Vaginal bleeding
by
My one year old rat is experiencing vaginal bleeding. Are there any antibiotics that can help clear up what ever is causing the bleeding (whether it is a urinary infection or tumors)?
after several years of not having any rat companions i finally brought home Spiderman(my daughter named him) a grey and white hooded rat.My question is ..how do I teach my small kids about playing with rats and do I need to buy another rat? I think rats are fine pets myself
Well, (most likely) in 4 weeks I will have 8 babies up for adoption in the toledo ohio area.
A few weeks back, my male rat got out of his cage. I came home from school and he pranced up to me, and I didn't think much of it. late last night, my other rat, the female, gave birth. How was I to know that the had even seen eachother? Choppy (female) has a makeshift lid of her cage, which appearently somehow got BACK into place after malakai broke in. But, i'm still glad to have babies, even if it isn't helping the overpopulation problem. Once they get fur, I expect an odd mix. Choppy, the mom, is a light brown satin berkshire, while the dad, Malakai, is a silvered black berkshire. I guess I was lucky that they are both good examples of rats. both loving, kind, and not to troublesome. I only wish I was prepared. She had 9 babies, all very large in comparison to their mother, who unfortunatly is a little to young to be a perfect mom, but I'm glad to see she is doing alright. once of the babies is very undersized, and I'm not sure if it'll live. I intend to keep one boy and one girl of the group, though if nobody takes them ,i still wont just give them up. That was Both Choppy adn malakai have a sam-sex roommate. I'll try to keep a close update on the rattlings, and keep a list of interested people who can take a pair, or who can take one home who already has a rat. I prefer they are not alone.
I have a little girl rat, man i love the little thing. The last rat i had I accedentaly put him in the oven!!!! man that sucked i fucking sucked man, i fed him to my other rat though out of respect.
help! i have two female rats, and they BOTH had babies in the same day. (today!! 11/14) i didn't even KNOW they were pregnant. of course i immediately seperated them. one of my two females seems to be doing well. she's taking care of them. the other though, i donno? she seems like she doesn't know what she's doing. do all rats know how to take care of their babies? she steps on them a lot, as if they didnt even exist. im worried for the safety of the baby rats! theres 11 of them..! sheesh.. how are they all going to be fed? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! please email if possible. thanks a lot.
1) Immediately seperate any boy and girl rats. They cannot play together, or even have their cages pushed up next to each other. Consider keeping rats of only one sex, or having males fixed. If you just got these girls, and they came home pregnant, you should call that shop and berate them for keeping their males and females together!
2) Start planning now to find good homes for every one of those babies. They are your responsibility. If you're considering a pet shop, think about how many of them will end up reptile food.
3) Make absolutely certain you seperate all the babies by sex by the time they're 5 weeks old or you'll have tons more babies
As for your questions, I'm not a breeder, but if you follow this link you can find many good articles on raising rats that may help you out-
Omg im so sorry to hear that.. i can relate to the whole parents not taking the rats to the vet thing.. my rat named Baby, she has a weird breathing thing going on for a while and my mom always says its nothing to worry about. I know its hard to lose something being a person, animal, special blanket or your favorite stuffed animal.. lol but time will pass and things will get better. its really sad to hear that ur rat passed away, but im sure you gave Sage a great life, filled with love and good times. Just remember that, hope this helps!
p.s. if ur worried about your other rattie being sad just talk to him/her about it , give it time and maybe get another rat for him/her. Actually another rat will get his/her mind off missing the old one.
I'm very sorry about the loss of Sage, Trisha. I know how hard it is to lose a loved rattie friend.
Can I suggest something? Maybe you shouldn't get any more rats until your parents agree to let you take them to the vet. It's awful to not be able to help your pets, and it's not fair for them either. I doubt your parents would feel that way about a dog or a cat....and you obviously love your rats very much.
Rats have so many health problems, they really need vet care. Perhaps if you wait a bit you'll be old enough to take them yourself regardless of what your parents say. It sounds like that would be better for you, and better for your rats.
Give your other rattie a hug from The Literary Rats, and lots of treats and scratches too!
My black rattie sage has been acting strange lately, when she plays with er rattie friends she will all of a sudden stop and start shaking/shivering then run and play again... I gave her extra food to see if maybe she was overly hungry or something but she barely eats and my parents wont let me take her to the vet because they think it is a waste of time for a rat to be taken to a vet.. someone please help me i dont wanna lose her
Hi, Does anyone have any experience with Tylan I oder ir from the rat and mouse website but came with very little info I have a 6 week old with mild resp.(a few sneezes) that in quarentine waiting to meet her new cage mate.. Can I dose her in her food how much and how often per day, how long and what dosage< they state on package 1/8 teaspoon in water and change it after 3 days I prefer to dose in food so I know she is getting it any ideas?Should I wait untill she if off the antibotic shes on and then start or just wait untill if it is needed again,I have heard a gentlman swears by it, that if you use it in rats under 9 months it works like a wonder drug surpressing the disease indefinetly?HUH Thanks, melinda
Tylan can be quite helpful with mild respiratory troubles. I'd recommend using it as directed, in the water. That's how I've always used it to good result.
You know she'll be getting her meds because she won't go long without drinking water. In order to make sure she does drink a good amount each day, I always feed dry food only during treatment so the rat gets thirsty. Also, a touch of fruit juice mixed in helps hide any nasty flavor and makes it very appealing
Hey, sorry i havent written in such a long time! Anyway i got sort of a problem, baby my white rat with a brown/gray head always always always trys to go up my sleeve, its crazy, and if i roll my sleeve up or am wearing a t-shirt she'll go crazy looking 4 a sleeve and even bite me a little, Im not sure why she does this, but we've come to the conclusion that she's just having fun? Ha well thats about it , she's just constantly up the sleeve... YUP thanks bye bye ~danielle
I rescued a baby rat maybe 6 weeks old possibly pregnant maybe not we have had her almost two weeks now Now the question what kind of antibiotic should a baby be on she,is sneezing, I know not to use Baytril (stunts growth) is doxcycline OK She is my wee Ami and to be the cage mate of a blind rat that just lost her cage mate to a nasal cyst very sad now so I would like to treat the new rat, finish up her quarintine...,Thanks, melinda
I forgot to ask how much to give her I will be buying a scale tomorrow mine isn't working for some reason.. So per ounce of her wieght=___/ounce of RX I have been waiting for a call back from Vet. but he has been working with my knowledge alot so waiting I am Thanks, melinda
Thanks for your advice. I showed your letter to my mom, and looked up stuff on Myco, and we were going to take Perry to the vet today. When we woke up, he had died. I guess it was our fault, we sould have taken him sooner. It's so terrible....
Anyway, thanks, I guess.
I am very sorry that your rattie passed. but myco is incurable anyhow. medication can just extend his life by 6 months or so, and if he did have Myco, he was probebly in pain, and it is probebly better now that the pain is gone.
but don't say it's your fault... It happens, and sometimes there is just nothing you can do.
I have had a rat for six weeks, and decided to purchase another rat. I bought the new rat 2 days ago and she was very quiet at the store, however, she has now been making some noise. It doesn't sound to be wheezing as she doesn't do it all the time and she doesn't do as she is normally breathing, but she does occasionally sneeze and seems to make the sound when she is sniffing. In the past two days she has become quite active and is eating really well. I'm wondering if I should be worried if it is a respiratory illness or if just happens to be a sound that she makes. The other rat only grinds her teeth.
There is always a HIGh risk of myco in petstore rats, and you should be worried. Just keep him away from your other rat completly until teh new one is COMPLETLY done sneezing and weezing, which may never happen. keep them apart for atleast 2 weeks after the new one stops sneezing.
I need help. I think my rat, Pericles, is sick, but I can't be sure. He's been this way for a few months now- usually lethargic, sleeping and laying around in his cage even when the door is opened for him, really heavy breathing so it looks like he's shaking. Sometimes he lays with his head over the edge of the top floor, so it's dangling down. He seems to be eating fine on most days, and drinking. We clean his cage every week usually, and take him out and play with him and pet him. It has been really hot lately, so maybe it's that, but I just don't
know. My mother is reluctant to pay the 50 bucks if he's not very sick, so I found this site. Please, somebody, help me, or tell me if you think it sounds serious enough to go to the vet.
like most rat site will say, Mycoplasmosis is VERY common. Lethargy, heavy breathing. It may be the heat, in which case I reccomend giving his a bowl of icewater. But if it's Myco, and a few months in, he sould probebly be sneezing. If he starts up with that (rats rarely sneeze) then you should take him to a vet for some medication. I can understand parents not thinking it's worth taking a rat to the vet. I had to make an appointment and save my money for my rat. If your mom sees your detirmened to get him to a vet, she will probebly kick in.
How big is his cage? Some rate are lethargic simply because there is nothing to do. Though he is probebly sick, there is always a chance that he simply doesn't care. And drooping their heads over the side is normal... my rat malakai does it all the time.
Idea: You might try an animal rescue group there are some that provide money for medcal assitance ect.. You can look in the phone book, call the local poud for a number and look in a search engine by putting in any of the above words animal rescue in your state medical assistance etc.. good luck it does sound like he needs to go to a Vet. and get on medication very soon it would be a shame to lose him...
hello, i found six little baby rats in a couch we were getting rid of. i tried to put them back where their parents would find them but they didn't want them. i don't want to kill them, but i don't know how to feed them. can anyone tell me what to do?
That is very strange... Unfortunatly, there is very little you can do for them. it is near impossable to raise baby rats under 3 weeks, f they ar over that, or if their eyes are open, then try feeding them apple sauce with some rat blocks you can guy at the pet store. If their eyes are closed, pretty much your only chance is to find another nursing female to raise them. Perhaps check around the pet stores. if they wont TAKE them and keep them with a mother, then BUY a nursing female. Though if you are not a rat person and don't want them, it can be hard. But if you want them to live, it's pretty much the only thing you can do. If you absolutly CANT keep the rats after they are weaned, most pet stores will take them .Though I would advise you to look for homes, not to give them to a pet store.
Though I am assuming these are domestic rats. If they were on your COUCH, the probebly arn't. In which case, i'd still get a surrogent mother. but after that I don't know what you would do. Wild rats probebly wont be able to survive on there own if raised in a home, and do not make good pets. if this is the case, contact some wildlife rehabilitation services right away.
Please help my. My one year old black and white rat tizzie is sick. She breathes loudly and it sounds like she is chattering loudly. Her fur goes up a lot and she is very skinny and doesnt eat or drink much. Her sister Bizzie, who lives with her, is just fine though. Does anyone know what is wrong with my rat?
Lizzie
Seperate them NOW! At least by a few rooms. Maybe take the healthy one to a friends house! There is a chance your rat has Mycoplasmosis... I highly infectious and DEADLY infection of the upper respitory system. You will need to keep her VERY hyderated and clean her cage more then usual. take her to the vet for medication, because if it is a respitory infection it will kill her in no time without medication.
It is VERY common in rats. it can be caused my messy cages, or a huge number of things. One of the most likely causes of death in rats. I'd imagine at least 50% of rats have it. They will sneeze and wheeze. If either one of your rats is sneezing, then that is probebly an emergancy. If the vet does give you medication for your rat, then make sure you get it for the healthy one. They can have Myco for the longest time without symptoms.
So take at least the sick one, or BOTH, to a vet as soon as possile! I'd hate to hear that one of them died. Or both of them. Put a humidifyer in your room or something to help them breathe. Whatever you do don't let either of them see ANY other rats, even EACHOTHER, untill ALL symptoms have been completly gone for atleast 3 weeks! I'm sure all the otehr rattie excperts would reccomend that. You can get a vet referral at www.ratsauce.com and some info on Myco there.
Hello! I've decided that my house has been rat-proofed enough to have a small colony of RATS! But I'm not in a hurry. If anybody knows of any rats that need RESCUING (maybe a science lab who gives rats away) Within 50 Miles of my home, or ANYONE willing to DRIVE to my home to bring homeless rats, I'm here, my general location is at the bottom. Because I want to give a home to rats who NEED a HOME. I cannot buy pet store rats, though they need to be saved, because EVERY pet store rat I've gotten has had MYCO. So if you know anybody who wants to get rid of their rats, or anybody who KNOWS anybody, email me! Or if you just have some suggestions, post here. All my rats will be given a GREAT home. Run of an entire room at least 6 hours a day (all day on weekends) and get leash time outside on warm enough days (between 65 and 80) They will get interaction with other rats, and for any willing too cooperate, they will get time with my other rat-friendly animals! (Supervised of coarse!) They will be fed a diet of 75% fortified lab blocks, with the rest food scraps (but nothing to unhealthy) They will spend a few hours with me at least, and if the rat can be litter trained and trained not to chew, will be aloud to be out while I sleep. (They will be in my room of coarse) They will get socialization with adults in children of all ages (if they enjoy it, only) and some select rats with good attitudes will come with me when I visit some placed (taken to the kindergarten classes at the elementary for a learning experience so that the world can think better of them!) and just on regular trips to the pet store with me if they enjoy it. (Always leashed with a harness when we go on these kinds of trips) I NEVER to long-distance traveling except for Orchestra, where they will all be caged (3 rats pet cage) with an hour or 2 of run-about with my family members watching over. But i NEVER EVER leave for more then 2 days at a time, and only every couple of MONTHS, so they should be fine. I own the house, so I won’t be evicted for owning however many rats i can take care of, so you will never have to worry about that. But after a good screening, people within a driving distance will be aloud to adopt rats from me, if we get overpopulated. There will be a monthly check on their health. Though I cannot get them all Spayed and neutered (though I'd like to) I'd prefer rats get fixed before coming. It’s cheap and good for their health. Males and females whom are not fixed will ALWAYS be separated. Fixed rats will be aloud to play with the other sex granted they enjoy it.
So if your rats need a good home in the TOLEDO, OH USA Area, contact me!
*ANYONE, feel free to post only COPIED TEXT in any message board without my consent, as i can only find so many!)If there are any questions, feel free to contact me.KD M
Hi, my I bought my rat today at petco in the medium section. The first thing she did to me at the store was pee on me, and then imediately poo on me. But I was okay with that. Well, at home, she doesn't seem to like being touched. Whenever she hears a noise, she just stands there scared to death, not that she moves anyhow. She always seems to just stay in her little house, and whenever she is picked up, she poos or pees on me again. I also got a three-story cage, so she can climb and she also has another female rat as a friend. That friend rat is larger, and always active, and doesn't seem to have much trouble as my rat. The rats were bought on the same day, and the smaller rat will not eat or drink water, or climb its cage. My brother's rat (larger one) will though. I don't really know waht to do for my rat, do you know how I can get to know my rat better? Also, I don't think that my rat is marking her teritory on me, because she uses the bathroom everytime she's scared. I tried putting her in the ball taht wheels around, but she pooped in that too...so I just gave up. I really want her to start eating and stuff, and i don't think i can trust train her without her keep pooing and peeing on me, but if I get poo and pee on me, but my rat starts to trust me...I won't mind at all.. Its just that, i dont' know how i'm going to get close to her..becuase she wont' eat any treats like bananas, or corn, or lab blocks...and extra info, petco just got that rat today. I really love rats, and I dont' want my first rat to be a failure..so please help! Thanks!
I wrote a 2 page message and tehn deleted it... so I have to make this short. Sorry. Just pet her. Don't take her out until she lets you pet her. Try feeding her in a different cage so she has to come out to eat. babies just pee when they are excited (happy or scared) so don't worry about it. Let her eat in a dark quite room, and spend lots o time petting her. never force her to come out. i can help you out more if you need it... Just drop me an email. i've owned rats for a good year or 2 and have done my research. Good luck!
I wouldn't worry about her too much. She is probably just very nervous from all of the noises in the petstore, and being in a house is a big change.
When you offer her treats, try something fun, like a piece of dried fruit, or even fresh. Mine always loved bananas and apples. Sunflower seeds (in the shell) are a special treat, as is a little hard boiled egg. Now that the holidays are approaching, watch the stores for specials on nuts (walnuts, pecans, acorns, etc.) and buy a bit extra. You can keep them in the freezer, and only take out one or two at a time. It is a toy and a treat all in one. Watch the amounts on these, though, as they are very high in protein, and this can be a bad thing. Several dried cereals are fine. You could also try a cooked chicken leg bone. While it is not a good idea to give these to other pets (dogs, cats, etc.) rats grind them up fine with their teeth, and will not come to harm with them. All of my rats have always loved them, even the rescues. I have read on several websites that corn is not a good idea, as it generally contains preservatives and chemicals that rats can be sensitive to. Some say it is fine.
Yogurt drops are great, but sometimes pricey.
Make sure she knows where the food and water are. Also, watch to make sure that she is not feeling threatened by the larger rat. Sometimes, when a rat is particularly shy, they would rather just hide than face a new friend, even if it means eating a little less. You might try two food dishes, placing one right by where she likes to hide. Same with the water.
I would continue to pick her up and pet her. Talk to her in a gentle warm voice, while holding her close against your body, so she feels secure and protected. Offer her special treats just for "putting up with" you holding her. It is very easy for a scared rat to go from being shy and nervous to terrfied when they have no physical contact. I would continue to pick her up and hold her at least once a day.
Give her a few pieces of paper towel to shred and build a nest with. If she feels that she is the one making a home, she will settle in faster. Cardboard tubes are great for chewing, also. Depending upon how much cage space you have, cut a door in a shoe box and place it upside down on the floor(make sure there are no staples or silica gel packets in it first).
Everytime you go past the cage within hearing range, say her name. It will get her used to your voice. Even if you are not going to be picking her up, stand next to the cage for a moment, so she can become accustomed to your smell.
Eventually the marking will stop, I would think. Some rats, however, continue to do it. One of my males did right off whenever I took him out of his cage. It is a way for them to mark something as being "theirs". So I guess, in a way, we should feel honored that they claim us, right? "Oh, goody, here's my human and I'm going to poop on her!!"
I ran a rescue for a time, as well as had a large number of my own rats. Unfortunately, my son has developed allergies to everything with hair. We also lost our two old men, Cuddles and Snuggles. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If I cannot help you, I'll try to find you a link that does.
You are more likely to get a hold of me through email, though, as I only stop here periodically.
My two rats are great and everything. But one bites/nips at me and my sister all the time.I'm scared to put my hand in his cage. Also does anyone know how a 11 and 12 year old(me and my sis)can stop he from biting us and a easyer way to train are rats? Please help me!
Cassie
Hi, i have two rats of my own too, Maybe the one is biting you because u have the smell of food on your hand, or do you have any other pets like a dog or cats or birds or whatever? Because the rat could be feeling like it is in danger and thats its defence. You could always remember to wash your hands with soap without a strong perfume to it. If this doesnt help then let your rat gain your trust. Wear a thin glove and put ur hand in there or without a glove might be better and let your rat know you arent goin to hurt it sooner or later he/she should learn to like you better. Give him/her treats and he/she will know that your good because you feed it! hope this helps!
THe rat that is biting you, it could be because of the reason you have another pet or you smell like food. If that's not the case, its because the rat loves you. Some rats nibble on you to say thank you, like a dog licking its owner. I find that a little annoying, so if you want it to stop, just speak likes a rat, because rats speak when they dont' like soemthing. If it bites you and makes you bleed, it is more likely that you need to gain its trust.
Some rats are very protective of their cages, and will bite anything that comes into their "home" uninvited. Sometimes, rats bite when they are unaware your hand is there, and you try to pick them up.
Before you enter the cage, speak to your rat in a warm friendly voice, so it knows you are there. When you put your hand into the cage, try offering a special treat, like a sunflower seed (in the shell) or a small piece of fruit. After the rat has had a few treats (while hearing your voice as you speak to it warmly) try to gently scoop it up when it approaches again. If all goes well, offer it another treat while you hold it. If all doesn't go well, and it tries to bite and run, either:
A) If you are a patient person, try the whole treat thing all over again. Eventually, it may work. Or, if you are like me...
B) Pick the rat up with a glove, an oven mitt, a washcloth. Remember, do not pick the rat up by it's tail as it can cause nerve damage at the worst, and besides, you will not build trust by letting them dangle in the great wide open by their butts. Once out of the cage, cradle the rat and speak warmly, offering treats...
I had a rat who was extremely cage protective. She would alway bite, no matter what. I tried the treat thing for months. She would take the treat, put it down, THEN bite me, then eat her treat. Each time I offered. She was a pain in the cage, even when I was trying to clean it. She would attack my hands every chance she got. Out of the cage, she was the sweetest rattie I have ever seen. She gave rattie kisses and tickled ear lobes with her whiskers....
I also have two rats. One is nice as can be and the other one bites me all the time. I am afraid of her now. I think she is being protective of her cage like Natalie had mentioned. Is there anyway to get around this? Please let me know.
I am a rat owner. I am a rat friend. I think that rats are very special creatures. I think they are a gift from God. My rat Sliver is a joy to me. She makes me happy when I feel sad, no matter what kind of a day I'm having, my dear friend Sliver has a way of making me feel good about myself. I hope that there are many other rat owners out there who feel that being a rat owner is a joy of life.
I feel that being a rat owner is really cool and will bring me joy. I first got into rats in 9th grade, in my biology class. Our teacher was teaching zoology, and there were rats in her class, getting trained to climb up and down buildings. I found the rats really cute, and really fun, and suprisingly smart. I couldn't believe that they came to you when you called their names. I bought my rat today at petco in the medium section. Please reply, thanks.
