There is a lot of truth to the puppy stage thing. My male did not become protective until about 4 years old. Also Akitas are smart dogs, they know when someone is friendly or aggressive. If you really want to find out, have your wife walk him at night and have a friend dress in dark clothing and come out from behind a corner acting aggressive towards your wife. Finally, just the looks of an Akita will keep 99.9% of would-be intruders far away. Good luck.
