My Akita chose a quiet back room as her "crate". If we are home she stays in the room with us, but when we leave she retires to her room. This way she can still keep an eye on the house (come out and look around). Hopefully you won't have to keep a giant crate for your grown Akita. They are very intelligent and as such, need to learn their home boundaries (not sleeping on the bed or OK on the bed) and social skills (running at the door and howling, OK or not OK). Banishment (as the grown Akita might view her crate) might not be the best way to govern her behavior, she might just resent being sent "away". On the other hand, owners of smaller and hyper dogs have great results using the crate until the dogs got old enough to learn where they can go and how to behave.
