Hi all,
I am a new grad who has started an orientation on a brain injury/trauma unit (its intermediate medical care). I am five weeks into my orientation, but I am having a lot of trouble. I have problems keeping up with 3 patients-remembering what I have to do, focusing, organization, speed. Pretty much the new graduate stuff, but my ADD doesn't help and then I also take Topamax for migraine prevention and I feel that does slow me down. The topamax is really important and I've been on it for awhile, but it seems lately the side effects are more noticeable.
Anyway, my employer does not have a structured orientation program for new grads and I think that is what I need. I am still learning new skills-suctioning vent patients, feeding tubes, etc. As well as charting, how to document, and learning a new hospital's protocols. Its a lot to learn. I used accomodations in school but I would prefer not to at work unless necessary.
My question:
Suggestions I can take to my manager about what I need in orientation to be successful? I think I need to mix class time and floor time. I am also going to try to take a position on a med-surg floor just to get myself started. Anybody who has had a similar experience or a good new grad orientation please let me know. I would love to have some concrete examples I can talk to my manager about.
Thanks!! |
