Typically (not always, but typically) Akitas don't care for other dogs. Some of them get along with some other dogs (like Sunshine & Ali), but rarely with dogs of their own sex. In my experience, females are the worst offenders in this regard. If Sunshine is growling at the pup now, it may be related both to the pup's exhuberance AND to the fact that the pup is female. If you leave your female Akita unsupervised with the pup you are asking for trouble. Also, if the pup goes near your Akita's food, maybe water, and probably toys, expect your Akita to act with "extreme prejudice." If the Akita decides to attack the pup with serious intent to harm or kill, expect it to happen with lightning speed. Since the Akita doesn't live with you full-time, it may be a situation that you can live with. But, since the pup is female, it is a distinct possibility that the Akita will never learn to tolerate her. If the pup is a real quick study & a naturally submissive dog, she may take the hint and get the heck away from the Akita when the Akita growls at her (growling, believe it or not, can be a good thing in that it says "stop what you're doing BEFORE I have to hurt you; if the other dog takes the hint, it can keep things from escalating). My female Akita has never been around pups, but absolutely hates other animals -- particularly female dogs. My male Akita is wonderful and patient with puppies (within reason) as long as they don't bother his possessions.
