Lupus -- Students or Nurses?

Hi, I'm a nursing student in Pa. with lupus, along with overlapping arthritis and fibromyalgia. I am interested in hearing from students and/or nurses in similar circumstances. How to deal with the unpredictable symptoms and course of lupus? Managing fatigue and meds? Trying to keep "balance" and stay healthy when you're overwhelmed by the stress and demands of nursing school? Am I crazy to think I can do this? Help, advice, support -- please! Thanks!

I have been a registered nurse for 26 years and I have lupus (SLE). Yes, the road is more difficult because of fatigue, joint/muscle pain issues, anemia, etc... But I will tell you one thing for sure, you will be a kinder, more compassionate nurse because of your experiences with managing a chronic illness.

One great thing about the nursing profession is that there are options for those of us with fatigue issues. Through experience I have learned that 11-7 shifts and I don't get along too well, nor am I able to handle the Director of Nursing position I held for years. But I can function well as a wife, Mom, and nurse when I work part time during the day. I think that the challenge is getting through school, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You may find (as I have) that I have a healthier lifestyle than many of my peers because I have to! In the long run, I am much better off. (and I look a lot younger because I cannot go out in the sun! There's a silver lining for you).

I did leave management because of health issues, but I am now going for my graduate degree so that I can become a nurse educator. I am trying to set myself up for being able to remain in the nursing profession as I age. Sometimes I think I am crazy for being in grad school but I set my goals and need to push forward. Nursing school is not forever and the summers definitely help recharge the batteries.

I am happy to share my experience with you so ask any questions you may have. Hang in there...your life experiences will mean a lot in your chosen profession.
