Clinically blind in one eye....

Hey all!

I'm new to this site, & am happy I found it. I'm 28 years old, married, & a mom of two young girls. I became an LPN in 2007, but am currently not working. I'm staying home with my kids, and wanting to go back to college this fall to work on my RN degree.

I joined the site because I am clinically blind in my left eye. I was born with a congenital cataract & lens abnormality in that eye called "Posterior lenticonus." It's rare... only like 1 in 100,000 babies are born with it... lucky me! Looking at me you can't tell anything is wrong, except sometimes the eye looks slightly lazy if I'm tired. I have some vision in the eye, but very little... mainly peripheral. It was found on an eye exam when I was three. The opthamologist told my mom (who was a single parent then) surgery to the eye could be risky, and may not improve my vision much. My mom chose not to have the eye operated on to prevent losing what vision I had left in the eye. So anyway, I'm clinically blind in the left eye, and wear glasses for my good eye. I see about 20/20 with glasses in the good eye. I have developed some vitreous floaters in the good eye in the past few years, and they are quite annoying, but other than them I see pretty good in the good eye.

I joined the group to meet other nurses like me who are clinically or totally blind in one eye. I've never considered my problem a disability, as it has never slowed me down. I have to admit when I enrolled in nursing school though I hid the fact that I am clinically blind in one eye. I was scared I would be discriminated against. :( However, I passed all of my tests, and skills exams, and no one ever knew the difference. I could do everything the other girls could do, if not better than some! I feel like maybe I should've been honest when applying to the program, but felt like I may not have gotten in, when I knew I could do everything safely that everyone else could do.

So anyway, if there are any other monocular nurses out there who like to be penpals, please feel free to write me! Thanks & God bless nurses... :)

Welcome to our group!

Take a look at the American Foundation for the Blind Career Connect.
They have information about nurses with vision loss.

Also, contact some of the mentors on the mentor page of the web site.

Let us know how we can help,

Donna
