New akita puppy and getting along well

by Scott

We have a female Akita that is almost 3ys old. When she was a six-month-old puppy she had puppy (male Akita) live with her for about six months. They would fight over food and toys. She is now a dog very dominate dog and aggressive toward any dog the will not submit to her.

We had wanted a second dog for a while but we thought it might not work. We still entertained the idea and looked into many other breeds. We came a crossed a 10 week old male Akita pup that we fell for. We brought our female to meet him and we where very surprised by her. She at first didn’t want to be any where near him or acknowledge him, later she actually laid down and played with him there where no signs of aggression. We decided this might just work. The first day was fine. Then she grabbed him, he was yelping and very upset. For the next week or so they were separated and she was very closely monitored when she was near him.

Things seemed to be fine, until a chew toy was introduced. She went at him again. Since then I only give them chews when they are both in the same room and both get put away as soon as one gets board with the chew. She now seems fine with him having a chew toy in the same room with her.

We the next attack was our fault, we left the door open to the utility room where the female is fed. The pup now about 3.5 months old went in there, I don’t know if he ate from her bowl or was just near it, but she grabbed him. This time she gave him a small cut. We have since been very careful about him having access to her food.

Other than that they get along very well. He is now 4 months old, they run around the yard play in the house. He is always put in his kennel when we leave, but we feel comfortable with them unsupervised in the house or out in the yard for a reasonable amount of time. She is almost too tolerant. He constantly grabs the back of her leg and jumps on her. She wrestles with him and she is very nice with her 100 lbs of mass. She loves to be chased. They drink out of the same water bowl. All and all I think there great together and I have high hopes for them.

Any advice, or things to watch out for?
