a bit of jealousy between the two, like they compete for our attention or something. They each prefer to have all of our attention. They seem to take it in turns. Mogli approaches us when Baloo is running around. When Baloo comes onto the seen, Mogli dissapears. Baloo tries to bully Moglie, but Mogli always pins him onto his back and puts him in his place. Baloo is a bit batty I think. He keeps on grabbing onto Mogli from behind,...you know. Will he outgrow this? Do you think he is playing and does not quite know what he is doing to poor old Mog's?

Lila, it has been a pleasure to talk with someone who shares a passion for rats. It is interesting and refreshing to hear from other rat owners. I feel like I am bragging about my little kids...

Take care,
Nat

Anytime

by Lila

Anytime Nat. I'm not the only one on here who shares a passion for rats. Everyone else just hasn't been on since you posted your first message. Expect a warm welcome!
Don't feel like your bragging. Its fun to hear what other rats do. We each love all rats, and by reading about other rats they become friends to our rats.
You know male rats, and female rats, need alphas. There has to be a leader; one to make the descisions. If your rats are close in strength, they may be having problems with who is the leader. Just let them play it out and let them fight a little and they will settle on one for a while. If Baloo is outgoing and Mogli is stronger then that mix might be confusing them. Baloo would probably be tougher, looking for any challengers to hurt his pride. So when he makes Mogli fight, Mogli wins even though he may not have the characteristics of a leader, which makes them confused. I dunno, its my little theory.
By the way, if your rats want to say something, they are free to post a message up!

THey ARE jelous of each other!! If you take one out of the cage, the other will probably start cleaning himself furiously.( a sign of being upset) Or you could be playing with one and the other will run and hide, feeling sorry for himself. Right now, I only have Casper, but my mind keeps wondering off to the pet store,JUST to look around.(not)

Thank you for your welcome. Since my chat with Lila last night (nightime in the UK now, 22:11), I returned to my two little boys feeling alot more confident and at peace with their behaviour. They are still young, and hyper rats are a sign of health. They really are sweeties. The come when I call them, which is an accomplishment on its own. Obviously they get rewarded with a treat. They are clever little fella's.

Hope to be in touch more often.

Hello Again

by Lila

These are your first rats right? I forget if you said that in the first message. Anyway, if you wanna spoil your boys, you can give them leftovers. Like earlier, I gave my rats cold boneless chicken scraps from last night's dinner. (we kept it to make fajitas). As long as it doesn't have sauce or a strange marinade on it, it should be OK for ratties. You can give them all sorts of other things like frozen peas, fresh carrots, and lettuce. In fact if it's a hot day you can put water in a bowl, cut some fresh vegetables, put them in the water and make you're little ones fish for food!

Hi, nat

by Jan

I'm Jan from arizona. (by the way everyone the monsoon season is in and it has been raining for a week now. Toay is quite stormy and it even cooled it off. I actually have my windows open tonight.)
anyway, I have a biege male named Casper. Quite the ladies man. ( he'll be unhappy to hear he has 2 new male competitors, since he is almost 2 years old) thats like 60 yrs in human years.
A healthy rat will usually not just sit in your lap and get petted. (If yours did this, you would have to worry he was sick.) They should be kind of antsy to get down. But,as they get older, they settle way down. Casper still wants to get down and explore.

Hi Jan & Casper

by

Jan,

Thanks for your comments. I also read your note on jealousy. Funny, you know exactly what they're like without even having seen then! Has Casper always been on his own, or has a mate of his recently passed away? Do you have any other rats?
It's good fun to be speaking with someone all the way in Arizona. I am originally from South Africa. My whole family are still over, but I am quite happy here for now.

What's Casper's personality like? Did you have him since a baby? Pet Shop or Breeder? Has his character changed much from baby to adult?

Speak again,

Nat

by Jan

Is that Natalie? or just Nat? Are we ;on here at the same time? Where are you from now?
No, we bought Casper with a female named Wednesday, we were supposed to seperate them befor they had an accident, but heck, How did I know they start mating at about a month old? So she had 13 babies and we kept one of the males (Scooter). and gave mom and the babies away. But Scooter only lived 3 months when suddenly his back legs got paralized then he was hemoraging untill he died. I don't know what that was all about. Who knows maybe all the babies died like that since ,the mother was so young. all 13 survived.
So Casper is alone now.
We bought them from a pet shop.
Casper is a big fat sweet-heart. This is the first time I had a male. (I've had aabout 6 other rats in the past) Usually 2 at a time. I also had 2 hairless rats. they are cuties too( in an e.t. sort of way,) but not as nice to touch. Casper Licks me all the time he's on me. Males like to mark they're territory tho'. so if your males are peeing, they won't stop.( Females don't do this.) also after they get to know you, they will not pee or poop on y0u.(unlike other small animals) I feed casper almost everything. I bought a book, that says you can give them tablescraps.Casper has almost always been layed back I think the males are way more laid back. If they didn't mark they're territory, I would probably always get males, but I think I'm going to stick with females from now on.

Poppy Seed Muffin

by Maddie

Alright, first of all I have to tell you how CUTE she is. On her back are tiny blue spots. Her head is blue all except a diamond on her forehead. And her little nose is blue and white. She is a baby. Not having all of her grown up fur yet. When Rosa was pregnant how big was she? I don't know if Poppy is prenant or not. 2day am am going to try xtra hard to post pics. When I put my hand in the cage at the pet store the first ont to come up to my hand was a rat that looked like Trixi. Well it was a boy so that was out of the question. My mom thought Poppy was the cuteist rattie ever. So it was then I knew I had a chance of getting a rat. Then little Poppy Seed Muffin came running from her huddled group in the corner to lick and sniff my hand,so I scooped her out. The first thing that she did was give me little kisses. Then she ran up on my shoulder. So I begged for I bit then finally Poppy kissed my mom and my mom said YES!!!!! So we brought her home. The first thing I did was put Muffin in the tub so I could clean out thier cage. when the cage was done I put them in the tub together. Trixi groomed the poor until she squeaked. Then it was like LOVE at second sight. I watched them play for a bit then I went to bed. When I got up this moring they were sleeping together. It is soooooo great! I think I have been typing long enough now! LOL

Hiya Poppy!

by Sweet Pea

Hi Poppy!
My name is Sweet Pea. I'm not really a baby anymore, but i'm pretty young.
That's nice Trixi welcomed you in. Trixi and I are good friends, so I know you must be a nice rat. It sounds like you're some kind of irish breed.
Gee I hope your not pregnant. You're younger than I am! And I don't think a pregnancy would be too healthy at your age. But i'm sure you would make beautiful babies.
With my mommy Rosabella, she was deep into pregnancy when Lila bought her so Lila couldn't watch to see if she got fatter. If you are pregnant, you'll get moody and fat and you'll eat a lot. And you'll nest CONSTANTLY. My mommy told me all about what happened when she was pregnant. Just tell Maddie not to put her fingers in your nest if you're pregnant. Thats what made my mommy bite Lila.
But Maddie probably knows all this.
Feel free to post something! Rats can speak their minds here!

She sounds LOVELY!

by

Maddie,

i read last night that you has got a new little one. it sounds liek you got a gem in your hands. she sounds adorable. I must be honest, i wandered into my local pet shop about a month ago, and fell in love with a little six week old female. she had the most beautiful pattern on her. she was a loving little thing and i was pretty much prepared to take her home then and there, with another little mate of coutrse that I warmed to. My boyfriend, (whom i live with) talked me out of it. I only see reason when there is a lot of distance between me and a little kitten. I neva' got to indulge in the pleasure of owning two little girls. We are renting a home, and it was hard enough convincing the land lady to let us have Mogli and Baloo.

Speak again. Enjoy Poppy.

Bugs?

by Lila

Oh gosh I'm so sorry. How terrible! It must have been so heartwrenching not being able to stop the bugs while they killed your rat. Hopefully we can fix this problem and you could get a new rat.
If you could describe the bugs (size, shape, color, characteristics) it would help. I can only think of lice, fleas, ticks, and (gulp) ants. Probably not ants because everyone knows what ants look like, but ants are the ones that really swarm.
I think it might be ticks. Ticks actually latch themselves on and suck the blood out. 200 ticks can drain the blood of a horse in two days. Did the bugs get bigger as time went on? Were the bugs moving on your rat or were they just sitting there drinking?

Lice and fleas will bite, but they don't really suck blood I don't think.
Did the bugs have wings? Where did you keep your rats? Did you clean their cage often? Maybe a bug laid a nest in your rats home, and when the baby bugs hatched they swarmed your rat as food.
This is so disgusting. I'm gonna look into this and ask around. Maybe I can find a Literaary Bug Reading Room. We'll get to the bottom of this.

YOur going to love your new rat. What color is he/she? His name?
Hopefully you have a wire cage with a couple of floors. and keep that cage clean.!! At least once a week. THis is very important. And keep them away from their duties as good as you can. Its best if they are not sleeping in thier bedding.
Get him a little house, to feel safe in. ( I use a square ceramic "kleenex" holder on it side.)
Make sure you clean the house, any toys, and the wire cage itself. Hose it down or wipe the bars with a wet rag. Rats will play with anything you put in their cage.
Have fun and welcome to the site. Any questions? ask as you need to.

Hello Ham'n'Pork! (New Rat Tips)

by Lila

Wow that is soo cool. I remeber when i got my first rat. I got her on april 1st.
Um...is your rat male or female? Also, if it is female, was she contained with male rats when you got her? Five days after I got Rosabella, she gave birth to ten baby rats. April Fools to me! If answers to my first and second questions are true, you may have bought more ratties than one. We can help you; we've been through rat pregnancies before!
What else can be said.....uh, you should mintor their food and water. Change their waterbottle every day, even if they didn't drink anything. If they took a few sips, the bacteria in their saliva can make them sick.
For food, you should get lab blocks. If you ask at a pet store, they'll now what you mean. You can also get your rat a treat mix, like Fiesta for rats and mice. Not too much though; you don't want your ratty getting fat! Even though they are terribly cute when they are chubby!
If you only have one rat, you will have to play with it often. Usually its at least 30 minutes a day, but thats like having to stay in your room with just a bed, food, water, and a jungle gym, and only being allowed out for 30 minutes every day. Which is why i try for two hours every day.
If your rat is healthy, it will rarely sneeze, have eyes and nose clear of and ooze, be waliking straight with an untilted head, and should be alert and eating and drinking.
Let us know if any problems come up. The Literary Rats are here for you!
Lila
PS Tell us a little more about yourself and your rat!

I am a blondie. Losing weight is a tricky thing, glad I don't have to worry about it. I couldn't take Trix and Ban with me camping. It was too hot. Plus my grandma thinks all rats are sewer rats. So I proved her wrong. When They came to our house I put Trixi on my shoulder and went to hug my grandma. She thought that Trixi was a hamster and told me oh what a cute little hamster. I told her it was not a hamster it was a rat. She was soooo amazed how soft and cute Trixi is. Ha Ha I felt pretty cool about that. Lila don't worry about high school. It's ok sam. I like red hair. For some reason people with red hair always have a lot of freckles. Do you have a lot of freckles?
Jan, I never knew about that cleaning thing. Rosabella is a jealous ninny. It explains why she always cleans her babies so hard after i put them back in. It's so hard that they squeak. I let it happen because i want rosabella to be the dominant ratty.
Shucks, I am so nervous about high school. I'll probably get trampled and killed the first day anyway.

Long Message

by Lila

You want a long message? OK I'll try.
The babies don't run in their wheels even though they have had them since they were babies. Yet Rosabella, who previous before i owned her had no wheel, loves her giant wheel and likes to run in it despite the annoying squealy sound that comes from it. (which is why I can't let her run at night).
High school sounds so scary. I'm going to Pioneer, the biggest high school in the state, school to 3000 people if you include the staff. I think I'll be alright on this website as far as security.
So anyway there are 3000 people, so the halls during passing time will carry me away like a river current. The classes are so overcrowded that some people don't even have chairs. A rat would do good though because every day fills a dumpster worth of food trash alone (not saying that rats really like trash; just that they could live on it and Pioneer has a lot of it). It's probably the same with paper and classroom trash. Maybe worse.
And I have one month of my prescious summer left to find my school supplies, get good clothes, lose this weight and toughen my skin, inside and out. I will be even busier with my 10th YAG play, A Tale of Two Cities, which is going on in the late fall.
Hmmmmm, I don't think it's long enough.
What do you guys wanna be when you get older? Jan, do you want to tell us about your careers after high school?
I want to go into some kind of science. A doctor, vet, scientist, science teacher, or a breeder (if i can live on it) are my preferences. The only other area I've considered is to be a writer or english teacher.
If I became a breeder, I'd breed rats, dogs, cats, or horses.
The thing with the most perks (to me) is to be a teacher. If i got into Eastern University, I'll be able to do this.
The worst subject, the one i'm TERRIBLE at is math. It makes me depressed because math could be my downfall.
(sigh) I'm looking forward to Latin though!
OK i should go to bed. It's 11:46 now. I get to shop tomarrow!

Yikes

by Maddie

Hmmm, your high school does look tough. I looked it up online. It has some really nice features. I was thinking the other day,I have no clue what you guys look like. I picture you as a blonde Lila. Not a dumb blonde though. I want to a teacher for special need kids when I grow up. Today we are going camping with my grandparents. They have a HUGE rv and have been dieing to take us somewhere in it. Oops I have to go pack. I have been neglecting the fact that if you plan on camping you must pack. TTYL

Blonde

by Lila

Yes Maddie, as a matter of fact i am blonde. I have long straight blonde hair. I picture you as a brunet, but that might be because the only other Madison I know is a brunet.
I hope you have fun camping! Put on lots of bug spray, lots of sunblock, and remember to keep your rattie and piggie cool!

blond too

by Jan

I am blonde too and desperatly want to loose 20 pounds. In the last year, I gained 25 pounds and have tried and tried. finally, I lost 5 pounds. Now its stuck again. to loose pounds the best way is, to not eat carbohydrates. which is all the stuff that is white. which leaves out all the things I love, Pasta, potatoes, rice, bread. don't eat anything white, except for popcorn with no butter on it. You can eat all the plain popcorn you want. Unfortunetly I only like it with tons of butter. Also, if you work out or swim for work-outs. Do this AFTER dinner. that way you burn off everything you just ate, and will still keep burning it off while you sleep. It was when I did this that I finally lost 5 pounds. My weight would not budge when I was working out or swimming or walking during the day. Try this, it may work for you, especially the carbs.
good Luck to all of us who want to lose weight.

well,well,well,

by Jan

Proven wrong once again. thats o.k.
Better think real hard about being a teacher. My son did thatt and he ended up hating it!! These days or maybe all the time really, the kids just don't want to be there. But, more then that, the kids who where the bad ones, was bad enough, but then he had to put up with the parents. You know if the kid is a screw up, the parents are probably worse. Also, he wanted to teach in a fun way, and they wouldn't let him. I'd think twice about that teacher thing. Of course, it would be different if it was a special kind of school, or a college, because they want to be there.

Re: Hmmmm

by Jan

Do you guys know that when a rat gets scared, one of his defenses is to poop? Thats why when they are young or you just buy them, they poop on you untill they get to know you and relax. That is why Trixie poops in that ball, she's scared.
Also, furious cleaning of themselves could be a sign of being upset. so if you play with one rat, and see the other ones furiously grooming, its because she is jealous that you are not playing with her.
It sounds like Michelle does not believe us about males hurting the babies. she better be careful.

Have you noticed?

by Lila

Hey guys, there's a new insulting attachment on some of the old messages. I think it's the same person. Pretty lame. Same old story. We should probably just ignore them. I responded to them, but i figure i shouldn't. They like to see themselves causing a stir.
Heck, do they like being insulted?
ADD people I bet. I know some ADD people who can get really bad.

Hee Hoo Haa

by Lila

I'm running out of names for messages!
Baloo is such a cute name!
Glad your feeling better Casper!
My trip was relaxing. The weather was a little rainy so we pretty much slept, ate, and watched movies. The movies were ideal times to yank the ratties out and try to train the babies to their running balls. Rosabella has a ball but since her equilibrium is totally off she gets dizzy and confused when she goes in the ball. It's OK though cause she doesn't like it anyway and while the babies are in their balls i can cuddle with her.
How can I train the babies to run in the balls? They are used to them now but they just sit and sleep or clean themselves. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works.
Any ideas?

Re: Hee Hoo Haa

by Jan

so far, I have never heard of a rat liking those balls. they seem scared or don't know what to do with them.
Also, if you ever want your rats to run on wheels, You have to get it in their cages while they are babies. Jessica put one in her cage as babies and they all love the thing, but when she brought it over here, mine wanted nothing to do with it and never have.
I;m not so sure the ball thing was made for them although I think hampsters like them. I wonder if mice like them? who has the mice? Rita?

Ahhhh.....

by Lila

So glad you guys didn't write too much!
Gee Michelle what an event. MAke sure you look out for babies getting lethargic. Since rats only have twelve nipples, runts of the litter could form and they might die. :O
Wow.....if you think about it, right now there are fourteen new editions to this little clan of ours.
Don't put Daddy near the babies. Dads can get hungry for baby flesh.
Hi Claire!

thanks for the advise

altho i really do think it depends on the rat
Louie has never hurt anyone, and has NO intent on hurting babies
he just sniffs them and then goes to lick Rosie off
their very cute

HI

by JAN

iF cLair ever had a rat, her mom would probably fall in love with it, don't you all agree? How does your moms feel about your rats?
I remember when I had the babies up on the top floor (allgirls)of the cage, and Casper was on the bottom.Well their little feeties would be hanging down through the wires and he would go up there and bite them. The cuties would just sit there and cry, they wouldn't move. Dummies. Guess they couldn't figure out what was going on.
Casper is o.k., just had a moment of fright there for a minute, I guess. Sorry.

HI!!

by Maddie

Sam,OMG how could you do that? You are like really brave! Do you have names yet? I was gonna name Trixi Muffin but I liked the name Trixi 4 her better. What bout Cream Puff (4 the white one)? Blue is such a pretty rat color. Trixi FINALLY mastered a trick! She now knows "give kisses". She will give you a few little licks. Pretty cute if you ask me.

Lila,Have a good trip!

Jan,Hee Hee,don't you just love it when your ratties scare you! Oops I have to go get ready for church!

ooops a daisy!!

by

well i went to our local bi monthly rat show with stricy instructions that i were to have NO MORE rats. well, i accidently on purposely got 2 more! i knew i was getting the first before the show as i had reserved a rescue rat from a breeder. the second i saw at the show and fell in love with. the first is a pink eyed white boy (v pretty) which i previously told you about and the second is an english blue buck. the blue buck was out of a litter of seventeen and the breeder has assured me he is six weeks old however he does look about 4 weeks. he a little scrawny at the mo but will soon put weight on! he comes with a five generation pedigree! which is a bonus but am not bothered about because i do not intend to breed him. the pink eyed white is v pretty as ive said and he is quite friendly as is the blue so will not take much taming. at the moment the pink eyed white is called chance and the blue is called baloo but this could change in the next day or two. as yet my mum doesnt know i have got 2 extra rats and will keep it that way for as long as i can as she will go mental! i wasnt allowed 1 never mind 2!

anyway hope u enjoyed my little story as i cant tell anyone else incase my mum finds out, the later she finds out the better!

sam
