Hi,
I have a long-haired akita who I love to bits and I was quite suprised when I found out that due to the long hair being a "defect" breeders are effectively trying to breed them out.
This to me seems like such a shame as there are no other health issues related to the long haired dogs, it is just the fact that someone along the line has declared that the "breed standard" doesn't include long haired dogs.
Since I have had my Akita I have encountered nothing but suprise from people when I tell them that the reason I can't breed from my dog is because she has long hair.
While I personally wouldn't breed from my dog (best left to people who know what they are doing) do other people not agree that it is a shame to breed out such a lovely trait?
I'm not trying to start an argument or anything I'm just curious as to what other Akita owners think as I've never come across any to ask before.
Jo
