I am a student nurse with Multiple Sclerosis. I hate to sound like a baby...but what would you do if you were being tormented by students. The people in my class purposely open their textbooks/Taber's dictionary to pages about MS, and other related topics. I don't mind when people are curious about MS, but they maliciously talk about certain issues that some people with MS experience (incontinence, paralysis, etc...) It is highly embarrassing and I feel like garbage. What should I do?

Have you talked to your instructors?
A reasonable person could easily assume that the instructors have an obligation to create and further a learning environment that is free of hostilities, veiled threats and assorted malicious behavior such as this.
I have to wonder who these fellow students think they are?
I hope you have read other posts on this board. I love the attitude of "Cara" regarding the three options to handle any situation and her talk with instructors about, in essence, exerting her energy to diffuse a hostile situation is not a requirement for the program but quality clinicals [and classroom time] are. Embrace her philosophy and talk to your instructors.
Good luck.

You may want to take a friend with you any time you talk to your instructors. It may serve well for documentation purposes.

I have a very difficult time believing that adults actually act this way. Junior high, I believe is the stage of this group. I would definately speak to the instructors about this. They have a responsibility for ensuring the well-being and piece of mind of all their students. If talking to the instructor does not help, you must go to a higher authority within the institution. Behaviors such as this should not be tolerated. Use terms like harrasment, and intimidation. Essentially, this is what your class mates are doing. Also, offer to teach this group of ignorants, about MS and other demylinating illness.

Hi,
It was so great to finally find a forum of people with a disablity go after a RN degree. I also have MS and just have started Nursing school this past month. Yes, like with any chronic illness or anything that tries to get you down you must perserver(sp?) and just keep your head high and go after your dream of becomming an RN. I find it really amazing in that all the screenings and pre-req you need to get into an RN program here in New England are quite a task. I can honestly say that through the application and interview process I feel as if my class mates and myself all belong together in pursuing a RN degree.... People are aware of my MS and have never treated me any differently. I guess I am lucky or fortunate enough to be around mature people in calss. Though, believe me I know what you are talking about and how brash, rude and insensitive some people can be. What ever you do, never let anyone or anything hold you down. I heard somewhere once before (I cant remember where I heard it, but I embraced these words and have been doing my BEST!:

" I have MS. MS doesnt have me!"

Stay postive and hope all is going well....
WOuld love to hear how your first semester went....
Email me at yodabuds@yahoo.com would love to talk with you... btw The name is John here and I say GREETINGS TO ALL!!!!

John
