...I doubt you have a longhair. Probably just a variety/line that has an especially luxurious coat. Thats Good, imo!
True longhaired(moku) Akitas are the result of a recessive gene and when it is expressed, there is no doubt at all. It is also an AKC fault(a DQ nonetheless), tho many people desire a Moku over normal Akitas. I have heard it said that the Mokus are bettered natured as a group, fwiw.
If you want to know for sure, take him to the next dogshow and ask (after they show their dogs) some Akita breeders.
